For the first time in ages, the pizzaplex was silent. It wasn’t a nice quiet. It was the sort of silent that made your thoughts batter your skull until you wanted to cleave your head open just to shut them up. It was the sort of silence that pressed heavily on the chest, choking you in its awful, cold grasp. It hurt. Everyone was hurt. Afton was gone. So why did Freddy feel only a tight, suffocating worry? He shouldn’t! His friends were back to normal, no lomger under Afton’s control. But, in the past ten minutes, Freddy had come to realise something. People who said the best method of torture was to cut and carve a person were wrong; seeing his own friends in this state was so much worse. Roxy had stopped weeping now but her eye sockets stared blankly at the wall. Every now and then, she let out a little sniffle then hastily covered it with a snarl. Even the black wire that had come loose where her eyes once sat looked like tears. Monty was torn in two. His legs sat against the wall, waiting to be reattached. He glared at Freddy. Or, more specifically, Freddy’s hands where the claws that were once his own were. Several times, Freddy had twisted his wrist in an attempt to loosen in the outcome that Gregory and Vanessa could not find a spare set. However, it was Chica that hurt his heart most. Maybe it was because the chicken was always so upbeat that it was so excrutiatingly painful to see her slumped over on the bench. Freddy had lost track of how many times he or Monty had had to gently pull her back from trashcans to prevent her stress eating. They all wondered despairingly if she would ever talk again. For the first time, Freddy wished his eyes could replicate or produce tears just to make this awful pain in his chest leave.

A tiny voice whispered in the back of his mind. You could not save them. You could barely save Gregory.

Freddy bit back a pained whimper. It was his fault. What sort of leader didn’t notice when his friends were hacked? What sort of leader collapsed onstage? What sort of friend allowed their own to become so broken?

“Freddy,” Vanessa’s voice cut through his thoughts, “You good to keep an eye on this?”

“Hm? I-I apologise.” Freddy said, scratching behind his ear. “I was lost in thought.”

Gregory sighed a big, exagerrated sigh. “We’ve done all the repairs we can here. We need to look for spare parts.”

“Oh. Of course.”

Vanessa and Gregory thanked him then left him to drown in his thoughts again.

How, Freddy thought, had he let his friends become so broken? He’d suspected Gregory was using their parts to upgrade him. He hadn’t dared ask how the boy dared get ahold of them. This was his fault. All of it. All his fault. His breath caught his chest. The room pressed in closer. He was going to suffocate.

“Fred?” 

Who was that? Roxy? Monty? Chica? No, Chica couldn’t speak. Chica couldn’t speak because of him. Dear, sweet Chica could never speak again. Roxy would never see again. Monty would never walk again, never play bass again. Something was scraping across the floor. They were going to scrap him! Tear him apart! 

“FAZBEAR!” Monty bit down hard on Freddy’s right foot.

Freddy gave a half surprised half pained yelp. “Monty! What was that for?”

“You weren’t listenin’.” Monty huffed. “You was just kinda starin’ at the wall like it was gonna eat you.” 

Freddy let out a shaky sigh. “My apologies.” He opened his mouth to say more but shut it again. Didn’t they have enough to worry about because of him?

“He’s doing that thing again, isn’t he?” Roxy sighed.

Monty grunted and Chica made a high pitched garbled noise.

Freddy tilted his head. “What thing?”

Monty rolled his eyes. “That dumb thing where you put your issues aside for us. Fazbear, you’re the definition of stupid.”

Freddy made a slightly offended noise. Then realised that they were right. Damn.

Chica stood unsteadily and hugged him. She garbled something.

“Whatever Chica said,” Roxy said. “I agree. None of this is because of you, Fred. If anyone’s to blame, it’s Afton and the kid.”

Chica and Monty heartily agreed. Freddy had been warring with this for a while. Yes, Gregory had directly caused the damage to his friends and in no way was Freddy happy about that. That being said, what else was Gregory supposed to do? He had been hunted for six hours straight. 

The voice came again. And who had let him stay and be hunted rather than made him leave?

Freddy shook his head slightly like that would make it disappear. He knew it was his fault. Even before the hack, he’d heard what some guests and staff said about him.

“Dangerous, Fazbear is. Always some dead kid around the corner.”

“Stupid bear. He doesn’t notice anything unless he walks into it.”

“Naive thing, isn’t he?”

Freddy understood that, as the face of Fazbear Entertainment, he would take the fall hardest. And he was okay with that. His friends had enough on their plates. Everything was his-

Chica tightened the hug and then let go with a disparaging garble.

Freddy chuckled softly. “All right, all right.”

Roxy and Monty exchanged looks.

The gator gaped “You know what she said?”

“Likely begging me to not blame myself.”

“As she should,” Roxy snorted.

Vanessa and Gregory emerged from a lift, Vanessa hunched over from the weight of a fat duffle bag. Gregory was carrying nothing.

“Good news!” He said brightly skipping over. “We found no spare parts but Freddy can have his own body back.”

Chica, Monty and Roxy made derisive noises. Freddy was the only one who smiled.

“It will be nice to have my own body back.” He said softly. “I could not bear having these any longer.”

Monty tried for a snort but ended up with a sniffle. “Softie.”
