Cypris was losing the staring contest with the clock, the downside of eyelids being that they wanted to blink on occasion...he was still determined none the less. 

Even less helpful to his state of mind was the cup in his hands; half filled with whatever the concoction was someone had brewed up specifically for the Community’s evening of social amusement at the crest of the new year. 

And Cypris...was standing there trying not to blink at a clock. 

That brew really was just wickedly strong.

Cup lifted back to his lips for another sip, licking the traces away and feeling the liquor warm him up from the pit of his stomach outward in a wash of mellow buzz.

It was nice, he could barely remember his own name, much less his usual social stumbling. 

He blinked again. Damn. When a hand dropped to his shoulder and he jumped a good inch when he felt it. 

The time, eleven fifty-nine, stared back at him one last mocking time before he glanced at the owner of that hand; the woman took a moment for his foggy mind to place. 

Stella. 

Distant, the name, and he was only vaguely aware of her voice as she asked if he were alright. She had known more of his siblings than him, but since the war he’d noticed her more often. She reminded him just a little of his sister, but maybe that was the alcohol playing tricks on his mind from where it was twisting around inside it.

He certainly shouldn’t have been drinking so much, she softly chided him, reminding him then instead of what he liked to think his mother might have been. He cast a guilty glance to the mostly empty cup in his grasp with a quiet ‘yes ma’am’ before he tucked it behind him as though that hid it away. 

The boyish action didn’t fit him anymore, not a child by long years and a young man instead, it drew a laugh to her lips and the corner of her eyes at the silliness of it. He offered a sheepish chuckle as well as the clock chimed the midnight hour. He paused, suddenly determined to mind his manners as he pressed a quick kiss to her cheek.

Ban had one too many beers, and now he had a mug full of whiskey. The bonfire dragged on, people gathered around chatting and music playing from a radio that Ban had yet to locate. If he heard one more twangy country song he was going to scream. A sip of the whiskey brought a grimace to his face, and he resumed staring at the fire. Cypris was sitting beside him on the log. Either Ban had sat next to him or Cypris found him a half hour ago and after a few false starts they didn’t make any conversation. Ban let out an audible sigh as everyone started counting down from 20 to the new year, exchanged a look with Cypris at the chanting and giggling. When the clock struck midnight everyone cheered. Ban threw back the rest of the whiskey in his mug and hissed at the burn. Then he slung an arm around Cypris’s shoulders and tugged him in, kissing the top of his head. “Happy new year, Cypris.”

The idea of attending any New Year event was so daunting Cypris had decided to drown his anxieties in the type of distraction that was easy to get his hands. Bad choice? Without a doubt, too late to worry about? Well, yes, that too. 

It was a game of circling the crowds, skirting them, trying to be avoided while one, two, three drinks disappeared. It was like a magic trick; inhibitions…now you see them, now you don’t! ‘

One more circle of the room, it wasn’t going to be long before that honing pattern made him dizzy, and he scurried into a corner. An already occupied corner. Occupied, actually, by someone he thought he should have recognized but didn’t, exactly, just dark and broody in the shadows. 

And admittedly it looked good on the guy. Really good. Was he staring? Yes,

dammit.

“Sorry,” he hastily mumbled for bumping into Valko, somewhere in the background the roar of people as the clock flipped over sounded but he was just a little too busy staring at the scowl on the other man’s lips. Right, that was the worst place to focus; those drawn lips tense with a frown, suddenly much more distracting.

Midnight, it was midnight.

And he was going to get punched in the eye, probably, but hindsight was…well, actually nothing with that much alcohol burning in his veins so it was the best idea in the world. In his defense the guy did look unhappy, and it was tradition...and all of that somehow made sense when he stepped forward instead of back for the split second it took for that drastically, depressingly one-sided kiss. 

Maybe he’d caught the man off guard? Oh, no, if anything Valko looked even less pleased and Cypris decided, a rare instant of clarity in his haze, to retreat.

Cypris would have been perfectly fine stargazing while the new year came creeping across the world. Instead he was watching the gathered crowd in tense anticipation, their eagerness like electricity in the air. He barely felt it, or anything, not after the fifth or so drink so he could relax.  

He didn’t know the people around there, watched them with hazy wide eyes while they scrambled about in those few seconds on the countdown. When someone bumped into him, nearly spilling the drink he was still clinging to, he groaned in protest and shot a look at the towering figure. 

Ban. Oh, right..he knew him. Ban was a friend! Cypris didn’t have many of those. It was nice that Ban was looking out for him…or accidentally almost stepped on him; who knew. 

The sudden surge of noise from the crowd, that clock hitting midnight, it was infectious and Cypris held his drink in both hands as the impulse hit him, swung up on the toes of his sneakers to even reach as he kissed the taller and rather perplexed man right on the lips, mostly. Why was Ban that tall? 

His coherence dissolved into an amused snicker as he drew back to say something of apparent dire importance…forgot what it was an instant later in the shocking moment his balance shifted under him, hitting the ground with a startled, fairly undignified, squeak. 

Ban busied himself going to the kitchen for another beer when the countdown started. He just didn’t want to be part of the commotion, wanted a second to himself without all the... frivolity. Ban grabbed a bottle of beer out of a cooler and popped the cap off using the corner of the kitchen counter. When he looked up, he saw Wendy standing right in front of him, mid laugh and looking over her shoulder at someone in the crowd. 3, 2, 1... “Uh, happy new year.” Ban lifted the bottle awkwardly at the younger witch who was smiling at him. It didn’t seem like enough so he pulled Wendy in for a hug and kissed the top of her head.
