Albert III, Duke of Saxony, Appointed Governor of Frisia
On July 20, 1498, Albert III, Duke of Saxony was appointed hereditary governor (potestas and gubernator) of Frisia by Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor. The appointment came as a reward for Albertās military support of the emperor and through the influence of the Schieringer faction, which sought outside assistance during the long-running civil conflict between the Schieringers and the Vetkopers.
Albertās new position placed him at the center of the struggle for control of Frisia, a region that had long resisted centralized rule and was divided by rival factions. Although the appointment granted him authority over the Frisian territories, his efforts to establish Saxon rule faced strong local opposition and years of unrest.
The Saxon period in Frisia marked an important turning point as imperial efforts to bring the region under firmer control intensified. Albertās governorship laid the foundation for the Saxon administration of Frisia, though his successors would continue to face challenges from Frisian resistance and political instability.
