Stuck in a contract where you get channels you never watch, but still have to pay for them? Are you tired of paying those high costs for your cable TV package? Or maybe you want one channel, but don’t want to fork out the extra $100 for it. Well you might just be in luck since it looks like the future of cable TV is not looking so bright.  Just recently in 2013, the pay-TV industry experienced its first year of losing subscribers and that downward trend has been increasing since then. As technology advances, the use of cable television will soon be outdated.

Internet TV boxes and streaming sites are starting to take over the market. There are several game-players in the market, some you might be familiar with, such as Apple TV, Roku, Netflix, and StreamSmart TV. There are several reasons as to why many have been steering towards using such technology. There are many reasons as to why people have been converting to such newer technologies, but the biggest reasons are cost and convenience.

The smallest and least expensive cable TV package can run about $30 per month and the highest package can go up to about $200 per month. With Internet TV boxes and movie streaming websites, you pay a fraction of that cost and sometimes nothing at all. Some websites offer free streaming TV, movies, PPV events, and even live television. There’s so much you could do with that extra cash you are not spending towards your cable bill every month!

Both Internet TV boxes and streaming movie websites provide so much convenience for consumers. With the Internet TV box, all you have to do is plug it into your TV and you are good to go. With streaming sites, you don’t need to plug in anything really since all you need is a smart device with internet connection. When you watch cable TV, you have to watch your favorite TV show or movie on the cable provider’s time (or use DVR, which let’s not forget to mention is an extra fee); however, with Internet TV boxes and movie streaming websites, you watch whatever you want on your own time.

Have you ever just wanted to watch a TV series continuously without the interruption of commercials? Well one more benefit of using an Internet TV box or streaming site is that you don’t have to worry about being interrupted by ads and commercials. It’s almost like buying a whole TV series on DVD or Blu-Ray and you don’t have those annoying commercials to interrupt your show. After the blank black screen, the show continues rolling over.

Every month we get it, that cable bill.  We don’t even think about it because we’ve been paying for it for so long.  We might have been talked into it through some guy on the phone espousing the value of the “limited time” offer that we just “won’t be able to live without.”  And maybe it was nice having a few channels to watch whenever we needed to unwind, or maybe we were just sincerely hooked on Game of Thrones, or maybe the political intricacies of House of Cards were just too engrossing to give up.  And although we try and justify it to ourselves that $100 / month is worth all those channels, there’s this quiet sense of nagging that we’re actually paying way too much for just a few shows that we watch.  Or maybe we don’t always watch all those channels, but it just feels nice to be able to watch them on a whim, even if we don’t.  But deep down, that feeling that we’re paying way more than we should won’t go away. Why?

Because that voice is right.

We are overpaying by a ridiculous amount of money, literally over 1000% percent of what we could be paying.  Not over 100%, a thousand percent.  We are living in the 21st century, a time when technological innovation has allowed us to have access to all the different channels that are available globally, yes globally, for a true fraction of the cost.  We live in an era where there is cable tv online, we can literally stream movies online, and just pay the price for the internet service.  Possible to be streaming movies in the say way?  Yep.  What about internet tv?  Yep.  Were talking free streaming tv shows, and being able to watch free movies online without downloading.  This is what is allowing us to “cut our cable bill,” a phrase that is becoming more familiar and more popular as it is literally saving households thousands, not hundreds, of dollars a year.  How is this possible you may ask?  It truly is quite simple, it is all based on the bedrock of the internet.  A worldwide network that allows for programming to be disseminated regardless where it is originated and regardless of where it is viewed.  This means that normally a network news channel that is only broadcast in certain parts of London, can be viewed by ex-pats who want to keep up with the news at home that have settled down in Vegas for retirement.  This also means that every other channel is available as well.  We’re talking live sporting events, World Cup, Olympics, TV shows of every type and shade, even Pay-Per-View events that normally revolve around boxing, mixed martial arts, or the illustrious, drama-filled world wrestling that normally charge between $40-80 a pop for a single viewing, yes all these are available as well. Does this include movies?  Yes, it does.  Virtually everything from old black and white favorites to movies that are so current they are still playing in theaters.  What about music?  Yep, music too.  With hundreds of channels at your disposal plus certain shows that are only found on online sites, it is hands down the most comprehensive and exhaustive selection of video and audio entertainment that you could have access to.  A package like this would cost you upwards of $400-500 / month, at least.  But the real killer is the fact that they will continuously charge, month after month after month.  And it puts a dent in our finances because we mindlessly continue to pay.  We have the option, should we choose to see it, to pay a small fraction of what we would normally pay.  If you go to the movies at least twice a month, and average somewhere close to $100 / month in cable bills, and maybe a Netflix account, you’re averaging over $2000 / year, every year.  And that’s for only a few select channels.  Why not pay less than 20% of that?  For hundreds of channels?  And instead of paying it annually, why not pay that less than 20% fee only once?  Get your attention yet?  It should.  Because it’s possible and it’s very available.
