Alphonse turns to him with a nervous, small smile, and Ed, despite his wobbly mouth, pounds a fist against his puffed out chest, and shows his teeth. “Don’t worry,” he says. I’ll protect you, he keeps to himself. “There’s no way this’ll mess up! It’s pretty simple stuff, anyways.” Edward has a nightmare that he'll never wake up from.

Ed holds Roy's left hand as Winry works inside his shoulder port to get him ready for the fitting. He leans over to capture Roy's attention.

"Squeeze as hard as you need to," he says, waving their joined hands slightly.

Roy frowns. "I don't want to hurt you."

"I can take it, dad."

As expected, the word makes Roy melt, and Ed bites the inside of his cheek to suppress a smirk. He wouldn't say it at all if he didn't mean it, but he also doesn't want the bastard thinking Ed's going soft.

Roy's face spasms slightly as Winry cranks a bolt or something inside the port. He shouldn't be in pain yet, Ed knows, because Winry shouldn't have her fingers in his nerves yet. But he glances down, anyway, just in case. After a moment Roy relaxes back against the table again.

Good. Almost there.

The arm, laid out on a rolling table close by, looks a lot like Ed's old one. Similarly shaped panels on the forearm and overlapping plates near the shoulder. Ed hasn't told Roy yet, but on the topmost plate he hand embossed a little salamander. It took him way too many tests on scrap metal to get it right.

Where Ed's port had to be anchored directly into his torso, Roy still had enough of a stump left that his could be contained to his arm. So the automail limb is a little shorter-- Ed shoves down the instinctive irritation at the word-- than Ed's old one as far as parts.

Though Roy is still a few inches taller than he is, so his arm is of course proportioned accordingly.

Internally, Ed twitches.

"Hey, Winry," Ed asks, "do you have a piece of leather around ?"

She withdraws her intense focus from Roy's port after a moment, depositing a couple nuts onto the tray in her lap, the metal tinking quietly as they tumble over each other. "Yeah, I should have some," she replies. She rolls away on her stool, digs through a drawer, and withdraws a wide rectangular strip of leather, which she hands to Ed when she returns to the table.

"Thanks."

"No problem," she says, but she's already absorbed back into whatever she's doing to prep Roy for his first limb connection.

Roy eyes the piece of leather in Ed's free hand, fingers flexing slightly in Ed's loose grip. "What's that for ?"

"A bite guard," Ed says.

Roy's brows twitch as Winry pulls out a bolt. "I don't need--"

"I know you've been there for some of my connections before, but you are not prepared for how bad this will hurt," Ed says forcefully, cutting him off. With a sigh, he brushes his thumb over Roy's knuckles. "Listen. Automail surgery is extremely difficult on the body at the best of times. With repeat infections like you had, it's even worse. The fact that you survived the port surgery is a minor miracle. And you were sedated for that. This ? This you have to be fully conscious for."

Roy opens his mouth to reply, but instead a strangled, uncomfortable noise crawls out of his throat as Winry finally removes the nerve cap and drops it into her tray.

Ed gives him a wry look. "This is going to be difficult enough already. I'd rather not have you choke on your own severed tongue, old man."

"Ed tried to refuse a bite guard the first time his arm and leg were connected and he almost bit clean through his tongue," Winry pipes up. Ed shoots her a dirty look, and she gives him a sunny smile that has his face heating up in return. "He's really lucky he didn't get all the way through before we stuffed a rag into his mouth. Still took a while to heal after, though."

Roy blanches.
