i love the idea of a flipped classroom - take notes with a video at home, then when you go to school, you do the "homework" there where you are able to ask questions. when i stepped into precalc first day and she explained it? oh i thought i would love this class
turns out shes doing it in the worst way i think she could possibly do it, especially with the way i learn. the whole point is defeating homework (no im not counting just writing down video notes as homework those are NOTES n theyre different to me) but she still gives us half the page to do on our own.
and usually? she does the easier ones as an example, leaving me with NO clue on how to apply the techniques to the harder questions. it leaves me with so many what ifs that cant wait for tomorrow, because if i dont answer one problem? i dont get any points. and it sucks when i dont even know how to start a problem, and im staring at one problem for 30 minutes to an hour without a clue on how to defeat it.
also, i process videos very quickly, and im also in a house with a bunch of speedy talkers, me included. but she doesnt allow the video to be sped up at all. so despite the fact that the video is painfully slow to me, as well as her speaking pace, there is literally nothing i can do. it just frustrates me because its so slow to the point im not even able to process what shes saying. (ps you can slow it down but not speed it up)
also, she PILES on work while ur in class. her whole classroom protocol of work at school and notes at home is literally already breaking two weeks into school because i cant finish the amount of work in class most days. not to mention, after every question she's asked? out loud: "wonderful questions guys, let me know if you have any! wonderful questions, im here if you need me." over and over, and i am VERY easily distracted, especially with unmedicated audhd. so. yeah. not a good mix.
i dont have any gripes with her as a person. shes truly a very nice woman. i just heavily dislike the way her teaching, because it feels like she advertised one thing and flipped it on its head. it doesnt mix with my learning process, and it makes it very hard to just. do the work. maybe this is exactly how flipped classrooms are supposed to go, but if they are? i suddenly very dislike flipped classrooms and hope to never be in one again.

Some researchers study video games, students’ posture and more as a means to help kids become better and more comfortable with math.
Math is one four-letter word that leaves many teens anxious and sweaty. The idea of an impending math test might send shivers down their spines. Some kids avoid their homework — or at least delay starting it — because they find math so daunting. Their minds might even go blank at the sight of test questions, no matter how well they have studied. If this is you, there’s some comfort knowing that you’re not alone.
It’s hard to pinpoint how many people suffer stress or anxiety just thinking about math. But it’s common. In fact, math anxiety can strike even mathematicians. So having this condition does not mean you’re bad at math or doomed to fail. And there are tips that can help you overcome this anxiety.
Explainer: What is anxiety?
There’s always hope, says Patrick Honner. “We’re in control of math. Math isn’t in control of us,” says this teacher at Brooklyn Technical High School in New York City. Honner also writes a math column for Quanta Magazine, where he shares basic math concepts from recent research.
Even people who are not math-anxious can gain more confidence and skill to better succeed with numbers. How to help students excel in math is even becoming a hot research topic. And some emerging innovations might show up soon in a classroom near you.
There are many different types of teaching methods. There are a few examples that are common such as teacher-centered method, learner-centered method and interactive/participative method but there is an inquisitive method that caught my attention and that is the flipped classroom methodology. This method is a student-centered method and typically is a high-tech approach.
This method was implemented by two science teachers, Jon Bergmann and Aaron Sams, at a small Colorado high school where they were originally considered as a pre- broadcasting. Yet it became known as the flipped classroom and more schools are following this concept of teaching. I notice that some professors at Gallaudet University are using this method too. The purpose of using this method is to free up time in the classroom for engaged learning and have the students watch the pre- recorded videos at the comforts of their homes in their own time. This method would afford the teacher and students to work together on class assignments, learning exercises, projects, discussions and some difficult tasks that may need to be tackled during the face-to-face time.
The several advantages of having this method is giving the students more control, student-centered learning and access to lessons as long as there are effective technology readily available. Not only that, the parents would have access to see what their children are learning online. On the other side of this method is that there may be some students who would be less motivated than others and this learning style might not be effective for them. It might create a divide between the teacher and their students in regards to the amount of screen time instead of physically interacting with people. Even though, it may mean more time for teachers to prepare ahead of time in order to have the students engage in this type of teaching, it is rewarding for the teachers to get to know their students more during face-to-time time instead of lecturing in front of the students in classrooms.

Siento este título tan sensacionalista pero quería hacer hoy referencia a este “tipo de aprendizaje” del que tanto se habló en su tiempo y que personalmente creo que no tiene sentido a día de hoy (ahora lo justificaré).
Ayer mi jefe me preguntaba si podía hablar en un programa de radio sobre m-Learning y la verdad es que era un término que tenía prácticamente olvidado.
El aprendizaje móvil es aquel que se da a través de un dispositivo móvil (tablet, smartphone, smartwatch, gafas de realidad aumentada o por supuesto, un portátil), muchas veces se acaba asociando a todo aprendizaje fuera del aula con un móvil, olvidando todas aquellas aplicaciones que nos ofrecen un valor añadido a la docencia y que el alumno puede utilizar durante nuestra explicación.
Hoy en día y con la evolución técnica de los móviles y la forma constante en cómo los utilizamos, me atrevería a decir que se han convertido en una extensión de nuestro cuerpo, un miembro más; y la reducción del tamaño y peso de los portátiles, no le encuentro el sentido a distinguirlo como un aprendizaje específico, por el mero hecho de utilizar un móvil en lugar de nuestro ordenador de sobremesa, o estudiar en un autobús de camino a casa.
Es verdad que uno debería adaptar el contenido subido en función del dispositivo que lo vaya a mostrar, incluso adaptar el el diseño de la formación que se va a ofrecer. Pero la realidad es que existen pocas iniciativas centradas específicamente en el móvil y me refiero al diseño instructivo. Nadie niega que plataformas como Moodle, Miriada X, edX o Coursera adaptan su visualización a nuestro móvil, pero el contenido y el planteamiento del curso es el mismo que veremos en nuestro PC. Destaca en España una iniciativa del INTEF que si busca esa movilidad, es el caso de las EDUPILLS, muy recomendables por cierto.
Reflexionando en el término m-learning pienso que más que una metodología, a día de hoy, nos supone un medio para conseguir aplicar numerosas metodologías como:
Gamificación
Aprendizaje colaborativo y social, mediante el uso de redes sociales en el aula
Realidad Aumentada
Creación de contenidos
Evaluación
Aula Invertida
MOOC
En concreto para la realidad aumentada, el uso de un dispositivo intermediario entre nosotros y el ambiente, al que se le superpone esa información, es indispensable... y qué mejor que un móvil o una tablet!!
Hoy en día a través de un dispositivo móvil podremos aprender desde cualquier lugar, adaptándose las aplicaciones de las principales iniciativas de formación a las limitaciones que nos ofrecen estos móviles.
Por ejemplo, Coursera o edX ya nos permiten descargar los vídeos para, siguiendo el modelo de Netflix o Spotify, poder verlos en cualquier momento sin necesidad de tener conexión o gastar nuestros tan preciados datos.
Solo nos falta que nos solucionen el problema de la batería ;)
Volviendo a su uso, como docentes, para obtener el máximo aprovechamiento dentro del aula, podemos apostar por utilizarlo para metodologías como gamificación, realidad aumentada o aprendizaje colaborativo.
En el caso de gamificación, se está generalizando en la Universidad el uso de Kahoot, una app que nos permite crear preguntas con respuestas que el alumno desde su móvil podrá responder en tiempo real. Este tipo de dinámicas nos permiten, al menos como yo lo utilizo (y pienso seguir haciendo), por un lado ver el nivel de conocimiento de nuestros estudiantes en un momento dado, pudiendo reforzar esos conceptos; y por otro lado crear un momento de desconexión en el aula que también es muy sano. Por cierto, para los amantes del Flip teaching o aula invertida, con Kahoot uno puede al principio de clase comprobar hasta que punto nuestros estudiantes han asimilado lo estudiando antes de venir a clase.
Para la realidad aumentada creo que iniciativas como la de David Fonseca en La Salle hablan por si solas. Aplicar la realidad aumentada para visualizar modelos complejos en 3D en el terreno y que puedan comprobar los propios estudiantes si su diseño ha sido adecuado o no me parece una aplicación increíble. Creo que este tipo de metodología tiene un sinfín de aplicaciones en casi todas las áreas del conocimiento. ¿Os imagináis que un estudiante de farmacia pueda, en asignaturas como botánica, durante sus prácticas de campo, obtener información superpuesta de cada planta a través del móvil con solo pasarlo por delante? ¿o estudiantes de electrónica que al pasar el móvil por un circuito físico le ofrezca información añadida sobre cada componente?
En cuanto al aprendizaje social, yo hay algo que siempre he querido hacer en una de mis clases y es trabajar con un backchannel (una pantalla que muestre en tiempo real cómo se va actualizando un determinado hashtag usado en Twitter), para que la clase se haga de manera colaborativa con las aportaciones de los estudiantes. Simulando lo que ocurre en los congresos donde encontramos información añadida mediante las aportaciones de los asistentes.

Extend and Empower -the Flipped Classroom: An application of student centred design principles, with emphasis on flipped learning approaches to a blended HE course, scaffolded on the 3E framework.
