“You’re so soft,” Mikey coos as he rubs at the lemon-coloured beagle’s belly. She’s laying on her back and looking up at him, patiently waiting for him to come close enough for her to lick her way up along his jaw and bite at his ear. It’s a new thing she’s decided is her favourite thing to do and Mikey, because he’s hopelessly in love with her, doesn’t have the heart to scold her. Besides, she’s only doing it gently.
She yips and wriggles closer, batting at his finger with her hind paws and twisting like she’s got no spine until she’s on her side, tongue hanging out of the corner of her mouth. Her tail’s whipping from side to side on the bed, her legs wobbling in time with the way it moves.
“I know, I know, daddy’ll be mad I let you on the bed. But it’s okay, we won’t tell him.” He leans down and laughs as she licks his nose, sneaking her tongue up one nostril before he pulls away.
“That’d work so much better if you didn’t just get caught red-handed.”
Mikey feels himself grimace and then laugh, getting to his feet much to the puppy’s dismay and turning to look at Alex. Behind him, she bounces on the bed and settles in a deep play bow, hoping someone’ll pay attention to her.
“You weren’t meant to be home for another hour and a half, Mr Evans-Manes,” Mikey says, sauntering a little closer and going for sultry distraction but it doesn’t work.
“Check the time, Professor,” Alex deadpans and steals a kiss before he’s crossing to the bed and picking the puppy up. She bathes his neck and jaw in kisses, snuggles under his jaw and watches Michael from where she’s curled up against his chest like he’s had any time at all to forget that Alex is her favourite person in the world.
“It’s okay,” he reassures, fingers rubbing up and down the puppy’s back.
“She really loves you, you know.” Alex snorts but Michael persists. “It’s true, she definitely loves you more than she loves me. ‘s okay though, I mean, if I had to choose between me and you, I’d love you more too.”
Alex rolls his eyes and manages to hook his fingers in the belt loops of Mikey’s jeans, using it to tug him closer and then letting go, only to curl his fingers in his husband’s hair and tug him into a kiss. “Quit fishing for compliments,” Alex grumbles against his lips, but it’s said with a smile and a playful nip. “But for the record I love you.”
“Alright, Han Solo, go shower. We’ll be late for dinner.”
Mikey, unable to resist the parting jab, says, “Does that make you my Leia?” And runs into the bathroom before Alex can put the puppy down and do something dreadful like tickle him. He laughs, delighted, as he shuts the door to the bathroom and leans against it, heart swelling with a joy he can barely contain.
“Another one?” Mikey groans melodramatically and flops onto his back. The princess bed is barely big enough for him and Imogen, but it doesn’t matter. She snuggles under his arm and pillows her head on his chest and for a moment it reminds him so much of his mom that he can’t breathe. “I can’t tell you another bedtime story, Im, your bedtime was two hours ago!”
“But Uncle Mikey,” she says in a whine that sounds just like Isobel, “pleeeaaassseeee?”
He thinks about Alex waiting on the couch, the glass of wine that’s aerating for him and grumbles under his breath.
“What kind of story do you want?” he asks and the high-pitched shriek of delight that he gets makes him wince a little.
“Yes! But it has to have a happy ending.” Imogen sighs happily and pushes Mikey until he sits up so she can nestle under the covers comfortably, her stuffed unicorn tucked under her arm and its head pointed towards Mikey. “Uni’s ready too.”
“A happy ending,” Mikey drawls, tapping his chin thoughtfully and pushing his glasses up his nose. “Hmm.”
“A fairytale with a happy ending always brings a smile to my face,” she tells him with a nod of her head.
“I could tell you another story,” Mikey agrees, “with a happy ending or… I could let out the tickle monster and tickle you to sleep!”
Imogen squeals in delight (and possibly a little terror) as Mikey’s fingers gently poke her ribs under the covers. She surprises him by wriggling out of the covers and, with her unicorn (of course) still tucked under her arm, she bolts out of the bedroom, shrieking for Uncle Alex to save her from the tickle monster.
She ends up falling asleep between the two of them on the couch after somehow convincing two fully grown adult men to put Tangled on.
