“A lot has happened since two years ago, the last time I was in court,” Spears said. “I don’t think I was heard on any level when I came to court last time.”
She then continued to detail that she was forced to do a 2018 tour, and forced to change her medication, among a long list of other grievances she said made her feel like a slave. “Not only did my family not do a goddamn thing, my dad was all for it,” said Spears.
“I’ve lied and told the whole world I’m okay and I’m happy,” Spears said, explaining that she was in denial. “If I said that enough, maybe I’d become happy. … I’m in shock. I’m traumatized. … I’m so angry it’s insane.”
Spears said she didn’t know she could petition to end the conservatorship, and that she was told she’d have to be evaluated again in order to do that.
“I’m scared of people. I don’t trust people with what I’ve been through,” says Spears of the idea of seeing another psychiatric specialist. “It’s not okay to force me to do anything I don’t want to do. … I truly believe this conservatorship is abusive. I don’t feel like I can live a full life.”
Spears says she wants to get married and have a baby, but she has an IUD and she can’t get permission to go to a doctor to have it taken out. She wants her boyfriend, actor Sam Asghari, to be able to drive her around town, and to dial back the amount of therapy she has to undergo each week. Spears also wants the therapist to come to her home, so that paparazzi can’t stake out the person’s office to take photos of her.
So with everyone abuzz about the Britney Trial, and appalled and shocked and horrified at what she has had to go through, I want to take the time to state that this is commonplace and a very real threat for neurodivergent folks of all stripes. If you have a paper diagnosis of something it can and will be used against you by abusers. If you are disabled and/or neurodivergent you are owned in the eyes of the law and society by the people you depend on. This obviously and predictably creates situations where abuse is prevalent.
What Britney revealed in this trial did not shock me at all because this is the reality of many many people. This is the threat that hangs over people like me if we dont conform and burn out to please an arbitrary standard of normal and don't lie like hell to doctors.
At any moment if my mother felt like it, she could simply take my autonomy away legally because I can't live alone. If I didn't censure myself all of the time around certain people regarding neurodivergence, I could end up in a similar position because a doctor decided I was too crazy to have rights, and unlike Brittney, there is no mass movement for justice for us common people.
I want everyone to realize that what Britney has said is commonplace for people deemed 'too crazy to function' and disabled people in general. We are abused at startlingly high rates by our caregivers (parents, doctors, etc), society thinks that our rights should be taken away for our own good. I want people to extend the horror and desire to see change to the rest of us who arent high profile and use that horror to enact real change.
Not just hashtag freebritney, but push to pass laws to protect the autonomy and freedoms of those of us who are effected by conservatorships, institutionalization, and general stamping on of the rights of neurodivergent and disabled folks in every area of our lives.
Now listen everyone.
If tomorrow Britney says "I wont work anymore" and she goes off the grid to never, ever perform again.
what you say is "you go, Girlboss!"

This approach of rewarding men for war doesn't work. We expected you to be better bros and defend him from hookers. What is our offense team good for? Nothing. It should all be put in Mothers hands. Globally. @elonmuskfans @teslamotorsblog #Eloning #Rockets
Mathew Rosengart (Britney's lawyer) announing Jamie Spears being removed as Britney Spears' conservator:
I'm so pleased and proud to say, Jamie Spears is no longer conservator. Jamie Spears has been suspended and he will be formally removed shortly. Jamie Spears and others are going to face even more serious ramifications for his misconduct. I said at the outset that my firm and I were going to take a top to bottom look at what Jamie Spears and his representatives have done here. That's already in process and it will continue for as long as we can possibly do that, to get justice for Britney.
As the Free Britney stuff rightfully picks back up I want to say that the conservatorships you see in your every day life will not on the surface look as morally wrong as hers is.
Most of the time the conservatorships you'll know about are nonspeaking intellectually disabled people and you won't hear "they're under a conservatorship" in casual conversation but you will hear "my [relative/child] is a two year old in an adults body basically"/"my [relative/child] still lives at home and we have to take care of him and it's really hard... I'm so strong for doing this."
It is abuse to not give your children ways to communicate, and that abuse inevitably leads to things like conservatorships because "well they can't communicate so they can't take care of themselves so I'll take control of everything in their lives it's a burden on me but I'll do it...for them haha"
In cases where the person isn't nonspeaking it's usually talked about in a demonizing way rather than an infantilizing one. "They're so crazy they [symptoms]" "I'm so scared of them when they're off their meds" etc. (This is done to discredit the victim in case they try to speak out about the abuse)
Generally, any case where someone's family members or caretakers have "selflessly" taken care of a disabled or mentally ill person and it seems like said person doesn't have full autonomy over their medical, financial, and legal decisions, probably is if not a conservatorship legally still very abusive.
Please never fall for people who make the systematic abuse of disabled and mentally ill people sound necessary
