ʿImrān b. ʿAbd Allah al-Khuzāʿī reported that Saʿīd Ibn al-Musayyib said: “I do not fear anything for myself as I do al-nisāʾ (ie: women).” سَلاَّمُ بنُ مِسْكِيْنٍ: حَدَّثَنَا عِمْرَانُ بنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الخُزَاعِيُّ، قَالَ: قَالَ سَعِيْدُ بنُ المُسَيِّبِ: مَا خِفْتُ عَلَى نَفْسِي شَيْئاً مَخَافَةَ النِّسَاءِ. It was said: “O Abū Muḥammad, the likes of you do not desire al-nisāʾ and al-nisāʾ do not desire him.” قَالُوا: يَا أَبَا مُحَمَّدٍ، إِنَّ مِثْلَكَ لاَ يُرِيْدُ النِّسَاءَ، وَلاَ تُرِيْدُهُ النِّسَاءُ. He said: “It is as I say to you (ie: that I fear the fitnah of the women).” فَقَالَ: هُوَ مَا أَقُوْلُ لَكُم. If the wives of the Prophet ﷺ were commanded to wear al-ḥijāb (ie: the veil), while they were the most chaste of the women, and the most distant from fitnah (ie: trials and tribulation), then the more reason for other than them (ie: who are less chaste and even more prone to fitnah than them). فنقول إذا كانت نساء النبي صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم مأموراتٍ بالحجاب وهن أشد النساء عفة وأبعدهن عن الفتنة فمن دونهن من باب أولى Muḥammad b. Aḥmad b. Abī al-Ḥawārī said: Ibrāhīm b. ʿAbd Allāh said: (Imām) Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal said: When this affair (ie: during the trial of whether the Qurʾān was created), there was nothing that was stronger to me than the statement of a bedouin that I heard when we were in chains. أَحْمَدُ بنُ أَبِي الحَوَارِيِّ: حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيْمُ بنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ، قَالَ: قَالَ أَحْمَدُ بنُ حَنْبَلٍ: مَا سَمِعْتُ كَلِمَةً مُنْذُ وَقعتُ فِي هَذَا الأَمْرِ أَقوَى مِنْ كَلِمَةِ أَعْرَابِيٍّ كَلَّمنِي بِهَا فِي رَحبَةِ طَوقٍ. He said to me: “O Aḥmad if you die (ie: are killed) on the basis of the ḥaq, then you die as a martyr. And if you live, then you live being praiseworthy.” قَالَ: يَا أَحْمَدُ، إِنْ يَقتلْكَ الحَقُّ مُتَّ شَهِيداً، وَإِنْ عِشتَ عِشتَ حَمِيداً. So my heart then received firm resolve. فَقَوَّى قَلْبِي. Imām Mālik said in his Muwaṭṭaʾ on the authority of Yaḥyá b. Saʿīd, that ʿAbd Allāh b. Masʿūd said to the people: ورواه الإمام مالك في "موطئه" عن يحيى بن سعيد: أن عبد الله بن مسعود رضي الله عنه قال لإنسان: “You are living in an age in which scholars of jurisprudence are numerous, while those who recite [and memorize] the Qurʾān are few, an age in which the limits set by the Qurʾān are preserved in people’s memories though its specific words may be lost. It is an age in which those who ask are few, while those who have answers to give are many, in which they prolong prayer while keeping their sermons brief, and in which people show preference for [virtuous] action over whims and desires. «إنك في زمان كثير فقهاؤه، قليل قراؤه، تحفظ فيه حدود القرآن وتضيع حروفه، قليل من يسأل، كثير من يعطي، يطيلون فيه الصلاة، ويقصرون الخطبة، يبدون أعمالهم قبل أهوائهم، However, an age is coming in which scholars of jurisprudence will be few, while those who recite and memorize the Qurʾān will be many. The words of the Qurʾān will be committed to memory while the limits it sets will be lost. Many will be those who ask, but few will be those who have answers to give. Their sermons will be lengthy and their prayers brief, while they show preference for their whims and desires over the virtuous actions they might perform.” وسيأتي على الناس زمان قليل فقهاؤه، كثير قراؤه، تحفظ فيه حروف القرآن، وتضيع حدوده، كثير من يسأل، قليل من يعطي، يطيلون فيه الخطبة، ويقصرون الصلاة، يبدون فيه أهواءهم قبل أعمالهم». Nāfiʿ reported that Ibn ʿUmar (may Allāh be pleased with him) said: حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ يَحْيَى، حَدَّثَنَا حَيْوَةُ، عَنْ بَكْرِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو، عَنْ بُكَيْرٍ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ That a man came to him (while two groups of Muslims were fighting) and said, “O Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān! Don‘t you hear what Allāh has mentioned in His Book: {And if two groups of believers fight against each other...} (Al-Ḥujarāt 49:9) So what prevents you from fighting as Allāh has mentioned in His Book?” أَنَّ رَجُلاً، جَاءَهُ فَقَالَ يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، أَلاَ تَسْمَعُ مَا ذَكَرَ اللَّهُ فِي كِتَابِهِ ‏{‏وَإِنْ طَائِفَتَانِ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ اقْتَتَلُوا‏}‏ إِلَى آخِرِ الآيَةِ، فَمَا يَمْنَعُكَ أَنْ لاَ تُقَاتِلَ كَمَا ذَكَرَ اللَّهُ فِي كِتَابِهِ‏. Ibn ʿUmar said, “O son of my brother! I would rather be blamed for not fighting because of this Verse than to be blamed because of another Verse where Allāh says: {And whoever kills a believer intentionally...} (al-Nisā’ 4:93) فَقَالَ يَا ابْنَ أَخِي أَغْتَرُّ بِهَذِهِ الآيَةِ وَلاَ أُقَاتِلُ أَحَبُّ إِلَىَّ مِنْ أَنْ أَغْتَرَّ بِهَذِهِ الآيَةِ الَّتِي يَقُولُ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى ‏{‏وَمَنْ يَقْتُلْ مُؤْمِنًا مُتَعَمِّدًا‏}‏ إِلَى آخِرِهَا‏. Then that man said: Allāh says: {And fight them until there is no more afflictions (worshipping other besides Allāh) and the religion (i.e. worship) will be all for Allāh (Alone)} (Al-Anfāl 8:39) قَالَ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ يَقُولُ ‏{‏وَقَاتِلُوهُمْ حَتَّى لاَ تَكُونَ فِتْنَةٌ‏}‏‏.‏ Ibn ʿUmar said, “We did this during the lifetime of Allāh’s Messenger ﷺ when the number of Muslims was small, and a man was put to trial because of his religion, the pagans would either kill or chain him; but when the Muslims increased (and Islām spread), there was no persecution.” قَالَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ قَدْ فَعَلْنَا عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم إِذْ كَانَ الإِسْلاَمُ قَلِيلاً، فَكَانَ الرَّجُلُ يُفْتَنُ فِي دِينِهِ، إِمَّا يَقْتُلُوهُ وَإِمَّا يُوثِقُوهُ، حَتَّى كَثُرَ الإِسْلاَمُ، فَلَمْ تَكُنْ فِتْنَةٌ، When that man saw that Ibn ʿUmar did not agree to his proposal, he said, “What is your opinion regarding ʿAlī and ʿUthmān?” فَلَمَّا رَأَى أَنَّهُ لاَ يُوَافِقُهُ فِيمَا يُرِيدُ قَالَ فَمَا قَوْلُكَ فِي عَلِيٍّ وَعُثْمَانَ‏.‏ Ibn ʿUmar said, “What is my opinion regarding ʿAlī and ʿUthmān? As for ʿUthmān, Allāh forgave him and you disliked to forgive him, and ʿAlī is the cousin and son-in-law of Allāh’s Messenger ﷺ.” قَالَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ مَا قَوْلِي فِي عَلِيٍّ وَعُثْمَانَ أَمَّا عُثْمَانُ فَكَانَ اللَّهُ قَدْ عَفَا عَنْهُ، فَكَرِهْتُمْ أَنْ يَعْفُوَ عَنْهُ، وَأَمَّا عَلِيٌّ فَابْنُ عَمِّ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَخَتَنُهُ‏.
