5: is there somebody your character really wants to like them? does that person like your character?

if you asked flori she would say nobody, but in reality? her parents. and no :(

webber kind of wants to be liked by everybody, and takes it really hard when somebody doesn't. but to narrow it down, authority figures. zoran, who is the first officer slash acting captain of the ship, actually likes webber a lot more than it knows. it still thinks it needs to impress him.

19: does your character mind when people watch them do things? is there anything they really hate being watched while doing?

flori generally thrives on attention, but she has a hard time being vulnerable with people. if you witness her crying she might lash out at you. or tell you fairies threw sand in her eyes or something.

webber would maybe mind being watched while tinkering with mechanics or electronics. it's a very personal thing. if you shut the fuck up and don't make noise it might tolerate you. the real question though is if you want to watch that. webber can get a little freaky about technology.

20: what sorts of things might your character tend to be dishonest about?

flori? uhhh. what isn't she dishonest about. primary subjects include family life or anything relating to where she came from, her emotions, and her own abilities, but it's a hobby for her, really. flori's brand of lying is making up some fantastical story that's clearly not true, probably involving dragons and pink aliens and a time-travelling grandma. she will not back down from this under any circumstance, so while you might know she's lying, you still won't know the truth. it's proven very effective at pissing off absolutely everybody around her.

webber is generally very enthusiastic and bubbly, and it wants everybody to like it, so it really struggles with actually telling somebody they hurt it. it's more likely to just swallow it down and smooth it over. it's part of a very rare alien species, and grew up the only alien kid on a human mars colony, so it's pretty used to people being rude specifically about its appearance. doesn't make it hurt less, but it's learned by now that bringing it up will cause a scene and that few people will take its side. it just bottles all of that shit up and then one day, it explodes. and then it feels really bad about it.

24: forget whether your character likes kids. do kids like your character?

well flori is a kid still. but if you mean like kindergarten age, then yeah, probably! she's very ostentatious in a way that many children might enjoy, although the shyer ones might be scared off by her demeanour. she has the energy of the older kid you would think was the epitome of coolness at the time, and then years later you realise in retrospect that they didn't at all know what they were doing.

for context, both of them are ttrpg characters of mine (kids on bikes characters to be exact). webber is from a sci-fi themed one that's currently ongoing, and flori is from a l&co campaign a couple of friends and i are cooking up that will probably start very soon. quite soon. surely soon it will happen. (we have been waiting for our schedules to line up for ages.)

2: is your character easily impressed? if not, what's something that does impress them?

webber is the easiest person in the world to impress. it met zoran (the first officer) on the first day of the cool new spaceship job and imprinted on him like a lost duckling. it just kind of operates on the default assumption that everyone around it is cooler than it.

flori isn't quite so naive, but if i had to pick something that impresses her i'd say it's people who take no bullshit and stand up for themselves. that's a quality that she feels like she lacks. oh, also Talent. she kinda wishes she had more of it, even if she would never admit that to anyone.

9: in no particular order, what would you say are your character's top five priorities?

webber: 1. finding purpose. 2. loving others and being loved. 3. doing the right thing. 4. applying itself. 5. having fun.

flori: 1. finding meaning. 2. persevering. 3. protecting herself. 4. burning bright. 5. staying silly.

15: has your character ever gotten into a physical fight before? not just roughhousing or play fighting, but an actual violent conflict? how did they come out of it?

i don't think webber's ever fought someone head-on (i could be wrong, my memory's not great), but it's not fantastic at fighting. all of the extra arms get in the way. it's usually the Guy In The Chair, it's very idealistic and conflict-avoidant, but it has crawled on the ceiling and taken someone out from above spider-man style before. i look forward to putting it in situations where it has no choice but to face the physicality of a fight.

flori most definitely. she's nightwatch, so her job is kind of to get into fights,,, with ghosts,,,, but she doesn't shy away from fighting other people either, especially when she feels cornered or provoked. she holds her own, but sometimes she doesn't know when to quit. she has nottttt been taught how to manage her emotions.

27: describe your character with a word for each letter of their name.

w - wary

e - excited

b - beloved (even among other players, webber is apparently a favourite, as i've been told.)

b - bitchy

e - expert

r - rambunctious (isn't that such a good word. i love the english language.)

f - flourish (that's her last name! not really. but let's do her the favour and believe her.)

l - liar

o - ostentatious

r - ruffly (a homohone to "roughly", which describes her just as aptly.)

11: does your character speak well when they’re angry or upset, or do they stumble over or lose their words?

flori's number one skill is running her mouth, so i imagine she wouldn't easily falter in that regard when upset. whether she'd actually voice her concerns or just say anything is entirely up in the air.

webber gets flustered really easily. it gets frustrated about being worked up, and then that makes it worse. it would stutter and not be able to get the words out right, all while fuming in anger. plus it has a lisp due to its mandibles, which makes talking more difficult anyway.

12: did your character's teachers like them when they were in school? (Or do they, if they still are?)

flori really should be in school, but she's not. she's always been the weird kid and she never really thought school was that important (or convinced herself it wasn't cuz she wasn't very good at it), so i don't imagine the teachers missed her much after she ran. her relationship to authority figures is… complicated. she doesn't fare much better in the nightwatch.
