do you know any good guides to get into furry muck?? ive wanted to try it for ages but find it confusing
so long as you have some familiarity with command line/terminal and the basic CLI procedures, i found the starting guide on the official site quite adequate. otherwise, first familiarize yourself with the command line interface of your computer. it takes a little getting used to, but this is how the entire MUCK will be, plus knowing how to use a CLI is a good skill to have.
you will need telnet installed on your computer. telnet is the protocol that will allow you to access furrymuck through your CLI (telnet is not secure, so don't type anything into furryMUCK you wouldn't want anyone to be able to see! this is the risk of using a legacy system, assume it has already been compromised and act accordingly). on windows telnet is preinstalled but you will need to enable it as described in this guide. on linux and macOS you can install it with a package manager. i use homebrew on mac.
once you have telnet, the official guides for connecting are here. character registration is done via email. mine took around a week and a half to come back. because your passwords are sent in plaintext over email and unsecured over telnet do not reuse another password. here in the registration guide.
once you access the MUCK, the area just outside the bandstand where you start has guides for new players and the people around there are generally willing to help new and clueless players (like me). it takes a little trial and error and exploring. i found this guide for interacting with the enviornment helpful.
furryMUCK is a very magical place when you're able to meet it at its own terms. part of the fantasy is the clunkiness of the ancient internet its idiosyncrasies. have so much fun!
FurryMUCK was first started in early August of 1990 and went public in mid-October. The database itself was kept on a machine at North Carolina State University; hobbes.catt.ncsu.edu. A resident there, Neal (Bluemage), maintained the actual machine - A MicroVAX. Drew lived in Pittsburgh at the time with his housemates and administered the server, handling the startup operations. It was soon realized, though, that help was needed, setting up the original wizards: Drew, Ashtoreth, Erych, Abigail, Ryuuko, Shaterri, Centaur, and Bluemage. At a later date, Lynx was also brought in to code the bank and the think program and Tugrik helped do some of the building, although neither was a wizard until later. Ashtoreth began building the initial setup from this point. Furry Avenue originally lead into town, with room two being at the base of it. This was changed when the park was created and room two was moved under the bandstand in one of the corners with streets radiating out from there. Each street was named for famous furries. Cougar Boulevard for Ken Cougar, Sable Street for Sy Sable, and Fox Terrace, which was originally Celon Terrace, for Celon DeLosi. Ashtoreth also built the Krystal's, the Jungle, and the old halfway house, which is where the Dancing Unicorn is now. She was somewhat considerate of the possibility that Furry could become popular, so she tried to make the building generic enough to appeal to a lot of people. Themed mucks had never really attracted much of a following at the time. Stepdisks, which were carried over from Islandia, were set in place to encourage foot travel. The east-west stepdisks and north-south stepdisks were independent of each other at first. Ashtoreth changed that, making it to where if you wanted to change from one to the other, you'd have to go through the park. Transporters, scanners, and floating rooms were discouraged in the beginning, and even banned on Furry for over a year. The design, layout, and initial policies were designed for socializing and seeing new places, encouraging exploring. Revar first came to furry as a guest in October of 1990, where the server was running a modified version of TinyMUCK 2.2, modified by the site wizard of the time, BlueMage. Furry wasn't officially opened yet. Shortly after her first visit she gave them the code for cmd-pose, which she'd written on CR (CrossRoadsMUCK), where TinyMUCK 2.2fb1 was actually conceived and written. She found it somewhat frustrating that FurryMUCK didn't have some of the cool MUF programs she'd written on CrossRoads, so she ported some of them. Page and Whisper, and the message boards were a simplified version of the more full featured (and more difficult to use) bbs on CR. All based on the MUF libraries, which were also ported. Revar, at one point, actually owned and controlled some 60% of the globals on FurryMUCK.

Exploring parts of FurryMuck you haven’t visited since the 1990s.
My FurryMUCK character, Xydexx, is 23 years old today.
VERY alarmed.
I'm just posting this to quickly get something out of my system. Every few minutes or so, I always suddenly realize that I shouldn't be terrified of this whole situation, but I ***AM*** terrified. And I keep asking myself... why is this haunting me so badly? Why can't I suddenly get it off my mind? What is it about this thing that's so unhealthy that what I've seen and experienced on it is making me lose sleep at night? I made a huge mistake. I never should have tried this.
