The impression Giles gets when Buffy tells him about it later is that Joyce now knows where her daughter is residing, so it comes as something of a surprise when she comes into the library on a Saturday afternoon, wrung-out and angry, and demands to know what he knows about Buffy.

“I’m sorry?” he manages.

“You’re a Watcher, aren’t you?” says Joyce shortly. “It’s your job to know things, isn’t it?”

Giles looks levelly at Joyce and tries to imagine how anyone could tell Buffy to get out and never come back. Buffy, who seems almost desperate to make him aware of how grateful she is for everything he’s done for her as of late–and maybe his perspective isn’t as nuanced as an actual parent’s might be, but he feels like Joyce might be missing some crucial part of the picture.

“Buffy’s been staying with me,” he says finally. “I assumed she told you.”

Joyce looks at him with barely controlled rage and starts to say, “You have no right–”

“Joyce,” says Giles, “I have no intention of turning Buffy away when it’s clear she needs me.”

It’s a subtle blow, and a low one, because Giles is well aware that Joyce doesn’t know he knows what she told her daughter. Her face twists. “You aren’t her father, Mr. Giles,” she says crisply. “You send her out to fight vampires and you aren’t even the least bit frightened by it. She’s expendable to you.”

Giles thinks about Buffy this morning, eating cereal directly from the box and watching TV on the couch. He thinks about the way she looks at him with absolute trust, a surprisingly childlike innocence in her eyes even after all she’s seen. He thinks about how Buffy is a girl who has no reason to love as fiercely as she does, and yet he is lucky enough to have somehow earned that love just by rights of showing her the kindness she deserves.

That being said, there’s the three biggest selling points imo-I think they’re really in sync with each other. They understand the way the other one thinks in an intimate way that only best friends, married couples, and siblings can. And they’re the former two.

I think they bring out the best in each other, in a lot of ways. Like I know The Bullshit in the latter seasons but like, they can have fun with each other when they’re both drowning in anxiety and they’ve both seen each other at their worst but see the best in each other and that matters a lot to me

yes. always regret it.

When will I learn is the question. When will I remember that it’s an awful idea and that, yes, it can be that bad lol.
