Guitarist, Band Leader, Producer and Songwriter Rick Derringer Dies at 77
Rick Derringer died May 26 at 77, his family said.
No cause was given.
“His passing leaves a void in the music world, and he will be deeply missed by fans, colleagues and loved ones,” Derringer’s family said.
The guitarist, band leader, producer, singer and songwriter was a teenager in 1965 when the McCoys scored a hit with “Hang on Sloopy.” Soon, Derringer was working with Johnny and Edgar Winter and releasing solo projects with songs like “Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo.”
“We did many dates with Rick Derringer throughout the years,” Foghat said in a statement. “We went to his home in NYC a number of times. He was a super-nice guy and a great, great rock ‘n’ roller.“
Derringer later turned to production and session work, collaborating with Alice Cooper, Todd Rundgren, KISS and “Weird” Al Yankovic and touring with Ringo Starr’s All Starrs in century 21.
“May Rick Derringer rest in peace and love,” Rundgren’s Spirit of Harmony Foundation said.
