whenever they are backstage, sunghee tries their very best to stay out of the way of everybody. it’s a truth that has applied to them ever since catalyst debuted, but even more so when they started working as an mc and got to experience hectic backstages every single week, as opposed to a few times during the year, during comeback season. for an entire year, sunghee followed the relentless work of the people that made things happen and realised that they are much more complicated and difficult than it might look like from the outside, or from the perspective of idols who really only have to show up, look good, dance and sing a little bit. it sure didn’t make sunghee envy people who work backstage — but it added to their respect for them.
so sunghee avoids walking around too much, or standing in other people’s ways, when they are not secluded in a dressing room. after realising it felt too crowded with the rest of their group, sunghee had decided to step out for a little bit, if only to get a breather, when they are stopped by an alarmed stylist that just shoves a hand fan at them. she tells them to keep jiah cool while she goes find the make up artist. before sunghee can attempt to complain, she’s gone, and all that’s left is for them to hold up the fan to the woman and try to smile at her. “am i doing this right?” sunghee asks, sidestepping yet another staff member that comes rushing by the two of them. “i’ve only ever been on the other side of it, so i’m not sure.”

end of the year award shows have stopped feeling like anything special since lily’s fifth or sixth year. despite the hit songs that they’ve continued to release, it became pretty clear that all the broadcasting stations and organizers were more interested in grabbing viewer ratings through boy groups. she understood the reasoning behind it, and she probably wouldn’t have cared if she was promoting as a soloist. however, she liked to believe that lily deserved more. she always felt that way about her group.
“thank god. i thought lily was the only girl group invited or something,” she said while making her way towards jiah whom she spotted across the hallway. lily had already performed, and she had made a run towards the backstage area because she was tired of sitting around and clapping for a bunch of juniors she couldn’t even tell apart. “you don’t know how happy i am to see you.”
❛ closed starter for @fmdjiah ❜ / dated: january 2020
it was around that time of the year again, his birthday was right around the corner, but yejun always forgot it and didn't realize until he got happy birthday messages of the day. as usual, he was at the company, practicing. it had already been a year since his last drama ended, many were awaiting what his new project would be, but he didn't think he'd act again until the following year as he had decided to focus on music.
he was, after all, an idol initially, though more knew him as an actor at this point. not that he minded, but he always made sure to introduce himself as platinum's jun whenever he had solo activities. for the past year, he had gotten to focus on ultimately improving in other aspects, like writing lyrics and composing. it was something he was interested in but had never had the time to pursue between his different schedules.
yejun's alarm went off, he looked at the time and eyes widened; his reserved time was up, so he packed up all his things with his notebook under his arm; he stepped out of the vocal practice room.
when he opened the door, he was about to crash into someone, " i am sorry, " he says without paying attention to who it is but when he realizes his chest tightens for a moment, " j..., " jiah.
there was a moment of silent awkwardness building as he stepped to the side, but she seemed to have the same thought like him, and for a few seconds, they kept unintentionally blocking the way for each other. until he had enough, he stood still and grabbed her shoulders, his notebook fell to the ground, but he kept her in one place and took a step to the right, and slipped past her, smiling at her as he passed her.
JUN CREATIVE CLAIM ❛ WRITING A SONG FOR @fmdjiah ❜
一 writing lyrics for blue / full credit / wc: 760 w/o lyrics
description:
blue is a melancholic, experimental r&b/ballad song that yejun wrote with jiah’s vocals in mind. he thinks she will be able to sing the song with her color and is excited to hear her sing it.
when jiah had asked him to write for her, he jumped at the opportunity; after a small talk with her about what she would like, they settled on a melancholy ballad. from that point, he had gotten practically creative freedom about what to write. yejun was honored that jiah trusted him with that; they had been friends for so long; if anything, it might be a given that she had faith in him.
the melody had been set in stone already; all he needed now was the lyrics, complete creative freedom, but there was still some pressure on his shoulders.
yejun lay down on his couch, looking up at the ceiling, and he started thinking about what he associated with feeling melancholic. to be gloomy or sobering thoughtfulness; when he closed his eyes, he saw the color blue. a common saying when someone is sad is to say they feel blue; a smile crept upon his face. the irony of it all, the color blue used to be yejun's favorite color.
it was a nice name for a title; it set the mood immediately.
coming up with lyrics for a song, for him, usually started with the pre-chorus and chorus, and if he were to draw inspiration somewhere for a time, he was feeling blue. yejun still vividly remembered the feelings he had been left with after breaking up with his first love, the way sadness had come over him for a while, and how he was changing.
"my heart turned blue."
he said the sentence out loud before seating himself, looking at the notepad in front of him. there he wrote blue in big capital letters as he started grinding his brain for how to word things, so they sound bittersweet.
my heart was turning blue, became a wilted scent
thinking about the past usually brought someone pain, but he had gotten over those feelings; now, they were just fuel for his songwriting when he needed to feel sadness. to be wilted, he did feel wilted for a while after the breakup. it didn't last too long because there had never been enough time to mourn, but he remembers how occasionally he'd call out her name from time to time.
there's no name when i call your name; it rings out like an echo
in many ways, yejun's first love became one of the reasons he drifted away from the color blue even if he didn't think about it properly, but yejun remembers how drawn he had been to the color red. yejun continues to write.
you are my blue
he sings the sentences aloud to himself to make sure they fit the melody; if his lyrics don't work, it would all be useless in the end. then his gears started grinding, and after many different versions, he had settled on the chorus. yejun rubbed his temples, not much time had passed, and he felt content with his progress.
in the distance, he could hear his cats run and jump about, it was a short distraction before he shook his head to ensure he would focus on the task at hand. now that he had settled for both the pre-chorus and chorus, he needed to write the introductory first verse; it was the second most important thing. the first verse was there to capture the emotion from the beginning and as he hummed the melody to himself, to get the feeling of bittersweetness, recollecting the thoughts and feelings he had back then.
white night is beautiful but it's even colder tonight
match my gaze one more time, a bit more
it was a whole process but he didn't want to present the song for jiah until he had the lyrics done, so there he sat writing about things that could bring out the melacholic feeling in people. even if something is beautiful, when your heart is broken you feel at a loss; one feels cold. sometimes ones personality changes, yejun taps his feet to the beat of the song and sings the lyrics he's written. drawing circles around words, where he has notes on how she should sing.
he wasn't sure how long he had been sitting there, yejun hadn't looked at the clock once but when he had finished his first draft the clock was close to 11pm.
the next day, yejun grabbed his notepad again and this time sat down by his desk. to re-read what he had written, change the way sentences were built and make sure what he had written suited the melody. this didn't take as long as writing the lyrics itself took but after a few hours he was finished. he took a picture of his work, blurred things out so the words couldn't be read and sent a picture to jiah over kakaotalk.
to say that sehoon had a lot of songs in mind that he wants to make a cover of would be an understatement. at some point, he thinks it's become second nature to him by now, an acquired interest from his line of work and the passion he has for music in general. this made choosing a song to use for a cover to be quite tricky. there were too many good options to choose from, but he and jiah have decided to go with ‘rewrite the stars’. it’s admittedly a very good song, and also one of the many reasons why he agreed to do it in a heartbeat. it's a wonderful piece and luckily just within his vocal range. to say he's excited to do this would also be another understatement.
practice proved to be a fun experience, too. he’s thankful that jiah agreed to do the cover with him. he feels lucky to be working with her on this project. looking around, he sees the staff doing some last-minute preparations before they go on for their first round of recording. as far as he knows, everything has been set up and ready for them to go, but it doesn’t hurt to do some final checking. which reminds him. “thanks for doing this cover with me, by the way,” sehoon looks at jiah with a smile. “do you mind if we practice one last time before we start recording?”

what is one thing (a concept, a genre, an outfit, etc.) you would least like your company make you do?
we’ve already done it but the cute concept. it’s something that i didn’t agree with very much. or at all really. in more recent years, some groups have come out that can do cute a little more tastefully. still, it’s not something i want to do or wanted to do.
what one thing (concepts, genres, styling, frequency of comebacks, etc.) would you like to change about your current career as an idol?
right now, i think i’d maybe give us more comebacks? i’m pretty impressed that they’ve kept up with to so far. the biggest thing would be having a more consistent concept. yeah, i hate cute but if cute can build us a fandom, then we have to do it and i’ll just complain about it later. right now, we’re switching between cute and sexy and i’d just like us to stick with something and i’m sure the fans would like it as well.
if you could be in any idol group, which one would you choose?
ah! this is a bit of a harder option, i think i’d like to be in lucid...the most. they have a really fun concept overall. being able to switch between light and dark and it’s more interesting music as well. i do lean more towards their rock sound but the ‘lighter’ lucid sound isn’t too bad and it’s done well.
if you could say one thing to your ceo, what would it be?
well, to the previous ceo, i’d say that it was a good idea to let his son take over. i won’t say the company is the best but there had been improvements with a change in hands and it’s pretty noticeable if you ask me. and to say our current ceo, i’d say thanks? i guess for being competent.
if you were auditioning for your company today, what would you perform for your audition, or what would you change from your original audition?
i don’t think i’d say much, i think i’d try and perform a song-composed song. if that gave me the option to be more of a solo artist. this a copy where it helps if you do some work on your own. i’d do that to make myself more marketable but i don’t think i’d change much at all. i think things would end the same either way.
21. what one song or album by another group or soloist would you have liked to release yourself?
“Literally anything by Fuse sunbaenim. If I had to pick one song specifically it would be Peek-a-boo. I think that was peak pop and something no other group would’ve done it as well. Also Alone by BEE sunbaenim because, not to be cliché, but it’s such a great song and it’s sexy without being vulgar? Which is something in this industry. Lipstick sunbaenim’s Genie but that’s a given, anyone would’ve wanted to release that song.”
she was excited. ( when wasn’t she? ) but this was different. she was going to be singing with bee’s jiah. who was also her sister but the main point was that they’d be releasing a track together. her second collaboration track in fact. but the song was good and when she was given the chance by the company, jynx jumped at it. but it didn’t feel real until this point. the music video filming.
the company said it’d be simple and she was fine with that. she could even see it from the sets that had been built around. “isn’t this great?” she turned to jiah with a huge smile. her arm going to link with the other woman’s comfortably. they had reached this point right? and they still had a bit of time before hair and make-up rolled around. “and i don’t think i said this or asked or maybe i did but i’m going to do it again. one, you’re vocals are amazing. two, thank you for doing the song with me.” the company had told her about it and told her the singers they were planning to contact.
“and three, what do you think of the song? really? do i sound good enough?” she was just a lead vocal and she’d be standing next to jiah, she had to sound sort of good at least.
