Before the darkness fully took over, Rourke gave what many cinephiles consider his most poetic and haunting performance as The Motorcycle Boy in Francis Ford Coppola's Rumble Fish.

Filmed in gorgeous, expressionistic black-and-white, Rourke delivers his lines in a soft, mesmerizing whisper that completely steals the movie from a stellar young cast (including Matt Dillon and Nicolas Cage).

His character is a colorblind, partially deaf ex-gang leader who is already a ghost of his own past—staring at Siamese fighting fish (rumble fish) in a pet shop and dreaming of an ocean he never quite reached because "California got in the way." 🌊🐟
