If you’re new to tabletop RPG storytelling, short stories are a way to discover whether dungeon mastering is something for you without much commitment. But diving into a campaign has its merits too; it will allow you to adjust between sessions and you only have to focus on the next part of the story.
First D&D...
Okay, so I have a little story to share with you guys. So the first time I played D&D, I played with my two friends (both guys) and my boyfriend at the suggestion of one of my friends who was of course our dm. So we planned to set aside an entire night for this campaign that our dm wrote up and we made our characters. Now, my friends and I decided to mix things up a bit and bend the rules a bit by adding little unorthodox character traits. Mine for example was an elven mage with wings because I like the idea of having wings. My friend decided to be a dwarf rougue with dope ass daggers (don’t remember what they did, but they were awesome) and my boyfriend decided to go with the generic dragonborn (I think that’s the name) swordsman. So we had a pretty basic set up for a three man party.
Fast forward to what our dm described as the middle of the campaign (which was about 2-3 hours in), and we find ourselves having to cross a large fissure of lava whilst the underground/tunnel fortress we were in was collapsing. I was able to “cheat” my way across by barely making it with my wings (I remember rolling like an 18-20 for dexterity which was lucky as all hell for me considering I was a mage). This is where things got hilariously interesting.
Now, before I get to the finale, I have to provide a bit of background. My friend (the dwarf rougue) had decided to name his character Gouda. Yes, like the cheese. At some point during our campaign, he had befriended another gentleman (can’t remember what race he was) and our dm had allowed him to name his companion. He named him Cheese. Yep. Anyways, sometime after that, Cheese died somehow that resulted in his legs, arms, torso, and head being separated and my friend, being the cheeky bastard he is, had decided to KEEP Cheese’s body parts. Of course everyone was laughing our asses off at the move but we rolled with it (pun intended).
Fast forward back to the fissure of lava and me having gotten across, this is where Cheese became a hero. My boyfriend and our friend were still stuck on the other side of the fissure and them having lots of dexterity and what not tried initially to jump the fissure. They failed of course and proceeded to fall to their deaths. I was trying to roll for some sort of protection spell for them both but it failed. Then my friend, in the heat of the moment (pun intended again), remembered Cheese’s remains.
As he and my boyfriend were falling to their deaths, he decided to THROW CHEESE’S ARMS AND LEGS INTO THE CLIFF SIDE OF THE FISSURE AND USE THEM AS CLIMBING PEGS. No joke. He rolled for dexterity and got a prefect 20 (and plus his stats, he was able to get away with throwing all four at once) and climbed his way out of the fissure with my boyfriend.
Our dm lost it at that point and everyone was dying of laughter for a solid 5-10 minutes. After all that intense excitement, we all decided to call it a night after that (I think. It’s hard to remember if anything happened after that) and pick it up later. Since then, anytime someone happens to mention that night, we always remember Cheese and his amazing afterlife deed.
