you didnât mean to cause chaos. really, you didnât.
it just sort of happenedâlike the way koganegawaâs serves happen (loudly, disastrously, and with someone screaming in the background).
practice had been dragging on for hours. futakuchi was being, well, futakuchiâloud, smug, endlessly talking about how âdate techâs defense is so solid because iâm solid.â youâd rolled your eyes so hard you almost saw your brain.
but then he dove for a ball that shouldâve been impossible to saveâface-first, might you addâand somehow popped it perfectly into aoneâs hands. and you, for a moment, forgot that he was the most annoying person in the known universe.
âyouâre not so bad,â you said absently, handing him a towel as he grinned up at you from the floor.
and thatâoh, that was your mistake.
because the moment those words left your mouth, futakuchi froze like youâd just proposed. his grin went from normal-idiot to i just heard angels singing in 4k surround sound.
and then he stood upâdramatically, of course, because futakuchi doesnât do anything halfwayâand turned to the rest of the team like a man delivering world-shaking news.
âeveryone shut up!â he announced, voice echoing through the gym. ây/n thinks iâm amazing.â he dramatically flips his imaginary long hair. âsorry losers, iâm taken.â

the entire gym went silent.
koganegawaâs serve went flying sideways, smacking sakunami in the head.
aone blinked. very slowly.
you, meanwhile, stood there, towel still in hand, brain buffering like an old computer. âiâwhat?â
âyou heard me,â futakuchi said, tossing his hair back like some 2013 heartthrob. âyou think iâm not so bad. thatâs basically a love confession.â
âitâs notââ
âtoo late,â he interrupted, already strutting over to where aone stood like a proud husband. âshe said it. my girlfriend thinks iâm great.â
aone tilted his head. âyouâre⌠dating?â
âemotionally, yes,â futakuchi replied, dead serious. âspiritually? weâve been married for centuries.â
you almost threw the towel at him. âi said one thingâone thingââ
âand it changed my life.â
you groaned, pressing your hands to your face. somewhere behind you, koganegawa was whispering to sakunami, âshould we, like⌠congratulate him?â
sighing, you walked over and smacked futakuchi lightly on the arm. âstop telling people weâre dating.â
âso you admit there are people to tell,â he said with a grin so blinding it could power a small city.
âkenji,â you warned.
he perked up at his name, immediately softening. âyou called me kenji.â
âthatâs literally your name!â
âstill,â he said dreamily, hand over his chest. âsounds different when you say it.â
you stared at him. âyouâre unbearable.â
âand yet,â he said, stepping closer, âyouâre still here.â
you were still there. stupidly. unreasonably. maybe because futakuchiâs grin, when it wasnât plastered on like a showmanâs mask, was actually kind of sweet. and maybe because, even under all the bravado, you could see how his ears flushed pink whenever you looked at him for more than a second.
you crossed your arms. âyouâre lucky i tolerate you.â
âyou adore me,â he said immediately. âdonât even lie.â
you scoffed. âkeep dreaming.â
âi will,â he replied, and something about the way he said itâsoft, sincere, almost shyâmade your stomach flutter in a way you were not prepared to deal with.

later, while the boys were scrimmaging, you caught him glancing your way between plays. every time he blocked a spike, his head would swivel toward youâjust to check if youâd seen it.
when you finally gave him a small thumbs-up from the bench, he practically glowed. like actually glowed. sakunami muttered that he was âso disgustingly in love itâs throwing off the teamâs energy.â
and he was. absolutely. irredeemably.
after practice, he lingered as the others packed up. aone patted his shoulder and said quietly, âyouâre⌠happy.â
futakuchi nodded solemnly. âthe happiest man alive.â
you, oblivious, were busy stacking cones. you didnât notice the way he hovered near you like a very tall, very smug shadow.
ây/n,â he said softly.
âhm?â
âi kept thinking about what you said earlier.â
you glanced up. âwhich part?â
âthe part where you said iâm not so bad.â
âoh my god, youâre still on that?â
âitâs the only thing keeping me alive right now,â he said, grinning. âyou basically gave me emotional CPR.â
you laughed despite yourself, shaking your head. âyouâre starting to sound insane.â
he gasped dramatically. âyou wound me.â
you rolled your eyes, but when you looked up, he was still watching you with that same stupidly earnest expressionâthe one that made your heart do that inconvenient fluttering thing again.
âokay,â you said, setting the cones down. âfine. youâre⌠not so bad.â
he lit up like christmas morning. âsay it again.â
âno.â
âplease?â
âno!â
âyou love me.â
âi donât.â
âyou totally do.â
âfutakuchiââ
âsay it one more time,â he pleaded, voice suddenly softer, almost boyish. âplease?â
you groaned, face heating. âyouâre not so bad.â
he looked absolutely feral with joy. âi knew it. i knew it. iâm calling my mom.â
âdonât you dareââ
too late. he was already dialing.
âmom,â he said when she answered, âgood news. y/n thinks iâm amazing. you can start planning the wedding now.â
you nearly combusted. âgiveâgive me that phone!â
he dodged your grab, laughing breathlessly. âyouâre stammering! oh my god, youâre actually stammeringââ
âbecause youâre embarrassing!â
âyou love it.â
and maybe you did. because the sound of his laughter was warm and bright and the way he looked at youâlike youâd just given him the whole world with one careless sentenceâwas enough to make something in your chest go soft.
so you sighed, pretending to be annoyed, even as you smiled. âfine. if i say youâre amazing, will you stop being dramatic for five minutes?â
he froze, eyes wide. âsay that again.â
you did. softly.
âyouâre amazing, kenji.â
for a second, he just stared. mouth slightly open, like he couldnât quite process it. thenâ
âi have to sit down,â he mumbled, heart racing so hard you could see it in his chest. âiâm actually dizzy. is this what true love feels like?â
you snorted, tugging on his sleeve. âcome on, drama king. help me carry the water bottles.â
he followed immediately, grinning like a fool, still half in shock. and when you brushed past him, shoulder to shoulder, he quietly whispered, âiâm never letting you go, you know.â
you rolled your eyes but didnât move away. âi know.â
and futakuchi smiled like heâd just won the championship.

that night, he posted on twitter:
but futakuchi didnât care.
because for the first time ever, you said something nice.
and in his mind, that meant forever.
