Fils du célèbre portraitiste de la reine Marie-Antoinette  et de la famile royale,  François-Hubert Drouais, Jean Germain Drouais reçut le Prix de Rome en 1784.  Le décès prématuré de son père François-Hubert Drouais, survint en 1775 alors que qu'il n’avait que douze ans, ce qui fit qu'il obtint très précocement son indépendance d’artiste. Bien qu’ayant hérité d’une fortune suffisante pour mener la belle vie, il préféra s’imposer toutes les rigueurs de la condition d’apprenti peintre d’histoire. À l’âge de quinze ans, il posa pour un portrait à l’huile exécuté par Catherine Lusurier, où il apparaît en plein travail, un morceau de craie pointu à la main, le regard levé au-dessus du carton à dessin. Cette même année, il s’inscrivit à l’Académie, après avoir déjà passé trois ans à l’atelier de Nicolas-Guy Brenet. Quatre ans plus tard, il fut l’un des premiers jeunes artistes avec Girodet, Antoine-Jean Gros, Gérard à rejoindre l’atelier de David son futur maître. Une fois qu’il y fut installé, les choix de Jean-Germain Drouais reproduisirent bientôt le parcours de son maître dans ses jeunes années de formation. Lors du premier concours du grand prix de Rome auquel il participa officiellement en 1783, Drouais fit preuve par son comportement d’une anxiété et de doutes aussi prononcés que David au début des années 1790. Happy Birthday to Fernand Léger who were born on this day in 1881!

French artist, Léger (1881 – 1955) spent two years in service for the French Army at the front in Argonne. His experiences in World War I had a significant effect on his work. While serving in the army, he made many sketches of artillery pieces and fellow soldiers while in the trenches. In September 1916, he almost died from a mustard gas attack. Later, he explained the mechanical and robotic figures and machine-like forms in his paintings thusly:

“...I was stunned by the sight of the breech of a 75 millimeter in the sunlight. It was the magic of light on the white metal. That's all it took for me to forget the abstract art of 1912–1913. The crudeness, variety, humor, and downright perfection of certain men around me, their precise sense of utilitarian reality and its application in the midst of the life-and-death drama we were in ... made me want to paint in slang with all its color and mobility.” (Summarized from Wikipedia.)
