I imagine you probably know this, but just in case (or if you want to share with your non-Midwestern followers). The Friday fish fry thing is because Wisconsin was colonized by German settlers, about half of whom were Catholic. I know the fish thing is because the Catholic Church decided officially that fish isn't meat back in the Middle Ages. It's Friday because at some point Catholics weren't allowed to have meat on Fridays. (I was raised slacker Presbyterian, so I don't know the background on why Friday and not Sunday.) It's also why the spring McDonald's special around here is cheap fillet o fish. No meat during Lent. It's probably the biggest German culture thing in Wisconsin, after all the drinking and just before the awful place names (German interpretations of French interpretations of local native words).
I mean, I get Catholic Fish Fry Fridays, I've been in plenty of Catholic areas and in Texas I've seen Sonic sell fried fish package deals in Lent. It's just I've never seen a community where it was on every single menu year round. I'm not confused by why the fish fry, I'm confused by why the SO MANY fish fry. :D
Like I feel like there must be a reason Milwaukee is Like This. When the Jewish deli has a Friday Fish Fry on the menu as a permanent fixture, it feels as though there's something extra-cultural going on :D
