Grumman Hellcat MkII of 896 NAS
896 NAS reformed at Wingfield, Cape Town on 9. January 1945 equipped with 24 Hellcat Mk.II fighters. The squadron embarked on HMS Ameer in April 1945. In July fighter cover and bombing were undertaken during operations in the Car Nicobar area, then 896 NAS transferred to HMS Empress to provide fighter patrols during minesweeping operations off Pluket Island Thailand later in the same month. Following VJ-Day, support was provided in early September during occupation of the Malayan Peninsula, then the ship retuned home and the squadron disbanded on arrival on 19. December 1945.
Blackburn B-5 Baffin
The Blackburn B-5 Baffin biplane torpedo bomber was a development of the Ripon, the chief change being that a 545 hp (406 kW) Bristol Pegasus I.MS radial replaced the Ripon’s Napier Lion water-cooled inline engine.
The Baffin was designed to meet a Fleet Air Arm requirement as a conventional two-seat single-bay biplane of mixed metal and wooden construction with fabric covering. It had swept, staggered, equal-span wings, the lower having an inverse gull to provide clearance for the torpedo while retaining a short undercarriage. Armament comprised one fixed, forward-firing 0.303 in (7.7 mm) Vickers machine gun and one free-mounted .303 in (7.7 mm) Lewis gun in the rear cockpit, plus one 2,000 lb (910 kg) bomb, or 1,576 lb (716 kg) Mk VIII or Mk IX torpedo, or three 530 lb (240 kg) or six 250 lb (110 kg) bombs.
Fairey Fulmar Patrolling Over a Convoy
Developed from the Fairey P.4/34 light bomber, the Fairey Fulmar was a two seat carrier based fighter of the British Royal Navy’s Fleet Air Arm. First flying on 4 January 1940, it entered service in July 1940 with No. 806 Squadron, from the aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious. Although lacking in performance and handicapped by the two seat requirement, it had long range and an effective armament of eight machine guns. Generally outclassed by single seat shore based fighters, it was used extensively in north Africa and the Mediterranean.
From 1942, Fulmars were replaced with single seat fighters, such as the Hawker Sea Hurricane, Supermarine Seafire and Grumman F4F Martlet (Wildcat). The last Fulmar was withdrawn from operation in February 1945.
