All fixed! It took way longer to avoid doing this than to actually do it. Here’s the deal: Circumference of mitten was too tight at the base of the thumb (no gusset for this one). I unpicked the thumb enough to wear it comfortably (last pic). Today, I “colored it in” using shoe rows only on the bottom of the hole, then went all the way around for a couple rounds adding some stitches at the sides. Then I grafted it down the middle, like a sock toe. Whew!
