Pokemon Card of the Day #1914: M Lucario-EX (Furious Fists)
Lucario-EX was already a good Pokemon. The Mega only had one attack instead of three, but the advantage here was that it hit absurdly hard considering its Energy cost and lack of downside. The other side of M Lucario-EX was that it didn’t have a Spirit Link and therefore gave up a turn of attacking where the base form could keep up some pressure. This created a rather interesting dynamic, with opportunities to fit in contrasting with the competition of the Pokemon it needed to work with.
220 HP was a typical number for a Mega, and only strong Psychic-types picking on that Weakness had a realistic chance to KO when considering viable Pokemon. It also required 2 Energy to retreat if you wanted to save Lucario for a different occasion, though many times it would just end up using Rising Fist repeatedly until it fell.
That Rising Fist move was absurd. 140 damage was far above the norm for something that needed 3 Fighting Energy. Strong Energy and Muscle Band could work to push that to a point where it could take out all but Wailord-EX and many Mega Evolutions, and if it didn’t KO you got to discard an Energy attached to the opponent’s Active Pokemon. It may have been nearly broken if it wasn’t stuck on a Mega that lacked a good shortcut to reach this point.
M Lucario-EX was one of the hardest Pokemon to figure out. Once it got going it was usually taking multiple Prizes. Rising Fist was easily one of the best attacks the game had seen to that point. It was also cursed to lose a turn of attacking just to reach that point while being in a type that had a bunch of potent attackers that didn’t have that restriction. None of these were quite as powerful, and that power let M Lucario-EX be a rather good attacker, although sticking with the standard Lucario-EX was much more common.
