Naruto's actions can give a lot to think about (I'm not saying they are bad), but they are justified because he is an immature boy and prone to anxiety over certain things. Sasuke's actions are also questionable, but where there could be a justification due to his clear lack of experience in almost everything and his very questionable upbringing, there is none. That doesn't seem to matter because his actions are clearly selfish (and Naruto's are not) and he knows how to manipulate Naruto. For him, there is no reason, he is simply mean. Both are a little foolish, both try to protect themselves in their own way, and both end up hurting each other in different ways. I think it would be normal to think that Naruto would have more experience in romantic matters due to his previous relationship with Hinata and that he wouldn't mess up with Sasuke so often, but even that seems to have a justification. Because since Hinata seemed made to please, it didn't matter that Naruto was an idiot, she never gave him the chance to try to fix anything. Conclusion: Naruto's experience is zero. ⦠A thousand apologies, Iām not trying to be rude, I just want to understand. Why, even though both boys are in this relationship out of obligation, is the difference in their actions so enormous? I donāt understand. Both of their actions are questionable; both lie, both keep secrets. But it seems as if Naruto is the only one with noble intentions. He has made it clear that Naruto is the only alpha who wouldnāt use Sasuke; on the contrary, the only one being used here is Naruto. Naruto can lie, but it's okay because there is no malice in him.In contrast, Sasuke's actions may seem good, but they are not, because he always seems to have ulterior motives. Sauke's kiss is wrong because he only seemed to want to play with Naruto's mind, but for Naruto to have intimacy with Sasuke on the sofa and immediately create an awkward distance is not a problem at all.
Hereās a question: is it healthy to try and tally out blame to partners like itās a scoring system?
Lots of readers have expressed the need to have a side, so let us take a step back - you have two people here:
Sasuke - Disorganised attachment, characterising as fearful and avoidant
Core Wounds
Ā· Mother's death (unconditional love removed)
Ā· Father's cold calculation (love as transaction)
Ā· Itachi's condition (love tangled with fear)
Ā· Venus negotiations (rejection, being "not enough")
Attachment Behaviours:
Ā· Walls, distance, coldness
Ā· Constant testing of trust
Ā· Using body as transaction
Ā· Retreat at first sign of threat
Ā· Inability to believe he is wanted for himself
Ā· Performance as protection
Naruto - Secure with anxious tendencies
Core Strengths:
Ā· Assumes he is lovable
Ā· Capable of deep loyalty
Ā· Persists even when pushed away
Vulnerabilities:
Ā· Takes love for granted
Ā· Avoids difficult conversations
Ā· Lies to protect (himself and others)
Ā· Learns through failure, not instruction
Ā· Prone to heroic self-concept
I think and this is very interesting to me as the author because people feel the need to take sides in this āargumentā. Why? Why do we need to take sides?
Both characters are problematic in the story what happens is this conflict of how they behave leads to a pursuit and withdrawal cycle.
So letās go through this
It starts with connectionā”ļø Naruto or Sasuke reaches out, offers warmth Briefly allows connection ā”ļø (desert, gate, sofa)
Threat Does something careless (lie, omission) ā”ļø Perceives threat to self
Sasuke's Response š Withdraws, becomes cold, tests
Naruto's Response š Pursues, tries to fix, gets confused
Sasuke's Deeper Response ā”ļø Feels pressured, retreats further
Naruto's Deeper Response ā”ļø Gives space (feels like rejection this interpretation is a major factor into why theyāre having issues and why communication is so essential for relationships) ā
Sasuke's Interpretation ā”ļø āHe's leaving. I knew it."
Crisis Both hurt, both confused Both hurt, both confused
Because Sasuke is so traumatised due to his family relationships where he basically had no secure relationship he tests Naruto all the time.
Naruto passes the big tests but fails small ones, because Sasuke sees this through the lens of someone who is traumatised it doesnāt matter to him. All failures mean the same thing to him, even if in reality thatās not the case at all. All failed tests reinforce Sasukeās deeply held belief that he is unlovable and that at some point, Naruto, who he has grown to attach feelings to will leave, because that is what he understands.
This is exhausting for Naruto, it would be for any partner. BUT the difficulty Naruto has in understanding Sasuke is Naruto is an only child and had a very one sided relationship with Hinata - this means he has never had to work for love, and that really symptoms when he has to have difficult conversation. He actively avoids them and seems to learn only when heās failed - but because Sasuke is so brittle, he doesnāt understand that actually a romantic partner will fail you. Itās inevitable. The real relationship comes from two people who work through the failure.
Conflict to Sasuke is catastrophic - he does not engage with it, he completely retreats. Itās been interesting to read peopleās responses to this as if Sasuke should be handled with kids gloves because if this, and I say no, absolutely not. Call him out on it. Naruto cannot continue to walk on eggshells and be harshly judged for every tiny (or not so tiny misdemeanour) because it is going through the lens of Sasukeās trauma. Every time Naruto gives Sasuke space, Sasuke interprets this as rejection.
Thus you get ā and do you know what Iām sure people have experienced this because I wouldnāt be getting comments about it otherwise, but thereās this triggering cycle between them of advance, withdraw, repeat.
So in conclusion I would say donāt tally up their marks, thatās beside the point. What I would encourage the reader to do is to look at their relationship in the broader context of how they behave and actually try and work out their relationship dynamics without trying to prove which partner is in the āmore rightā. I donāt actually think either is more right, I think itās just the context of how you look at them and trying to recognise right, the behaviour stems from this, it causes X to do Y.
This video might be helpful to think about Sasukeās responses better, I also think it explains why Sasuke was more likely to accept Sasoriās treatment of him, because that was how he expected to be treated:
I see so many accounts lately of "i suggest", like isuggestforcefem, isuggestplural, i-suggest-hypno, i-suggest-dollification
You know what I suggest you drink some lemonade and play burnout paradise.

If the world is burning Iām cooling catching a tan
In the SPF a milli im really not scared
Iām saying if the cityās shaking
Iām not safe up in this room
And the walls are built of trust and theyāre closing up on me soon
I got no way out
Donāt know where Iām going but itās better off than staying where Iām at now
Took too long to figure out we should find a city āround
The cityās shaking, outside
People are running for their lives
But Iām looking at you and youāre looking at me
Coulda saved this whole place but we let the bleed
If they opened their eyes
Theyād see right through our hollow lies
But Iām saving myself from the tragedy
Had to watch it all burn to set myself free
