Supreme Over All Creation
The English word supreme in this verse is from the Greek word prõtotokos. In many translations, this word is rendered "firstborn" but that does not mean that Jesus was the first created being. Rather. it refers to Jesus' preeminence over all created things. Noted scholar Kenneth Wuest translates this to read that Christ is,
"the One who has priority to and sovereienty over all creation."
Other translations render this verse,
"He is the image of the invisible God; his is the primacy over all created things"
(Colossians 1:15 NEB). Another version reads.
"He in his own person shows us what the unseen God is like, He takes precedence over all the created universe" (Colossians 1:15 TNT)
