He threw back the blanket from his body, needing the cool air of the room to soothe his sticky-with-sweat skin. He didn’t want to get out of the bed though. It was comfortable there, where traces of his boyfriend lingered embedded in the bedding. Rolling over, he pressed his face into the pillow and breathed in for even the slightest remaining scent of Splendid. It wasn’t as strong as it had been the night before, but it was enough to quell the loneliness that was brought about by his night terrors. He no longer had to suffer alone, Splendid would be there with him.

Slowly, he pulled away from the pillow to peer over at the window. The blinds had been lifted, the drapes pulled back where otherwise they would’ve been blocking out the light. The window was open and the brisk, autumn breeze came rolling in in soft waves. Flippy sighed out, laying his face against the pillow. His heart sunk a little to know that despite Splendid’s promise that he’d be back before the night ended, he was not back. He didn’t want to wallow in the sadness of knowing Splendid had to break such a promise, but he lay there letting it take him for a moment long enough to feel its sting.
