Sea Echoes. Oil on Canvas (ca. 1861) Lord Frederic Leighton (English, 1830–1896) painted this canvas as an early, sensuous experiment in Aestheticism. It marks a clear departure from the heavily detailed scenes of earlier Victorian painters. Leighton was particularly fond of this piece, describing it in a letter to his father as "very luminous."

The Fisherman and the Syren, oil on canvas (ca. 1856–1858)
Frederic Leighton (British, 1830–1896) drew inspiration from the poem Der Fischer by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe for this early work, which depicts a mermaid rising from the sea to embrace a young fisherman. The siren lures her victim toward a watery oblivion. At the same time, he appears caught in a state of "pusillanimous fondness."
