Summary: Simon and Kaylee have a picnic and a misunderstanding. The first is imperfectly lovely. The second's getting easier to deal with.

Notes: this is weird? it was supposed to be a saylee first date and misunderstanding and it is that, but it’s also simon thinking about his parents a lot lmao

Summary: Inara tells Simon, in the end, more than three things. Simon has a fantasy. The crew goes on a job of sorts. It goes about as well as they always do. Simon freaks out some.

Notes: just generally be forewarned that this chapter once again deals with the traumatic event from simon’s past coming up and while it’s still not *super* explicit, i’d say, there are more details of it/a clearer picture than before, so tread lightly there.

i did not mean for this to grow more of a plot (kind of) in the last couple of chapters but here we are! honestly what is pacing.

ALSO! allusions to river having an ambiguous degree of sensory awareness of malsimon sexual activity. my personal take on this is that it’s not the same as experiencing it herself but not the same as just the logical knowledge, either. it’s not written with any incest-y intent on my end; just an interest in exploring the realities of her powers and the weird effects they cause. she doesn’t love it, but she’s ultimately not terribly distressed either.
