Happy Tuesday and Happy Publication Day to Ordinary Monsters by J. M. Miro! . 📚 BookReview 📚 . ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️- Do you ever read a book that awes you so much that you struggle to find the words to adequately describe your reading experience? Ordinary Monsters is definitely one of those books for me. The world-building is phenomenal. The darkness is expertly conveyed in every aspect and every scene. It is pervasive and immersive and can be felt with all senses. It sets the stage for a flawed group of characters who have suffered at the hands of others yet whose resilience remains stubborn and strong. It also hides layers and layers of meaning and story that slowly come to light as you realize the story you've been reading is different than the actual story you've been reading. Magic is my favorite part of any fantasy tale that utilizes it. In this story, a child's talent reflects their very personality, and I absolutely adored that connection. The magic is unique, with roots in magic known to the reader. I love that the story takes tried and true magical abilities, infuses them with unique ones, and turns them all into something fresh and new. Ordinary Monsters is told in 3rd person omniscient narration. The prose is so rich and compelling that it is impossible to not read and savor each word. The suspense level remains high from the first page to the last, and the plot twists and turns with unexpected surprises and challenges. Happy Friday! . When reviewing a physical book, do you… 📚Mark important passages and names somehow that makes it easy to go back to? 📚 Take notes along the way? 📚 Just write from memory? . I use little post it tags: one color for names, one for important info like setting, etc., one for pivotal plot points, and one for quotes. Then when I’m done, I can remove them without damaging the book. . I read Ordinary Monsters both from a physical book and from a digital copy- so some notes were taken inside the Kindle app and others were marked on the physical one. SUNDAY SPOTLIGHT is here! In the mood for a fast paced “crime” drama? Well you can’t do any better than Blacktop Wasteland. Once you start, you won’t stop until the end. A one sitting novel! I wrote ✍🏿 Ohh man. Buckle up.S. A. Cosby takes the reader on a ride that’s fast-paced and thrilling. Bug is a good man, good husband and striving to be the best father, better than his own. He is a solid mechanic but a superb wheelman. The kind of guy you can use to drive the getaway car in a robbery. He makes moves behind the wheel that make your jaw drop. And S.A. Cosby makes the reader feel the angst and anguish that Bug is dealing with. He writes in such a way that the reader must grapple with race, raising Black boys in an environment that doesn’t always see them as being worthy. What happens when the financial pressure is bearing down on you and you are offered a chance to be the getaway driver for a nice chunk of change? Does Bug make the right choice? Mr. Cosby does a superb job of exposing this dilemma with great writing always sprinkled with timely humor and a cast of characters that add to an exhilarating joyride. I’m hooked now, and will be reading his other works. He knows how to spin a good crime tale, but centered in human choices and emotions. Crime adjacent, if you will.
