Please please tell me I’m not the only one who thinks that Blackgaard was planning on committing suicide for the entirety of dbd. There is no way he blew himself up as a last ditch effort to not get caught.
When he talks to Glossman after giving his withdrawal speech, Glossman says “Goodbye, sir,” and Blackgaard replies quietly with “Yes…” THAT RIGHT THERE is the moment that confirms that he’s gonna end it.
PLUS Jack Allen saying “He said he didn’t want to die [from Ruku], so he set off the detonator” combined with the fact that Bovril “tried to tell [blackgaard] about the antidote” BUT SOMEHOW COULDN’T? Dude look who you’re talking about if he wanted the antidote he would have been scrambling for it. If you tried to tell him but couldn’t, that means he made up his mind and didn’t wanna listen.
Can I also point out that in one of the books (I don’t remember which one lol), he recalled finding Professor M in South America and noting that he was weak, old, frail, and wheelchair bound, and how he wouldn’t go down that same path.
I’m just giving my own headcanons here but I personally think he equated getting old/illness to failure and that’s why he killed himself. He didn’t want to be perceived as anything less than “perfect” and so he decided to die by his own hand before that could happen. Also he’s a major control/power freak so it wouldn’t be surprising that he’d want to be able to control his own death.
Also he did it so any punishment he would have received would just go straight to Nicky. Bro is serving his “father’s” prison sentence.
