ā Snailfishes are found globally in all ocean basins, from shallow intertidal waters to the deepest depths of the ocean to unsuspecting crabs that often serve as hosts to tiny snailfish eggs.ā ā These slightly annoying but adorable fishes are well-adapted to a variety of habitats, including rocky outcrops, the muddy seafloor, and even the midwater. They play an important role as prey and predator in many ecosystems. Most snailfish species are small and feed on tiny invertebrates, but larger species may prey upon other fishes. MBARI has observed over a dozen species of snailfish in the past 34 years of exploration. We suspect there are dozens more out there waiting to be discovered.

Day 148.
Ti Point w / the Pod.
Today I struggled to get into the water.Ā There was an overwhelming amount of people on the wharf when I arrived and seeing the contents of their buckets made me feel ill. I understand that there is a right for people to fish, to sustain themselves from seafood. But it seems like there is a dedicated group of relentless takers, who are there from morning to dusk, and who do not respect our ocean and estuary environment.
With a heavy heart and a sore shoulder to boot, I got in and decided to swim to the channel marker and then mosey back rather than tag along with the pod (who were going further). When I returned to the wharf, there was a baby snapper floating upside down, and very dead. It would have only been thrown back minutes before I arrived, as it was still floating right by the steps on a strong incoming tide. I felt like lead as I got out, heavy and without hope.
I keep thinking about ways I can use my photos to create change, to show people what it is that they are hurting when they take so many fish out of the water. I just donāt know where to start.

BONZA DAY IN THE OCEAN.Ā
Nudibranchs on the way out. Then I found the EXACT rocky crack where I saw a black urchin a couple of weeks ago, and there it was! And sitting deep in the back was a conger eel (no photo). As if it couldnāt get better... a scorpion fish deep under the reef, what the heck!?Ā
I stayed in for an hour (no wetsuit) and had to force myself to get out after shivering for about 20mins lol.
