And you know what? I wanna talk about Florin and Ifechi. The (supposedly) french guy with an Australian accent, extensive military experience, and a massive death wish. Paired with a gentle, brave woman who chose to be a powerful healer, following her calling from before the Collapse. We don't see a lot of how Florin acted before the 5th level with the bubbles, before he loses Ifechi. I think that losing her made Florin spiral hard and fast and that moment gives us the broody crawler in the rest of the series. In one of his first scenes with Ifechi, when they are reunited after being separated for some reason (I can't remember why, maybe class selection?), they had cried into each others arms in pure relief. The raw positive emotion had already been out of place in the recap episodes, the recaps always being bloody and hard to watch for many crawlers. I think that's one of the few times we get a big emotion from Florin, it's juxtaposed with his reaction from when Lucia Mar killed Ifechi. It was one of the hardest parts of the story to read for me. I can't imagine the guilt that he carries every day and how maybe he quietly obsesses over what he could have done different to save the love of his life.
