Chapter 1
Fugo held his viola close, feelings were tense as he gracefully played the tune they have been practicing for the past week. The harmonization of the class was almost satisfying to Fugo's ears if it wasn't for his state of concentration. The teacher's counting was almost drowned out by the overflowing noise of music. Fugo goes into autopilot as he guided his bow down the strings of his viola. The amount of school work he had waiting for him in his bag like was a looming force over his head. His eyes carefully traced the composition's music sheet. Music was usually calming and encapsulating, but in that moment Fugo only felt annoyance. The strings faze out, ending the song off.
The teacher nodded in satisfaction. That was the last song of the practice, "Let's keep our lucky streak up. Good job today." with few notes of criticism from the teacher, it ended swiftly. Fugo begun the usual motions of securing his viola into his case, first bow, then instrument.
Giorno, who sat next him, had his viola secured already, "See you," He flashed his typically friendly smirk towards Fugo.
"See you," Fugo replied yet not as charismatically. Fugo did not say bye to his other classmates, when he walked out the practice room, he felt a small sense of relief.
His walk from the school to home was a small moment of time just for himself. Away from school and away from parents. When he wasn't consumed by his own thoughts, he enjoyed people watching. Sometimes, walking slower than normal to appreciate the walk. Naples always had activity. Tourists and citizens bustling through the streets, consumed by their own schedules and tasks. Fugo too, most of the time, was consumed by his own tasks. He had a lot of tasks waiting for him but on that day, he found himself walking a bit slower than usual. He wanted a mid point between home and school to be by himself. He didn't go down his usual route and instead went towards a market area. He would rather procrastinate. Down that path, there were a bit more people but not to an overwhelming degree. Fugo strolled down the street, passing shop after shop, not paying much attention to them. The chattering of people rumbled lowly throughout the street.
Fugo made it to the end of the street after only a short period of walking. For no reason in particular, he noticed that he happened to stop in front of a coffee shop. Como La Flor, the name stuck out among the rest. Fugo thought maybe he could procrastinate . He didn't want to particularly go home yet.
He walked into the shop and was instantly hit with that fresh coffee smell. It was decently sized and had some customers in there already sitting at the small tables that decorated the shop. Fugo walked up to the counter to order and was met with a teenage boy. He was tanned and had wild black hair. He had a bored expression upon his face but snapped out it at the sight of Fugo.
"Hello, what can I get you?" They dully looked at each other.
Fugo ordered a typical espresso. He didn't wait long for his coffee and settled down to a corner table after receiving it. He felt out of place doing nothing. Fugo began to start doing school work after he sent a text to his parents, letting them know he'll be out.
As soon as he started working, he became intensely concentrated. Finishing up assignments, studying for exams left him consumed and blocked off from the world around him. The background chatter of people actually helped him concentrate more than if he were in a library. Fugo was finishing up his last practice exam when he felt a light tap on his shoulder . He flinched ever so slightly, clearly startled to be pulled out from his focus. Fugo looked up and was surprised to see the boy from the counter now right in front of him. He seemed as unbothered as he was before.
"Hey man, we're closing the shop." Fugo's eyes swept towards the large window and realized how dark it was outside. Definitively pass 9. The cafe was basically empty with two older women heading out as well. Slightly embarrassed, Fugo started to pack his things.
"Ah, my bad." His assignment papers were scattered on the table along with notes and an open textbook. The boy stood somewhat awkwardly at the edge of the table. Fugo swiftly gathered his papers and tuck them away into his binder.
"Uh, looks like real intense work." The boy spoke up, trying to sound casual.
Fugo wasn't expecting small talk but wasn't displeased by it.
"I'm a law student." By this point Fugo had gathered his things, his viola case firm in his hand and his bag over his shoulder.
"Sounds real tough." The boy smirked, thinly, and only for a quick second. He grabbed Fugo's empty glass cup then walked back to the counter, "Have a good night." He hollered before disappearing into the back, away from the main shop.
When Fugo stepped outside, he felt the fresh brisk air. It was careless of him to stay out so late even if it was studying. He enjoyed the shop more than the library but he is going to hear it from his parents. Fugo walked back home feeling dread for how he will get scolded.
"Violas!"
The instructors sharp voice ripped Fugo out from his distracted state.
"Stay consistent, I can hear the pitch higher than it should be." The instructor flashed the viola section a look of annoyance before waving his hand,"Once more!"
All students went back into their starting position. Fugo lifted his bow, hovering over his viola. The instructor signaled for the orchestra to start and the repetitive humming of the cellos begun the song. Then the violas and violins followed quickly after. The violins took the lead and started the main part of the melody, the piece in it's full swing with each section diligently playing their part. Fugo usually played assiduously but as the main flute player took up the melody, the violins were reduced to support, along with the violas. Fugo's mind went on auto pilot and his stance slightly relaxed.
Fugo's thoughts wondered to what he will have to do after practice. He had to get started on an essay that he needed to start on as soon as he could. Fugo's ear still followed the harmonic melody played by the flute while his section simmered down their part. As the song came to an end, the cellos did a final burst of heavier notes before mellowing out along with the rest of the strings. The instructor's fluid hand motions signaled the end of the piece.
"That concludes today's practice." As soon as the instructor said those words, students began to pack up, already wanting to leave. Yet the instructor kept speaking, "Please stay consistent and practice at home. We have a lot to do!" Fugo did his typical routine, pack up his instrument, say goodbye to Giorno, pick up his school bag then start walking home. Though when Fugo set foot outside, he knew where we wanted to go. He sent a text to his mom, letting her know that he'll be coming home later in the day. He made his way to the coffee shop using the same route as before.
