NOSTALGIAMARE ENTRY 46: FLASH FILES EDITION (PART 1)
(Ok so just a heads up, I was originally going to do this in one sitting. But because the Tumblr image limit is thirty, I had no choice but to make this entry multiple parts; Hopefully at the most two. I'm so sorry this took so long, and I'm going to make sure I get the next part out asap)
NAME: MY LITTLE PONY: GENERATION 3
COMPANY/FRANCHISE: HASBRO
MY LITTLE PONY
CATEGORY: GAME (FLASH/WEB BROWSER)
YEAR: 2003 - 2010
DESCRIPTION: A collection of multiple promotional Flash browser games that were available on the old Generation 3 edition of the My Little Pony website. All of these games utilised Adobe Flash and were only playable up until the toy brand's transition into the Generation 4/Friendship Is Magic era in late 2010. Each one has been archived, but can now only be accessible by visiting the site with either a Flash emulator or a browser that still supports Flash (Ruffle and Pale Moon) after Adobe Flash Player's discontinuation in 2021. The games can also be playable via Flashpoint and/or other third party sites like Numuki.
GAME 1: MATCHING PAIRS
Much like the last Flash Files a lot of these games already have instructions for the players before they start, so I'm going to be doing a bit of skimming through. I'm also just gonna get games like these first two out of the way to begin with since they're just My Little Pony decorated versions of games and activities you'd find out of a toy box or something.
This is a very simple game of concentration. Once you've chosen a difficulty to play, all you need to do is flip the cards over and see which one's a match and which one isn't. Of course being a game so easy to copy and re-modify that almost every Flash programmer and game developer back in the 2000s was taking advantage of it, Hasbro jumped on the bandwagon too and copied more versions but with different theming depending on what brand they're advertising. I'm not kidding, I think they put out four other iterations but the count might be higher than that depending on what I've archived thus far.
GAME 2: COLOURING BOOK
Another type of Flash game almost everyone liked to reuse back in the 2000s, and certainly another that Hasbro felt needed more than one copy of depending on their brand. This MLP version of the colouring book actually had multiple different sets of pages; With each one categorised into a certain theme (Summer, parties, etc.). Obviously showing what all of these "Books" contain for the sake of demonstration is an exhausting and repetitive endeavour, so I just decided to show you guys a screenshot of me completing a colouring sheet from the Crystal Princess colouring book; The first one listed and the first one I archived.
Again it's a very simple colouring game. You pick a colour from the assortment of crayons on the left side of the screen and then click on what part of the page you want to colour in. This was supposed to be Wysteria but the game didn't allow a lot of spaces to colour in for extra detail (Even the cutie mark was blacked out), not to mention that there's a surprising lack of pink shades to choose from. Was anymore pink too grating on the eyes?
GAME 3/4: PONYVILLE FOREVER/FRIENDSHIP BALL
These next two are pretty much the same game but with different assets. The first one released out of these was Ponyville Forever in 2003 (The launch year for MLP G3), with Friendship Ball being produced and released the following year to promote the theming of the second year. So I'm going to be talking about them both side by side. Ponyville Forever and Friendship Ball are drag and drop scene creators that feature animated props.
What you do to start off with is pick a backdrop to place your "Stickers" onto, all of them being official 2D art that would also be used as backgrounds for the first two G3 direct to video specials. For both games I picked the Cotton Candy Cafe and Twinkle Twirl's Dance Studio.
Once you've picked a backdrop, you are given a variety of tools to use and an assortment of items to click and drag onto the scene. On the top of the screen are eight ponies you can choose from (Rainbow Dash and Minty are icons so of course they got to appear twice, I see what you were doing Hasbro 0w0), whilst on the bottom of the screen are a scrolling collection of objects (Food and plants for example) you can put into the collage as well.
There are also some effects to use on the props over at the right side of the screen, each taking the form of differently coloured jewels. The green size jewel grows or shrinks the props, the orange colour jewel changes the colour of the objects, the pink flip jewel horizontally flips the props and the blue action jewel starts or stops the ponies' animations (But it doesn't start or stop some of the other items???). Additionally, there's an eraser below the jewels that can be used to delete props if they're not to your satisfaction. Meanwhile on the left side of the screen are just basic game settings such as instructions on how to play, an option to create a new scene, a print option, an on or off music button and the choice to quit the game.
Off topic but I honestly kind of love these funny create new scene/quit option screens and how the ponies just happily shake and nod their heads in such a weird fashion. It's like a subtle of them saying "Pick me pick me PICK ME"
GAME 5: DANCE STUDIO
Released to promote the Twinkle Twirl's Dance Studio playset in 2004 is Dance Studio, a game where you get to choreograph your own dance routine and present it to a large audience of Ponyville citizens.
Before you create your performance, you have to decide how many ponies you want dancing and who exactly will they be. I chose a solo performance with Skywishes.
Now we begin choreographing our masterpiece. The eight green circles with labelled numbers on the bottom of the screen are the moves you can use in your dance, whilst on the top of the screen are the record, play and pause buttons that record and play back your moves. Next to those three buttons are different effects and music you can use to change up the routine. There are also instructions and an option to turn on and off music on the top right corner.
Once you have recorded your dance to your liking as well as filled out your name and what the routine is called, you are given the choice to either watch your performance immediately or save it for another time by clicking on the now unlocked heart button.
Such a beautiful dance, almost brings tears to my eyes.
GAME 6: RAINBOW WISHES AMUSEMENT PARK
Our first arcade game of the bunch. Like the previous game, Rainbow Wishes Amusement Park was released in 2005 to promote the playset of the same title.
And what better way to rake in money from parents and their MLP hungry kids than to make a "See Playset" section dedicated to talking about how super cool this toy is!
Back to the actual game, we need to pick a pony before we get on the ride. Of course I chose Minty because, well, how could I not?
With that done, it's time to ride the roller-coaster; Taking us into how the game works. As you move across the CGI screen, there will be a plethora of different coloured butterflies. You have to catch as many of them in your butterfly net as you can by pressing the spacebar; And you will have until the end of three laps around the roller-coaster to do so. There's also a point system for every colour of butterfly you snatch up. Purple ones are worth ten points, pink ones are worth twenty, blue ones are worth thirty and yellow ones are worth fifty. If you happen to catch a dragonfly amongst them, you will lose twenty five points.
After you finished the game and freed all of your butterflies, you have the option to print your score with the print score button. Otherwise you can start over and try to beat your score with either the same pony or a different one.
Looks like too many butterflies got in Minty's face-

NOSTALGIAMARE ENTRY 46: FLASH FILES EDITION (PART 3)
(Oh my god I was finally able to finish this entry off with this part because I didn't exceed the image limit for once. Before we begin I just want to thank you all for your utmost patience and support as I churn out what is probably the biggest Nostalgiamare entry I've posted thus far. This was a lot of work, which didn't make things much easier since I had to do more than one part. It's going to be a while before I do another Flash Files themed entry again as a result, but when that happens I'll be sure to pick a smaller collection of games. Expect a return to how I usually run this blog soon, and once again thank you all for your support and patience!)

NAME: MY LITTLE PONY: GENERATION 3
COMPANY/FRANCHISE: HASBRO
MY LITTLE PONY
CATEGORY: GAME (FLASH/WEB BROWSER)
YEAR: 2003 - 2010
DESCRIPTION: A collection of multiple promotional Flash browser games that were available on the old Generation 3 edition of the My Little Pony website. All of these games utilised Adobe Flash and were only playable up until the toy brand’s transition into the Generation 4/Friendship Is Magic era in late 2010. Each one has been archived, but can now only be accessible by visiting the site with either a Flash emulator or a browser that still supports Flash (Ruffle and Pale Moon) after Adobe Flash Player’s discontinuation in 2021. The games can also be playable via Flashpoint and/or other third party sites like Numuki.
GAME 10: PARTY IN PONYVILLE
Oh boy, now THIS is a big one. In fact, I don't even know if I can just call this a game. When it came out in celebration of the franchise's 25th anniversary in 2008, it was advertised as one. But it feels more like a microsite that so happens to have a game in it. Something else I do know however is that Party In Ponyville (I don't think it actually had a name on the original website but Party In Ponyville is what Numuki calls it and ngl it sounds much nicer than calling it just "Ponyville") is the final Flash game that uses the original G3 art style, as all other games after that transitioned over to the G3.5 look the same time as the brand.
Party In Ponyville is a large variety game with three different places to explore and multiple things to do. The screenshot above showcases the first area of the game as well as it's opening page; The town centre. Here, you get to meet the Core 7 ponies and learn more about their interests as well as where they live.
When you double click on one of the ponies, you will be taken straight to a room inside their house (Bedroom, living room, etc). Outside of being able to click three voice lines of the pony in the corner of the screen, Each room has six clickable objects. Five of which are unique items that make the pony talk more about their personality, whilst the sixth object is one that can be found in all of the ponies' rooms; That being a picture frame. By double clicking on it, the frame displays one of the shorts from the Meet The Ponies DVD.
Four others parts of a room will turn the mouse into a magic wand. Clicking on these parts with the wand activated let you choose customisable options for the room's interior design, such as the walls, flooring and furniture.
The next area of the game is the Popcorn Theatre. Not much to say here except that the inside of the theatre is just basically a video hub for the same separate Meet The Ponies shorts as well as some karaoke videos of MLP G3 songs.
The last area of Ponyville is Party Place, where the real game begins.
A pony's birthday has arrived. We don't know whose birthday it is yet, but we need to get everything on the list ready before the party starts.
Step one is to dress up Rainbow Dash, because we all know Rainbow Dash always dresses in style. Using the three left and right arrows next to the wardrobe, you are to choose a combination of hats, clothes and shoes for Rainbow Dash to wear. When you've finished dressing her up, you can either print out the look, start over with a new outfit or go back to getting ready for the party.
Little side note but if you click on the radio next to Rainbow Dash in the left screen cap above, it plays the MLP G3 theme which I find to be a pretty cute addition to this mini game.
Step two on the list is to help Cheerilee bake a cake, requiring you to choose a cake shape and flavour, a design for the cake, colouring it in with whatever frosting you want and decorating it with drawing tool icings and sprinkles. Each step gives you the option to go back and redo a step if there's something with and/or on the cake that you don't want.
Once again you can either print out the cake design, start over or move onto the rest of the party planning.
Did I mention how delicious this cake is by the way?
So now that we've checked everything off the list, it's time to start the party. Here, you get to customise your party room with different decorations, play music on the radio, look for three presents hidden around the room and find out who the birthday pony is as each one arrives; Including Minty, who was allowed to come despite this being a Core 7 event (Which begs the question regarding why the Core 7 wasn't made into the Core 8 and she was excluded like for real Hasbro Minty was the best pony-).
Each play through of the game gives you a different birthday pony. For me, the birthday pony was Starsong.
You even get to blow out the candles on the cake with her!
(If you're wondering why the cake looks a little different, the game has a tendency to crash at random points and only start up again if you refresh it. This meant I had to reload the game and make the cake again in order to begin the party.)
As a reward for your brilliant party planning skills, the ponies gift you with a printable scrapbook that shows off your contributions. Oh and there's also a promotional thing at the bottom right corner for some G3 party supplies.
Ok, that was a mouthful. There is quite a bit to criticise about the game separately, such as the art style's odd switch up in the party game and how the developers didn't bother to remain consistent with the voices (Especially with Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash and Cheerilee's). But there's also a lot to commend the game on too, especially when it comes to how much variety and effort the developers put into it. On the other hand I suppose they had to given it was released during an important milestone for the franchise.
GAME 11: CURTAINS UP MATCHING
In 2009, the third generation of the franchise underwent one last revamp before transition over to G4 a year later; This being known as the G3.5 era. Whilst keeping the Core 7 group and storyline, G3.5 would see a drastic change in the toy line's art style and continuity. And that takes us into the remainder of the MLP G3 flash games, which were all released around this period.
Just as the name suggests, this is yet another matching game. Only this time instead of matching pictures of ponies, you're matching two similar items. Each pony has two objects on the grass that correlate both with each other and to the pony's personalities and hobbies (Example: Balloons and a party hat. Who could that represent?). Match the ones that go together correctly and you'll find out which pony it is. Rinse and repeat six more times and you win the game as well as some chance to take part in a promotional contest that's probably been over for nearly two decades.
Quick note I think this might be a newer version of the game at hand considering that when I sometimes click on certain item, the voiceover says something different than what they're supposed to say. Guess the game developers didn't want to spend more time fixing it up than they already did.
GAME 12: STARSONG'S DANCE STUDIO
We've already had a more condensed version of the Ponyville Forever and Friendship Ball games with Rainbow Dash's Glamorous Tea Party, so why not have a more condensed version of the Dance Studio game with this one?
Again like Dance Studio, this game has you choreographing a routine with Starsong. You can choose up to three dancers to perform it (Two of them being any other member of the core 7 on both sides of the screen), four dance moves out of six in total to drag to the top of the screen and create a loop of, four customisable backdrops and four CDs of music to choose from. That's all you need to know. But hey, at least they've got some cute matching ballet tutus.
GAME 13: FAMILY SCRAPBOOK
At long last we've reached the final G3 flash game, released shortly before the beginning of the Friendship Is Magic era in 2010. To top off this collection of games, Family Scrapbook gifts us a virtual activity pack with six different things to do inside.
We can colour in and print out three pages with a very limited assortment of colours alongside Toola Roola.
We can decorate a cupcake with three different kinds of frosting, icing outlines, sprinkles and fruit toppings alongside Sweetie Belle.
We can play and listen to a game of mad libs with three different stories to choose from alongside Cheerilee and Scootaloo.
We can have a sing-along/karaoke session with three different MLP G3 songs alongside Starsong (Following the bouncing ball!).
We can dress up Rainbow Dash... Again.
And we can complete three different jigsaw puzzles in three varying difficulties with Pinkie Pie.
It may be pretty mundane stuff, but for the last game of the generation there was certainly more effort and variety than it should've been. It really does make you wonder why the fanbase hated G3 so much for the longest time. (You know, aside from the fact it wasn't Friendship Is Magic...)
CONCLUSION: Well this was certainly quite the ride. Obviously again these are meant to be promotional flash games for young kids so substance and quality would be lacking at points, but compared to the last Flash Files I found there was lots more variety and interesting stuff to point out. Yes it helped that Hasbro published more G3 games than Mattel did with My Scene, but it also helped more that it wasn't just dress up or makeover games a majority of the time (Not that it's a bad thing, but sometimes you need a challenge once in a while). There were mini game collections and a arcade game as well. As I've said before, these are simple 2000s Flash games for young kids (Mainly young girls) for the sole purpose of entertaining and advertising toys. But that doesn't make them any less nostalgic. Not to mention the cute yet uncanny looks of the pony assets in some of these games makes for a bit of a chuckle.

NOSTALGIAMARE ENTRY 13: FLASH FILES EDITION (UPGRADED EDITION!)
(NOTE: FLASH FILES ARE NEW ENTRIES IN NOSTALGIAMARE WHERE I LOOK AT A SELECTION OF FLASH/SHOCKWAVE GAMES FROM THE ERAS I’VE STATED. I WILL ADD IN COMMENTARY THROUGH THE PLAYTHROUGHS SO AS A RESULT THESE ENTRIES WILL NOT HAVE MOD THOUGHTS-)
NAME: MY SCENE
COMPANY/FRANCHISE: MATTEL
MY SCENE
CATEGORY: GAME (FLASH/WEB BROWSER)
YEAR: 2003 - 2010
DESCRIPTION: A selection of multiple Flash browser games that were available on the My Scene website to promote the spin off Barbie doll line. These games utilised Adobe Flash and were only playable up until the doll’s discontinuation and the site’s shutdown in 2011. All of these games have been archived, but due to the discontinuation of Flash in 2021, they can only be accessible via visiting the site with either a Flash emulator or a browser that still supports Flash (Ruffle and Pale Moon). The games can also be playable via Flashpoint and/or other third party sites like Numuki.
Special thanks to @web-back-then for archiving and downloading the SWF files for these games >w0
GAME 1: BEAUTY STUDIO
Given that these games from the get go already have instructions, I don’t need to explain too much about the gameplay. This first game is essentially one of those browser based point and click make up games. First you choose a character (I picked Nolee) and then you go wild with your choices.
(As you can see by this beautiful nightmare, we’re off to a great start!)
There are three sections of this game to complete. There’s hair, makeup and jewellery. To select hair, you click on a style from the book, click on a hair colour, click on a hair streak and click on a barrette to choose. Barrette choices can be optional.
Next is makeup. Much similarly to hair you just click on whatever blush, eyeshadow, mascara, contacts and lipstick you want. Once again a few choices are optional.
Finally there’s jewellery choices (They spell is as “Jewelry”, which only makes me more confused on how tf jewellery is really spelled-). Again you just repeat clicking on choices, whether it be earrings, necklaces, face jewels and/or glasses. Once more choices can be optional.
(The moment of truth. Looks like a female John Lennon lol-)
Now that the game is over you can either print a makeover guide (And risk breaking your computer lol) or play again, though it depends on if you feel like its worth it.
Between 2008 to 2009, My Scene underwent a rebrand; Revamping it’s art style, adding in brand new characters and retiring old ones (R.I.P Nolee ;-;). As a result of this change, the website would also be revamped. The graphics of the site were redesigned, a new reboot of webisodes were produced and reskins of two of the original Flash games from years prior had been made available to play. One of the two being Beauty Studio.
I’m not gonna go into detail about how this version of it works since it’s pretty much the same game. All you need to know about this reskin is that the graphics were changed to fit the art style and aesthetic of the 2008 iteration of the brand, the character options are different (Including the addition of the new My Scene girl Nia) and there are a small assortment of new hair accessories and jewellery to choose from. Moving on.
GAME 2: DAZZLING NAILS
Think of the previous game, but give one of it’s sections more depth and something more than just clicking on whatever. That’s Dazzling Nails, another simple cursor-capable beauty game.
Once again this game came with easy instructions so I won’t explain things too much.
All you need to do is pick a character and then go manic with the ideas. You’re given a variety of nail polish, stick on items and rings. Just click on them, move them to wherever nail you want and place them on. You can also choose a nail size in case you’re jealous of having short nails and want longer ones (haha funny joke). If you want to undo something, use the nail polish remover.
No, I do not know what I was going for.
Once you’re done, you’re given the option to play with another character or print the set of nails you just created. When they’re printed, you can cut them out and stick them on your real nails. It may seem sad but trust me, it was the closest the target demographic was gonna get to making their nails look “Cool” for a while.
GAME 3: FASHION DESIGNER
From the info I found this one was actually available by accessing Chelsea’s diary on the old website, which explains why the layout looks different compared to the other 2 games. But we’ll still look at it as a main game since it was on the main games section.
Much like Dazzling Nails this is another creative fashion game that features a wide variety of designs. All you do is pick a character, use the arrows to scroll through a set of tops, bottoms, shoes and bags and click on one of the colours and patterns to colour in a certain part of those outfits.
Hmmm... Does this look familiar to me 0_0?
(ITS A JOKE BRATZ FANS DON’T GO NUTS AT ME PLS-)
Ngl I had a bit of fun with this one.
Once you are finished you’re given the opportunity to print out the designs and make a paper doll version of what you created. You know, JUST in case you guys forgot this was from a fashion doll line.
GAME 4: ROOM MAKEOVER
Ever wanted to feel like a professional interior designer? Well these types of games are for you. Im serious though a lot of the fashion doll line games I’ve played have a few room decorator/makeover games like this, and this My Scene game is just one of them.
You’re given two rooms to choose from, albeit a bedroom and a party room. No I do not know why they call it a party pad (I guess because it’s a room for parties which begs the question how the hell they can afford something as extravagant as that in the first place), so I went with the bedroom.
Once you picked what you want to decorate, you’re given a variety of colours and furniture to choose from. All you do is click on whichever one you want and it’ll be placed in the background. If you’re not happy with the room you can always press the very glitched clear button to start again.
Did I mention this game is kinda broken?
Once you’ve finished you’re given the choice to print out your room or try a new look. Barbie here is also generous enough to give you a present, which is a picture of herself and her friends (Of course characters and gifts differ depending on your room design). Probably either because you need to feel like you have them or she wants to rub it in your face.
GAME 5: SHOPPING SPREE
This one is very simple. A game all about fashion, dressing up and screaming to the audience “BUY OUR DOLL LINE!”.
You’re given a choice between 8 different doll lines from the brand to choose from (BUY OUR DOLL LINE!). For example, I went with Bling Bling.
Then you get to use two of the characters to dress up (I went with Chelsea and Nolee).
This is where the dress up part comes in, as you’re provided a set of accessories, tops, bottoms, shoes and extra materials that all come from the specific doll line (BUY OUR DOLL LINE!). Limited clothing aside, the game still shows more creativity since we have to dress up both of them.
Once you’ve picked your choices, your characters will appear on a wide background based on the doll line (BUY OUR DOLL LINE!) and you’re also given the choice to print the scene out or try other fashions.
...Have you bought our doll line yet?
GAME 6: LOST AND FOUND
The last few games of the bunch, and I say last few for a reason. Lost And Found is a collection of 3 smaller mini games and activities compiled into one game, with each game not being found on the main games page but through the My Friends page of the website instead; Just like how the Fashion Designer game was found through Chelsea’s My Friends profile.
First there is Madison’s MP3 Player, also known as MyMusic; A Lost And Found game that could originally be played on Madison’s My Friends profile. I like to call this game a “Music loop maker”, because it works like a music video maker except that the songs included are a lot shorter and the graphics continuously repeat on a loop similarly to a GIF.
Just as the instructions say, all you have to do is pick a song, pick a background, some icons (Graphics and items that appear in the background) and characters and then presto you have your music loop. You can also instantly create a random music loop with the surprise mix button, adjust the volume and start and the stop the MP3 player at any time. You know, just in case you need some peace and quiet when the My Scene theme blasting 10 times in a row gives you a migraine.
Next we have Fortune Fun. A virtual tarot card style fortune telling game, this one could actually be found on a separate promotional website for Nolee that was launched back when she first debuted.
What you do is input your name, a question either revolving around you and your friend or you and your crush (Yes, ALL of the questions have something to do with one or the other) and the name of said friend or crush.
And then once you’ve shuffled the cards...
Your fortune is revealed, and when you’ve finished reading it you can try another or print the one you already have. The fortunes are not the most amazing or insightful words of advice and they’re always different no matter if you put in the same information, but the game admitted it’s not supposed to be taken seriously so what’s the point in digging into it?
Finally we have Barbie’s Phone, which was available to play on Barbie’s My Friends profile. At first glance from this screenshot, it looks as if this doesn’t even qualify as a “Game”. It’s just a phone that displays a slideshow of screenshots from My Scene webisodes. However, this wasn’t always the case.
Barbie’s Phone originally worked almost like a typical cellphone home screen from the 2000s, meaning there was also much more interactive features. There were messages and photos you could view, a to do list you could create, ringtone and background customisation options and even a “Shoe Sale” mini game. Unfortunately, this first version of the phone was only available during Barbie’s time as a My Scene doll. When she was was retired and replaced with Kennedy in 2006, the original iteration of the game suffered the same fate and was also replaced with the slideshow. What sucks even more is that this version was never properly archived, and so became lost media. The only things that exist of it are the few screenshots I found on the My Scene wiki such as the ones I added above this text and the slideshow version of the phone. It’s disappointing too because I would’ve loved to have played this for myself and see what the Shoe Sale game was all about. Perhaps one day the actual game will be recovered and archived in it’s fullest, but I guess we’re done here for now.
CONCLUSION: I won’t say these games offer anything new to the table as they just seem to follow the same mechanics and ideas. Customise or create a certain something with a drag and/or click. On the other hand, it doesn’t mean they aren’t nostalgic. Many have grown up with these games, and in a way they do still hold up; As they’ve showcased what could be done in the early days of Flash and web browser content. Overall they’re not big games with a lot of variety and do exist for a bit of a cash grab, but maybe that’s not a bad thing. They’re just simple and wholesome browser games from the early - mid 2000s that can make any kid intrigued for at least 5 minutes, even if they are just to sell the brand.
