Governments keep saying that hunting is justifiable to reduce over population of elephants but the reality is that fewer than 450,000 elephants remain according to the Great Elephant Census of 2016, and well down from the 3 to 5 million less than 100 years ago. Less than 100,000 of these elephants are forest elephants. In Africa there is one elephant per 20 000 people. While the human population is rapidly increasing, elephant numbers are plummeting. There are alternative conservation measures that can be implemented to minimise human wildlife conflict rather than killing elephants and promoting wildlife trade. According to Andrea Turkalo (the leading expert in forest elephants) forest elephants have an estimated average family group of around 3 individuals. However it is not uncommon to observe family groups of up to 7, which is more akin to Savanna and Asian elephant family sizes. Further studies need to be conducted to find out why the groups are smaller however forest elephants are difficult to study as they spend up to 95% of their time in thick impenetrable forests meaning they cannot be observed from the air.
