Frozen! Nightmare appears like passive ALL the way up until "Let it Go".
During Let it Go, Nightmare finally embraces his magic, and after years of repressing it, it kinda explodes. His body wasn't prepared for the large output of magic, and so it turned him into 'Corrupted' Nightmare so his body could actually handle it and he wouldn't die
