Hundreds of people marched through the streets of Philadelphia on April 24 to demand freedom for Mumia Abu-Jamal. That day the world-renowned political prisoner turned 70 years old.Â
Mumia Abu-Jamal has spent over 42 years in prison, including 29 years on death row, for a crime he didn’t commit.Â

The San Diego Coalition to Free Mumia Abu-Jamal and the Black Panther Party San Diego joined the hundreds and thousands in cities nationally and internationally mobilizing to Free Mumia and All Political Prisoners on Dec. 9, the 42nd anniversary of the unjust arrest of Mumia Abu-Jamal.

On the weekend of his 69th birthday celebration, the San Diego Coalition to Free Mumia Abu-Jamal and All Political Prisoners held a meeting to honor the world-famous political prisoner, revolutionary journalist, and author. The San Diego Black Panther Party co-hosted the gathering of community organizations at the Malcolm X Library on April 22.

On March 31, news of Judge Lucretia Clemons’ decision to deny Mumia Abu-Jamal his right to a fair trial spread instantly around the world, even though in the U.S., the major media remained silent. Those who were expecting this outcome and those who had remained hopeful — all suffered grim disappointment. Despite the timing of the court decision in Mumia’s case, this was suspiciously released when the media was flooded with news of Trump’s indictment, interviews with his supporters, and many florid photos. Moreover, it was released on a Friday, just before the court closed for the weekend.

As leaders in the vanguard of social activism in the labor movement, Longshore & Warehouse Union (ILWU) locals in San Francisco and Oakland, California, shut down their ports on February 16 to demand freedom for Mumia Abu-Jamal. Their actions initiated a campaign of solidarity for Mumia that spans the globe.
