the tawny frogmouth is a member of the frogmouth family native to tasmania and australia. they are sometimes mistaken for owls due to their nocturnal presence and grayish-brown coloring, however, they have no close relation. they are carnivorous, and are widely considered to be some of australia’s most effective pest-control birds; the majority of their diet is composed of large nocturnal insects, but small mammals, reptiles, frogs and birds are also eaten. tawny frogmouths typically wait until dusk to begin actively foraging for food. they primarily feed by waiting at a stationary post only to pounce from their elevated perch onto an unlucky insect or animal, snatching them from the ground with their beaks. the clutch size of the tawny frogmouth is one to three eggs; during the day, males are solely responsible for incubating the eggs, while at night both sexes take turns. juvenile tawny frogmouths have downy ‘baby’ feathers until their first molt, and are lighter gray overall.
