New York, New York 2019 Silas Farley’s site-specific ballet “Songs From the Spirit” at The Met was fucking powerful. Working in conjunction with @earhustlesq (best podcast out there) the whole piece was choreographed to both traditional spirituals and new songs created by incarcerated men at #sanquentinstateprison. It’s raw and delicate and vulnerable and moving, the entire piece questioning what Liberty and Justice actually mean, and the value of transformative experience 🤲 My father was in San Quentin for years when I was little, and it was the threat of being sent back that forced him to flee the country, leaving me and my sister behind. I remember bits and pieces visiting him there, the long walk to the to front gates, the joyous and distressed sounds from the visiting room, the gifts his cell mate made me out of little pieces of colorful thread. The hardness and the softness of it all. At a time when I’m working hard to see my father more clearly I’m so grateful to see a collaboration like this, between sensitivity and strength.
