MerMay Day 22: Botero
This was an interesting challenge! I was not familiar with the artist Fernando Botero, and his style of VASTLY different from mine! But I enjoyed approaching this redesign in a way that still stayed true to the original painting ("Tablao flamenco", c. 1932) while also putting my own spin on the mermaid rendition,
I've have been flying through my watchlist while getting all of these drawings done!! So now when I look at my finished pieces, all I can think about is what I watched while I worked... This one makes me think of "Practical Magic", which I hadn't seen until the other day! I get the hype, it's a GREAT movie – cozy and witchy and coastal 🤍

Encarna Peña, full name Encarnación Peña Gómez, is a flamenco dancer known during her performing days as La Contrahecha—the Counterfeit. However, she also made two movies—1971’s Las ibéricas F.C. (about a women’s football team traveling through Spain during the Civil War) and its sequel 1972’s Las colocadas.
