Kaputas Plaji - another best of 2018. Earlier this year, we road tripped through Turkey for almost a month. One evening around sunset, a bit before we hit the town of Kas, we decided to take a break on the roadside. I'm not even sure why we stopped, but when we got out of the car, we found a wonderful surprise - a crazy beautiful beach below us! The colors were the perfect palette of soothing pastels, it was small and virtually empty, like an accidental oasis; it was so peaceful! We hung out, took some photos, found some random roadside goats, and vowed to come back the next day for some time in the water and on the sand. When we returned in the morning it was like a totally different experience --- the soft blues were now several shades of turquoise, there were people where no one had been the night before, it was lively but not too crowded. It was such a wonderful discovery and I'm glad we got to see it both daylight and dusk. This beach was really special --- a place I will never forget! BEACH HAIR, DON’T CARE! We spent today at one of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever seen. I splashed around in the water like I was a kid again, practiced my floating skills; people (and puppy) watched - just took it all in and really enjoyed myself. Sometimes I forget to do that, and what I saw when I looked around today was a great reminder. There was a woman who had to be helped out of the water because she had climbed into a cave and couldn’t get out on her own. Another one who spent at least a half hour scaling a rock wall in a bathing suit and cover up; and another perched on a boulder over the beach in a perfect dress, sandals and hat. All of them were posing for photos - most likely for the gram 😁 - and none of them seemed like they were truly enjoying themselves. I know I’ve been guilty of this, but the more I travel, the more aware of it I become. I want to look back on the places I’ve been with real knowledge, legitimate connections, and beautiful memories, not just a well-planned “perfect photo”. And for the girls who want to travel long term - for real, please know that fairy tale stuff you see on some accounts is just that - after all, there’s no way to carry 365 dresses with your constantly changing luggage weight allowance. Living in Izmir with a view of the Aegean Sea from our apartment has been both a blessing and a curse. This girl loves the water and needs to feel the sand in her toes as much as possible, but with Izmir only having seawall access, I was starting to lose my mind. Luckily we found out that some of the most beautiful beaches in Turkey are only about a 60-90 minute drive away! Hello from Izmir, Turkey! It was a holiday here today - National Sovereignty and Children's Day. It happens every year on this day in order to commemorate the first gathering of the Turkish Parliament on April 23, 1920. The locals celebrate by attending local ceremonies and placing wreaths at monuments of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of the Turkish Republic. Now here's the cool part - because Ataturk dedicated the Turkish Republic to children, the kids here get to take seats in the Parliament for the day! They get to symbolically govern the country; they even elect a president who addresses the country on national television! Also, local TV and radio stations bring kids, ages 8 to 14, from different countries around the world to Turkey. These children stay with Turkish families for a week and participate in children’s festivals on April 23. I thought this was such a cool way for kids to learn and share their culture! The Izmir Teleferik (translation = cable car) takes you up the mountain overlooking the city for some really spectacular views! There are cafes, food shops and restaurants at the top, and plenty of places to picnic. Go in the afternoon, drink some tea, shoot some photos and wait for the sunset.
