The World's Fair opened in New York City on 22 April 1964.
Organized by a group of businessmen who had fond memories of the 1939 fair, they hired Robert Moses to convert the garbage dump in Queens into the fair site, Flushing Meadows Park.
The grounds covered nearly 650 acres and accommodated 140 pavilions from 80 nations.
Michelangelo's sculpture Madonna della Pietà was loaned by Pope John XXIII and appeared in the Vatican pavilion (visitors could glimpse the statue from a conveyor belt).
More than 50 million people attended the fair, but short of the projected 70 million needed to recoup the fair's costs.
