Today wasnât like most days.Â
Something had felt off. It wasnât necessarily a bad feeling, but a feeling was there, idling in the depths of your very being.Â
You didnât mean to look intentionally. You just happened to have wandering eyes, enjoying the cozy atmosphere of Rosemaryâs Roastery before your gaze settled on himâthe incredibly handsome stranger behind you in line.Â
You did a once-over, subtlety not your strong suit today. You immediately noticed he was in navy blue slacks with a black leather belt holding them up at his waist, and a navy blue shirt with Austin FD printed on the upper left corner.Â
So he was a firefighter.Â
His kind brown eyes caught yours, and time fucking stopped when he smiled at you. You felt your face heat, tossing him a shy smile before turning back around.Â
The barista called you up to the counter, and after you gave her your order, you quietly asked if you could pay for the gentleman behind you. She nods with a smile and you wait at the other end of the counter for your drink.Â
You watch as the firefighter orders his drink, bewilderment crossing his features when the barista told him his drink had already been paid for. He nods slowly with a smile, tucking his wallet back into the front pocket of his slacks.Â
He walks over to the other end of the counter, a shoulder length away from you before turning to you.Â
âYou didnât have to do that, darlinâ.â His sweet Southern accent dripped like honey through your veins, warming you in a way you didnât think was possible.Â
âIt wasâ uhâ no big deal.â You shrug, and he chuckles before crossing his arms over his chest.Â
The veins on his forearms were prominent when he flexed his arms with every subtle move. And, god, he was so tall.Â
Aside from his dark brown eyes, he had a defined jaw that was sprinkled with graying stubble and a mustache above his dark pink lips to match. His nose was strong and angular; something of a Greek god himself. His hair was dark brown with grays strewn in, the only indicator of his age. If you had to guess, itâs between mid thirties to early forties.Â
He quirked a brow at you, hiding his amusement poorly as you checked him out.Â
Yeah, subtlety definitely wasnât your strong suit at all.Â
âSo whatâs your name?â He asks, and you open your mouth to speak before the barista calls your name out to indicate your drink was ready. You sheepishly smile up at him as you thank her and grab your iced coffee.Â
âGuess that answers that,â He chuckles, holding out his hand. You slot your hand in his and he gives yours a shake. âIâm Joel.âÂ
The barista called his name as well, and he thanked her as he grabbed his coffee.Â
âNice to meet you, Joel,â You pull him back in for conversation, deciding to throw all of your shyness behind you. âSo, firefighter?â You ask, and he looks confused for a split second before he looks down at his t-shirt.Â
He rolls his eyes at himself with a huff of a laugh. âWas thinkinâ you were psychic for a second before I realized my uniform says it clear as day.â He laughed at himself, and it was incredibly infectious.Â
You couldnât help but admire the crowâs feet at the corner of his eyes. You were so enamored by someone you just met, allowing yourself to indulge in the warm feeling you got in your belly when you talked to him. Never in your life have you experienced this, but the way he made you feel just a few minutes into some small talk had you yearning for him to stick around.Â
âMy brother and I joined the academy together and now we work at the same station.â Heâs thoughtful when he speaks, a telltale sign that him and his brother might be close.Â
âThatâs really cool. Bet itâs fun working beside him.â You say lamely, internally cringing at yourself for your awful attempt at flirting.Â
He doesnât seem to notice, and thank god for that.Â
âIt is, when heâs not beinâ a pain in my ass.âÂ
âYounger brother Iâm assuming?â You guess, and Joel looks at you quizzically.Â
âAlright, yâsure youâre not psychic or somethinâ?âÂ
You smile and shake your head. âNot at all, Joel. Just good at picking up context clues.âÂ
âWhat about the one where I was gonna ask a gorgeous stranger for her number?â His teasing tone warms you, and you bite your lip to suppress the face-splitting smile that was threatening to spill onto your lips.Â
âWhoâs the stranger? Lucky girl she is.â You play along.Â
âSome kind samaritan who decided to pay for my much needed coffee this fine summer morning.â He hums, leaning against the wall next to him.Â
âMm. In that case,â You reach over to the section with the fixings for drinks, grabbing a napkin. You pull a pen out of your purse before scribbling your name and number on the napkin, handing it to Joel. âThere you are.âÂ
He waves the napkin in between both of your bodies, eyes alight with happiness.Â
âDefinitely usinâ this to text the gorgeous stranger nâ ask her on a date.âÂ
âLucky girl. Hope sheâll say yes.â You nudge him softly.Â
âI hope she does too,â He grins, looking down at his watch-clad wristâgreen band with a black and gray face. His brow furrows and he sighs, taking another sip of his coffee. ââM real sorry darlinâ I gotta jam. My shift starts in twenty minutes.âÂ
âNo worries, Joel. Hope you have a good shift.âÂ
âThank you darlinâ. Iâll keep in touch.â He holds up the napkin with a smirk, turning to walk out of the front door.Â
You watch as he walks to his truck before exiting the side door, walking back to your apartment.Â
-
âDoes this mean you have a date for my wedding?â Your sister asks excitedly on the other end of the receiver.Â
âSeriously? I just met this man today.â You roll your eyes and continue jotting down grocery items you need to stock up on on a pad of paper.Â
âSo what? If you guys hit it off that quick then maybe heâd wanna tag along.âÂ
âYou do realize that heâd have to meet the whole family, right? I wouldnât subject him to that. Plus, weâre getting too ahead of ourselves. I donât even know if this is gonna go anywhere yet.âÂ
âOh come on. Live a little. Let yourself be happy for once, sis.â Your sister is persistent, youâll give her that.Â
âI was fine being single before our small interaction this morning, and Iâll be fine at your wedding without a date too. Iâm fine.â Which is sort of true, sort of a lie. You didnât mind being single, because, hell, it had its perks.Â
But another part of youâdeep, deep down in the depths of your being, so badly wanted someone to give a shit about you in a romantic sense. You yearned for someone to hold you, someone to do cheesy shit with, someone that you could call home.Â
Your sister sighs on the other end of the line. âI know youâre Miss Independent and all, but you need to learn to let go of the reins a little bit. The world wonât end if you give up an ounce of control.âÂ
You hated when she was right. Your sister, being a few years older than you, always had the superiority complex with I told you soâs plastered across her forehead.Â
You couldnât deny the truth, though, and the truth was you really needed to let yourself have this. Let go and unashamedly let this kind, handsome man take you out on a date. Let him sweep you off your feet. Let him treat you right, because itâd been few far and between since a man has done that for you.Â
If the way you felt around him this morning was any indication that you should just relinquish control, that was it.Â
âFine. But Iâm still not inviting him to your wedding.âÂ
And your sister laughs heartily, making you crack a small smile.Â
âRight. I gotta go, but keep me updated on him!âÂ
âI will. Love you.â And she says it back, hanging up the phone. You sigh and stare down at your grocery list, continuing where you left off.Â
Not even five minutes later, your phone buzzed again. A text from an unknown number.Â
Unknown number:Â
This wouldnât happen to be the pretty stranger I met at Rosemaryâs this morning, would it? ;)
You laugh at the text, biting to suppress a growing smile as you type a response.Â
You:Â
Depends, is this the handsome firefighter who put the number on the napkin to good use?Â
You saved the number under âJoelâ, finishing off your list before you received another text.Â
Joel:Â
Sure is, sweetheart. Although I wouldnât necessarily say âhandsome.â Glad to know the number you gave me wasnât fake.Â
You:Â
Me? Give you a fake number? Now that would just be downright stupid of me, wouldnât it?Â
Joel:
Stupid how?Â
You:Â
Why would I give up an opportunity to get to know a (yes, very handsome, by the way) man such as yourself?Â
Joel:
You flatter me, sweetheart. Iâm glad we met this morning.Â
You canât contain your smile anymore, having half a mind to drive down to the fire station to see him in person again.Â
You:Â
Iâm glad we did too, Joel.Â
Joel:
Watcha up to right now?Â
You:Â
Heading for the grocery store :) I need to restock a bunch of stuff. Howâs your shift going?Â
You double check your purse for everything you need before you stuff your grocery list and phone into your bag, grabbing your keys before locking up and heading out.Â
The drive to the grocery store was only ten minutes. Emerald Eyes by Fleetwood Mac softly played through the speakers in your car, and you wondered briefly what kind of music Joel liked to listen to. You smile softly at yourself at the thought of him once more, shaking your head as the light turned green. You had to get a grip.Â
And then, halfway through the intersection, a loud crash had sounded. It took you several seconds as shock and adrenaline coursed through your body that you realized you were the one who got hit. You hit your head on the driverâs side window, a throbbing pain nearly unbearable sprouting within seconds. Your car spun out, glass shattering everywhere and airbag deploying as you gripped onto the steering wheel for dear life.
âShit shit shit!â You cry, and once your car was at a stand still, you tried your hardest to look out at the scene to decipher what happened. You know your light was green, so someone mustâve run the red.Â
Other civilians pulled over and gathered around the accident, and you hoped someone was calling 911. Your vision became blurry as your head was pounding, and you groaned in pain as you tried to open the driverâs side door of your car. Your limbs felt like steel. You were shaky as you attempted to shove at your door, but you realized the door was stuck. You were trapped in your car.Â
Panic started to seize your whole body until you heard the faint wail of sirens.Â
Good. Someone called for help. Good. Good good good, you repeated in your head.Â
The sirens started to get closer, and you heard people shouting once the firetruck, ambulance, and cops arrived on the scene.Â
Joelâs seen many nasty accidents before. The most gruesome, heart wrenching things nobody should ever have to see.Â
And yet, he didnât feel panicked when he was rescuing people, being the hero everyone claims he is. But when he saw that the woman who got hit was you, he started to internally panic. He seized up at the sight of you with tears in your eyes, blood dripping down the side of your face from the cuts of shattered glass.Â
âWe gotta get her out of there. Tommy, hand me the jaws.âÂ
âJoel, we need to wait for Capâs orders.âÂ
âIâll get them myself.â Joel grits, passing by his Captain to grab the jaws.Â
âMiller, what are you doing?â His Captain asks, and Joel looks at the man.Â
âI know that woman in that car. Her door is stuck.â Joelâs desperate eyes trail back to your totaled car, and his Captain nods.
âHave Tommy help you.â He says, and Joel nods. Joel motions for Tommy to follow him.Â
âHey sweetheart,â You hear Joelâs voice, and you swear youâre hallucinating until you see he approaches your car in a hurry. âWeâre gonna get you out, okay? I promise youâll be out soon.âÂ
His voice is soothing, and a sob leaves your throat at his familiar, kind face.Â
âYouâre gonna hear some loud creakinâ but itâs jusâ me gettinâ the door open.â He warns, and a few seconds later you hear the loud groan of metal being pried with something sturdy. The door pops open a minute later, and Joel reaches over to unbuckle your seatbelt before lifting you out of your car. His muscles ripple beneath you even through all of his gear, careful not to jostle you too much. He didnât know the extent of your injuries, but he was hoping they werenât too bad.Â
âHey, youâre okay darlin.â I got ya. Letâs let the EMTâs check you out to make sure youâre okay.â Joel places you on a stretcher while the EMTâs get to work, asking you a bunch of questions that you try to answer. Youâre still a bit shaken up, but they concluded that youâd be fine. You only had a few cuts and bruises, and they cleaned up the blood swiftly.Â
You were fine to walk, so Joel gently draped a blanket over your shoulders as you sat on the ambulanceâs bumper. He sat down beside you and sighed as you both looked out to the other car that hit you. A police officer came up to you and asked for your information, letting you know the person who hit you was texting and driving.Â
âAre they okay?â You ask the officer, and she nods.Â
âTheyâll be fine. You both got very lucky today.â She says, walking off to talk with the few other officers on the scene.Â
âYou okay?â Joel asks, and you look up at him. Worry is blatantly evident in his eyes, and it makes you melt. You just met this man hours prior and he cares about you much more than you probably deserve.Â
âIâm fine. âS gonna fucking suck trying to find a new car, though.â You huff a laugh, and Joel grins as he stares down at his hands knotted in his lap.Â
âListen, I know we just met nâ all, but seeing you like that in your car scared the hell outta me, nâ Iâd never ask a lady for permission to kiss her before the first date, but I justââ
You lay a hand on his arm, a smile on your face as you try to stop his rambling. Your sisterâs words from earlier replayed themselves in your head: You need to learn to let go of the reins a little bit. The world wonât end if you give up an ounce of control.
And so you did just that. It was time you stopped worrying about the consequences of falling, because fuck did you deserve happiness. You had quite the hunch that Joel could give you just that.Â
Any man that saves me from being trapped inside of a car, is a man Iâll let kiss me anyday.â Your voice is gentle as you look at him with a burning desire.Â
And he does. He smiles softly and leans in, his plush lips enveloping yours in a steady, calculated motion.Â
Youâd be a goddamn liar if you said you didnât feel like you were floating. You gasped softly into the kiss, and a knowing smile curled onto Joelâs lips as he pulled away in the slightest.Â
âI feel it too.â And his lips are on yours again. You thread a hand through his thick locks, deepening the kiss marginally, until you hear a throat clear before you.Â
âReally, Miller?â One of his coworkers said with a shit-eating grin, and a man, whoâs name you think is Tommy, pipes up as well.Â
âAh, so this is the woman youâve been talkinâ my ear off all day about. Nice to meet you darlinâ, Iâm Joelâs brother.â He sticks his hand out and you shake it while introducing yourself, turning to Joel after with an eyebrow raised.Â
âTalking about me all day, hm?â You tease, and his cheeks burn bright red. He clears his throat and waves his hand out in front of himself, brushing you guys off.Â
âWhatever.â He mumbles toward Tommy and his coworker, and they laugh as they begin to walk away.Â
âItâs alright. I was talking about you today, too.â You avow to him.Â
His eyebrows raise in shock.Â
âTo who?â He asks.Â
âMy sister.â
âMm. Nâ whatâd she have to say?â He questions, leaning in closer to you once more.Â
âShe said I should give it a shot with you.âÂ
âReally? And what do you think about that?â A smirk makes its way onto his plush lips, and your face heats at his question. You decided to be honest with him anyway.Â
âTold her Iâd give it a shot.â You bite your lip to keep from smiling too hard, heart thumping in your chest as a low chuckle rumbles through his throat.Â
ââM real glad yâdid, sweetheart.â He presses his lips to yours once more, butterflies raging through your whole body. Your veins are pumping with excitement and adrenaline, reveling in the man that is Joel Miller.Â

You lie there, consumed by sheer bliss for a short moment. With a deliberate rise, you stand and traverse the expanse of the living room until you're standing inches from him, close enough to feel the heat radiating off his body.
He looks down at you, a hint of uncertainty flickering in his eyes, his pupils blown open with lust. You can tell heâs trying to anticipate your next move. The air is thick with tension. All it would take is one touch, a feathery graze along his bulge, and he wouldn't be able to resist any longer. He wouldnât stop you if you tried.
But no, you donât reach for him. Instead, you lift the fingers that glisten with your release to his lips. His mouth gently opens and you glide them over his warm tongue, granting him an intimate taste of you. His lips close around your fingers and mmm.
âJust a little appetizer, you know, to hold you over âtil dinner,â you say with a wink.
Joel had a taste, and now heâs starving.Â

synopsis: you and joel take a road trip to san antonio for your sisterâs wedding, and with feelings at an all-time high, you find it nearly impossible to resist each other.
âSo what time are you and Joel leaving tomorrow?â Your sister asks on the other end of the line.Â
Tomorrow was the rehearsal dinner for her wedding, and you had to drive out to San Antonio. Joel promised you countless times that he was more than happy to accompany you to the wedding, even though you warned him countless times about your family.Â
âProbably around ten. Heâs spending the night tonight so we can just get ready and leave in the morning.â Youâre folding the last of your clothes to pack, phone tucked between your shoulder and ear as you mentally double check that you have everything you need in your suitcase.Â
âOkay, good. Momâs kind of upset that she hasnât met this âmystery manâ as she calls it. Sheâs been dying to know all the details.âÂ
You roll your eyes and sigh, already knowing this weekend was going to be absolutely exhausting dealing with everyone.Â
âSheâll literally meet him tomorrow. I kept our relationship at bay because of how she gets. Not to mention Andrew and Cole, and god knows what theyâll say to Joel tomorrow.âÂ
Your sister laughs, âThatâs true. Canât imagine they wonât harass him about treating you right. Iâll make sure to keep them in check.âÂ
âEm, you know they will. They hovered when Christian and I broke up.âÂ
âI know. But Joelâs a good man. The whole family will love him.âÂ
âI really hope youâre right.âÂ
âAlways am. Call it big sisterâs intuition.âÂ
âFunny.â You scoff with a smile, closing your suitcase.Â
âI know. Hey, Josh and I have to talk to the wedding planner about a few last minute details. Iâll see you tomorrow, okay?â She says.Â
âSee you tomorrow, Em. Love you.âÂ
âLove you too!âÂ
The line goes dead and you sigh, tossing your phone onto your bed. You were trying to mentally prepare yourself for the hellfire you were going to receive after keeping Joel a secret for awhile. You looked at your bedside table and the alarm clock on top of it, red numbers blinking at you to remind you you still had a few more hours until Joel would be coming over.Â
Nerves settled in about him meeting your family, but nobody could resist Joel and his Southern charm. You couldnât help but fantasize that your whole family loved him, welcoming him in with open arms. God, you hope that was the case.Â
-
You killed time by cooking some dinner and watching some more of The Bachelor, feeding into the drama of the show. You were so invested that you almost didnât hear the knock on your door.Â
The feeling of giddiness took over your body as you opened the door, revealing your boyfriend. He had a small smile on his face, but his eyes were tired.Â
âHey baby,â You say, stepping to the side for him, âCâmon in. I made us some dinner. Figured you could eat after your shift.âÂ
Joel groans in appreciation. âThank you darlinâ.â He sets his bag down and closes your door, locking it before wrapping his arms around you. He buried his face into your neck, breathing in your scent for a minute.Â
You could sense something was wrong, but you didnât want to push him about it. Maybe a little shove wouldnât hurt, though.
You run your fingers through his soft curls before turning your head to the side to kiss his neck, separating yourself from him for a brief moment.Â
âYou okay?â Worry was evident in your voice, and he couldnât help but melt at the concern written all over your face as you took his in between your hands.Â
He nodded, but you werenât convinced. You could see it in his eyes, sensing that he was holding something back.Â
âYou can talk to me, you know. If youâd like. I donât want to push you if youâre not ready, though.â You take his hand and lead him to the couch, coaxing him to sit down. You climbed behind him, sitting down to slot your thighs on either side of his.Â
You start to rub his back, slowly putting pressure on any knots that youâd found. You kiss him between his shoulder blades, silence consuming the both of you for a good few minutes before you hear his faint whisper.Â
âRough shift. Had a call that didnât go so well. Kinda shook up the whole firehouse.âÂ
âOh, baby, Iâm so sorry.â You wrap your arms around his torso, resting your cheek on his back. His hands cover yours and swipe his thumbs over you.Â
You hear him sniffle and your head shoots up, attempting to turn his head toward you. He resists at first, but eventually melts into your soft touch and turns his face toward yours as you slightly lean over his broad frame.Â
âItâs okay, Joel. You never have to hide how youâre feeling from me. If you need to cry about it, thatâs fine. Iâll never think youâre less of a man for showing your emotions.âÂ
He offers you a small smile before leaning in to kiss your forehead, softly knocking his against yours as he sighs.Â
âIâve been so used to suppressinâ rough calls for years. Nobody to turn to except my coworkers nâ Tommy, and even then itâs not somethinâ we all collectively talk about. My ex,â He huffs an angry laugh at the mention of her, âSarahâs mom. Sheâ she always told me that cryinâ about how tough my job can be sometimes isnât somethinâ a real man does. No man should cry over a job. So I just pretended. I pretended that the job didnât affect me anymore, that I was fine every time I came home. I pretended to be okay when in reality I jusâ wanted to fuckinâ scream and cry.â He turns his head to the side again as more tears silently cascade down his beautiful face.Â
âHey, look at me,â Your voice is soft, as if youâre trying not to scare an already frightened animal. âI can promise you that you never have to pretend with me.â You wipe his tears with your thumb, kissing his cheek softly as you continue to gently rub his back.Â
âYâdonât know how much that means to me, darlinâ. Itâs not easy carryinâ the weight of this job on my shoulders alone. I donât want to burden you with any of itââ
âHey, none of that alright? Youâre not burdening me. I canât even imagine the terrible things youâve seen and endured while on the job. I swear to you that Iâm here to listen. Or just be a shoulder to lay on. We donât even need to talk if you donât want to, but just know that option is always there.âÂ
He turns his head to kiss your temple, squeezing his eyes shut before leaning his head back onto your shoulder.Â
The âLâ word rolled around in your mind for a split second. A month and a half ago, it wouldâve scared you. But now, being here with Joel, it just seemed so normal and comfortable. He may have felt the same too, you think. Maybe it was too early to tell.Â
-
You wish it was a morning where you and Joel could laze around and relax. Waking up beside him gave you a sense of comfort you hadnât experienced in so long. You secretly study his face as he sleeps: tan skin glowing from the morning sunlight, eyelashes fanned over his cheeks, messy curls resting haphazardly over his forehead, and plump lips parted as he emits soft snores.Â
Heâs so handsome.Â
You couldnât help but bring your hand out to trace his face with your fingertips, leaning forward to gently kiss his cheek.Â
His eyebrows scrunch together as he slowly begins to wake from his slumber, hands shooting up to rub over his face. His eyes find yours when he drops his hands from his face, a grin curling onto his lips.Â
âMorninâ baby.â His voice was deep and raspy, still full of sleep. It made something stir deep down inside of you.Â
âMorning, handsome.â You kiss the tip of his nose before sitting up to get out of bed, but Joel pulls you back by your wrist and maneuvers you so youâre laying on top of him.Â
You laugh as he wraps his arms around you securely, making sure you canât move an inch or wiggle away.Â
âWe gotta get up and get going, Joel.âÂ
He groans loudly, the sound vibrating his whole body and yours. âFive more minutes.â His muffled voice says from underneath you.Â
âUh uh, cowboy. Câmon, Iâll make you a thermos of coffee.â You tap his stomach twice before he releases you to stand on your feet. You make your way into the kitchen, fighting the urge to look back at Joel, because you knew youâd give him more than five minutes if you did.Â
You start up the coffee pot and lean against the counter, rubbing the sleep from your eyes. Joel emerges in the kitchen shortly after, leaning against the wall as he admires you in your sleepy state.Â
âWhat?â You ask, cocking an eyebrow up at him.Â
âNothinâ baby.â He smiles before coming into the kitchen, lifting you up on the counter and slotting himself between your legs.Â
âMmmhm.â You say, putting your hands on his warm chest. You feel his heartbeat beneath your fingertips and notice itâs slightly elevated, which you canât help but smile at.Â
Joel leans in to you and kisses your neck, and you canât help but loll your head to the side to give him better access. His lips graze over your pulse point and you instinctively grip onto his biceps, trying your hardest to suppress a moan.Â
âJoelââÂ
âHm? What is it, pretty girl?âÂ
âIf you keep doing that, weâre neverâfuckâ never gonna leave in time.â He pokes his tongue out and drags it down your jugular, kissing the base of your neck before lightly nibbling on your soft flesh.Â
âDoinâ what, baby?â He teases, smirking against you.Â
âYou know what, cowboy,â And before he could retort, the coffee maker beeps to indicate Joelâs coffee was done. âSaved by the bell.â You mumble, gently separating yourself from Joel. His honey brown gaze bores into yours as he chuckles at your flustered state before sliding his phone out of his pocket.Â
He types in the address to the hotel the wedding party was staying at. Joel meticulously calculates the stops you may need to make along the way before looking at you again.Â
âShould take us about an hour and a half to get there. Two hours if thereâs heavy traffic.âÂ
âItâs not too late to back out, you know.âÂ
ââN why would I do that, darlinâ?âÂ
âTo save yourself from the chaos that the weekend will bring. I can tell my family you had to work instead. Nobody can get mad at a firefighter for working.âÂ
Joel tosses his head back as he gutturally laughs, shoulders shaking. The whole thing was a little ridiculous, but you know how your family is, and you were ultimately just looking out for him.Â
His gaze meets yours, a glint of adoration in his eyes as he leans forward. You canât help the stupid grin that curls onto your lips as he gently nudges your body closer to his, finally slotting his lips with yours.Â
Youâll never get tired of those butterflies that rumble rambunctiously in your tummy every time you kiss him.Â
He leans back a little, and with his irresistible charm, winks at you before he huffs another small laugh. âWouldnât dream of it, baby.âÂ
You hop off the counter and pat his abdomen adoringly before flashing him a grin. âWell then, cowboy, let's get to it.â
-
The drive wasnât as bad as youâd thought it would be, pulling up to the hotel around one in the afternoon. Joel unloads your luggage from the bed of his truck and you wrap your arm around his bicep, walking toward the lobby after he locks up. It was a fancy hotel located right next to the Riverwalk with a huge ballroom for the reception. You had to hand it to your sister and Josh; this place was absolutely beautiful.Â
You walked up to the reception desk with Joel in tow, and the spunky brunette smiled as you approached her.Â
âHi, weâre here for the Martinez wedding.âÂ
âFirst name?â The receptionist asks, typing something into her computer. You give her your first name and she pulls two keys out of a cardholder, handing it over to you.Â
âAh, sister of the bride! How exciting. You two will be on the seventh floor, third room on the right after you get out of the elevator. Enjoy your stay.âÂ
âThank you so much.â You say, taking the card keys from her before you step away from the desk. You and Joel were heading towards the elevator when you heard a familiar voice call your name, and you turned around to see your brothers.Â
Panic overtook your body for a few seconds, glancing at Joel who gave you a small smile. How was he always so calm?Â
âThought you could sneak past us without saying hi?â Cole says with a shit-eating grin, eyeing Joel as he comes up to you to give you a hug.Â
âYou ainât slick, Shadow.â Andrew says, hugging you after Cole.Â
âGod, Andy, seriously? That nickname?â
âWhat, you afraid weâre gonna embarrass you in front of your boyfriend that youâve been hiding from us?â Cole jerks his head toward Joel, who shifts on his weight as he lets go of his suitcase.Â
âShut up, Cole,â You roll your eyes, huffing a laugh. âJoel, these are my idiot brothers Andrew and Cole. Andy, Cole, this is my boyfriend Joel.â You introduce them, and Joel puts on his best smile before extending his hand.Â
âNice to meet you both.â He says, and itâs comical how both of your brothers try to come off as intimidating toward Joel. Joel keeps a calm demeanor anyhow; his steady, charming smile never wavering.Â
âUh huh. Nice to meet you too. Hey, let us buy you a drink, yeah?â Andrew says, jerking his head toward the bar located at the far end of the lobby. Joel glances at you as you give him a tight-lipped smile, wrapping your hand around his bicep once more. You turn back to your brothers before sighing.Â
âLet us put our bags up in our room first before I let you harass him. Jesus.â You half-joke, and Cole claps Joel on the shoulder.Â
âWhat makes you think weâre gonna harass him, Shadow? Weâre just looking out for ya.âÂ
âThatâs what Iâm afraid of. Now please let go of his shoulder.â You roll your eyes and tug on Joelâs arm gently, coaxing him to follow you to the elevators.Â
âFine. See you down here in a few.âÂ
You wave your brothers off before getting into the elevator, hitting the seventh floor button.Â
âJesus, Joel, Iâm so sorry. Thought weâd get a chance to fucking breathe before my brothers started literally harassing you.âÂ
He laughs and shakes his head, giving your temple a kiss. âAinât nothinâ to worry about, baby. Theyâre just beinâ protective. I get it.âÂ
âJust⊠take anything they might say with a grain of salt.âÂ
He chuckles and nods as the elevator dings and the door opens to the seventh floor. You stop in front of your room and open the door, gasping at how beautiful it is. The king bed in the middle looks absolutely heavenly, and your mind canât help the image flashing in your mind of you and Joel getting tangled in those very sheets. Heat rushes to your face at the thought, and you walk over to the window to distract yourself. The gleaming summer sun reflects on the calm waters below at the Riverwalk, giving it a mesmerizing gleam.Â
Joel wraps his arms around your waist from behind and kisses your shoulder. âBeautiful,â He murmurs, but unbeknownst to you, he wasnât talking about the water below.Â
âWe should go back down so my brothers donât give you more shit than youâre probably going to get.â You grimace at the thought of what theyâre going to say to him.Â
Joel chuckles and playfully shakes you before loosening his grasp on your midsection.Â
âJust promise me you wonât run for the hills if they get to be too much. Iâll put them in their place.â You offer, and Joel kisses your forehead.Â
âIâd only run if you were right by my side, baby.âÂ
-
Joel didnât know what to expect from your brothers. He could feel the nerves buzzing off of you as you both made your way back to the elevator to go down to the lobby again, and he wanted nothing more than to ease your erratic nerves.Â
He knew from the very beginning that heâd be in the long haul of things with you, so he knew facing your family at some point was going to happen. Absolutely nothing your brothers say or do will make him ârun for the hillsâ, as youâd put it.Â
Joel thought the look you tossed his way when the elevator doors opened to the lobby was adorable. He could tell that you wanted this to go well, and who was he to let you down?Â
Joel gave your hand a squeeze as you both made your way up to your brothers again.Â
âJoel, how âbout that drink.â Andrew says, head jerking toward the bar on the opposite end of the lobby.Â
âSure.â He says, trying to keep his cool. He wondered briefly if this was the slight fear you mightâve felt when you met Sarah.Â
âIâm gonna go find mom and Em.â You say, giving Joel a kiss on the cheek. He watches you walk out before your brothers tug him along to the bar area, ordering a round of Lone Star.Â
âSo Iâm a real cut-to-the-chase type guy,â Andrew starts, settling into the barstool next to Joel. Joel nods and sits up straight before taking a swig of his beer to ease his nerves. âIâm sure youâre aware of our sisterâs past relationship. Whoâs to say you wonât hurt her like that asshole did?âÂ
Joel was taken aback at Andrewâs bluntness, but his expression never wavered or gave anything away. âI know what itâs like to be hurt in a way that ya canât ever forget about. The mother of my child left when my baby girl was only a year old. Said she couldnât handle beinâ a parent nâ left me to fend for myself. Beinâ hurt like that,â Joel shakes his head and looks down, âIt ainât right. I would never want anyone to feel the way I felt when she walked out the door. I know your sisterâs situation is a bit different, but my feelings toward it are all the same. I like your sister a whole lot nâ the last thing on Godâs green Earth Iâd ever wanna do is hurt âer.âÂ
Andrew nods, weighing Joelâs answer in his head. Joel was telling the truth. Heâd never want to hurt you. You deserve to be happy, and he knows you can do that completely on your own, but he loves to be the reason behind it. He loves seeing you smile knowing heâs the reason itâs there in the first place.Â
âWhat do you do for work?â Cole changed the subject, and Joel shifts his gaze to the younger brother.Â
âIâm a firefighter for the city of Austin.âÂ
âIâll be damned. Shadow always said she loved a man in uniform,â Cole teased, and the three men chuckled in unison.Â
âHow come yâall call her Shadow? Sheâs never told me anythinâ about that story.â Joel says, and the brothers canât help but smile at the opportunity to tease their little sister.
âShe was afraid of her shadow when she was younger, maybe around like two or three years old. Weâd always tease her about it and the nickname just stuck.âÂ
ââS actually really funny.â Joel said, thinking about how heâd be able to tease you later on with the newfound information.Â
âSo how did you meet our sister? She hasnât told us a damn thing about you.â Cole grimaces, taking a sip of his beer.Â
âI met her at a local coffee shop near her apartment. She actually made the first move,â Joel recalls, and he canât help but smile at the memory. âShe paid for my coffee.âÂ
âThatâs pretty out of character for her. Sheâs usually pretty shy.â Andrew said.Â
âBelieve me, I was surprised. She was so sweet⊠after I caught her checkinâ me out. I was in uniform.â Joel laughs, and the brothers join in with him.Â
âTold ya she loves a man in uniform.â Cole nudges Joel.Â
âYou said youâre a firefighter,â Andrew repeats aloud, wheels turning in his head. âShit, the accident,â He says, looking at Joel. Joel nods, not quite sure where he was going with this.Â
âWasnât pretty. Got the call and I saw her carââ
âWait, so you were on the scene? Youâre telling me youâre the one who got our sister out of her car?â Andrew was bewildered, blinking rapidly in complete disbelief.Â
Joel furrowed his brows and looked down at his knotted hands, reliving that moment in his head.Â
âYeah. Iâd only known her for hours at that point, but all I knew was that I needed to get her out of there. Scared the hell outta me.âÂ
âUnbelievable. Canât believe she left out that huge detail,â Cole chuckles and shakes his head, but looks up at Joel in all seriousness. âThank you for saving her.âÂ
Joel gives them both a soft smile. âIâd save her all over again in a heartbeat.âÂ
âYouâre a damn hero, man. To our sister and to Austin.âÂ
Joel never knew how to accept compliments that well, let alone the hero compliments. He just saw it as doing his job and getting to help those in need.Â
âWell, cheers to you. We can both tell youâre an honest man and anyone whoâs willing to literallyâand figuratively, I guessâsave our sister is a man who has our utmost respect.â Andrew says, holding his beer bottle up in the air.Â
Cole raised his bottle and Joel followed suit, an echo of âcheersâ being thrown around. Joelâs nerves dissolved like cotton candy in water, relief flooding through his bones that your brothers approved of him. He knew meeting your dad was going to be an even bigger deal, so he was holding onto hope that it would go just as well.Â
-
âSo when am I meeting this Joel of yours?â Your mom says, perching her glasses on the bridge of her nose as she took a sip of her margarita. You found her and Emily poolside as they sipped their drinks while talking about last minute wedding details.Â
âHeâs at the bar in the lobby getting harassed by Andy and Cole.â You roll your eyes, and Emily laughs.Â
âHeâs a good man. Iâm sure theyâre all buddy-buddy now. Men are simple when it comes to meeting new people.â Emily waves her hand dismissively, easing your nerves a little.Â
âWhereâs dad?â You ask, looking between Emily and your mom.Â
Your mom scoffs, âHeâs upstairs taking a nap. Told him he wouldnât be tired tonight but he seemed to think otherwise.âÂ
âHeâs probably overwhelmed with all the wedding stuff.â You offer with a shrug, and your mom huffs.Â
âHe isnât the one planning the damn thing.âÂ
âThere you guys are!â Cole calls out to you three, Andrew and Joel in tow. Your eyes lock on Joelâs gaze and youâre relieved to see he made it out of the interrogation unscathed.Â
He makes his way over to you, leaning down to give you a chaste kiss.Â
âSo you must be Joel.â Your mom says, eyes alight at the exchange you and Joel had.Â
âI am. Itâs so great to meet you, Mrs.ââ
Your mom waves her hand to dismiss his formalities. âOh, none of that. Just call me Alexandria. Itâs nice to finally meet the man whoâs been making my youngest daughter so happy.â She grins up at him, and it was easy to clock the blush that spreads over his tan cheeks.Â
âI can argue that she makes me the happiest Iâve ever been.â He looks down at you and shoots you a wink, and you canât help but roll your eyes playfully.Â
Everyone got into chatting about the rehearsal dinner and the bar of choice afterwards, scampering off to their respective rooms.Â
It only took a couple of hours for everyone to get ready and head down to the lobby, being shuffled into the courtyard by hotel staff. Sage green and cream decorations adorned the spacious place with rows of chairs neatly lined up for the big day tomorrow. The gazebo at the end of the walkway was strewn with fairy lights that gave a soft glow that added to to romantic ambience.Â
For a split second, you couldnât help but let your mind wander to what your future wedding would look like⊠with Joel. You may have been presumptuous in thinking such a thing, but you truly felt deep down that this was the man you were meant to marry.Â
The wedding coordinator lined all of the bridesmaids and groomsmen up, and you took your respectable place next to Karina who was your sisterâs best friend and maid of honor.Â
After two full run-throughs of the ceremony and placement adjustments, the wedding coordinator took everyone to the ballroom where the reception was being held.
It wasnât long before everyone finished their dinners, polite conversation being held as the night went on.Â
âSo youâre the Joel everyoneâs been buzzing about.â Your dad says, and you give him a stern look to say go easy on him. Not that Joel couldnât handle himself, but because your dad could get a little out of hand at times.Â
âYes sir, thatâs me.â He says, grabbing your hand underneath the table to give it a squeeze.Â
âI hear youâre a firefighter. Good man.â Your dad nods in approval, and proceeds to ask Joel about some calls heâs gotten in the past. Everyone at the table was listening intently to him, curious as to what life as a firefighter is really like.Â
Your gaze roams to your mom, whoâs already looking between you and Joel with a sparkle in her eye youâd never seen before. She gives you a wink and sips her wine, turning her attention back to Joel.Â
It seems his Southern charm and calm demeanor had won every single one of your family members over, and relief floods through your body at that. Thatâs all you wanted, and you couldnât have been happier to see it become a reality.Â
-
After dinner, Josh and Emily told everyone that they werenât having a âtraditionalâ bachelor and bachelorette party. Instead, they wanted to go to a bar together and have a few drinks with everyone as one last celebration before they both say I do.Â
It wasnât surprising to you. Your sister had always been the homebody type and Josh was right there with her. You thought it was romantic in a sense, knowing that they really didnât need anything big or to spend time apart before their big day.Â
The bar was a few buildings down from the hotel, with a huge dance floor in the middle and patrons singing along to the mix of music that was playing as they drank.Â
Your dad ordered a round of shots for everybody, making a toast to Josh and Emily.Â
âTo the bride and groom to be.â Your dad says, and everyone clinks their glasses together before throwing back their liquor.Â
You shudder at the taste, setting the cup down onto the sticky bartop.Â
âMay I have this dance?â Joel asks you, holding his hand out for you to take. You grin and grab his hand, grip steady as he leads you out to the dance floor.Â
You steadily sway to the song as you lean your head on Joelâs shoulder, letting him guide you to the beat. You glance up to see your family members have joined you both on the dance floor, and you smile in content as you squeeze Joelâs hand. He kisses your head before separating you, spinning you around so your back is against his front.Â
He rocks you slowly, resting his chin on your shoulder before kissing your cheek.Â
ââM real happy you let me tag along this weekend, sweetheart.â Joel says, and you turn your head toward him and quirk an eyebrow.Â
âYeah? And whyâs that?âÂ
ââS nice to get out of Austin every once in a while. Your family is real invitinâ, too.âÂ
âBefore or after they interrogated you?â You ask with a smirk, and he laughs before spinning you again so youâre face-to-face.Â
âMostly after.â He confesses with a softness to his voice. You study his features unashamedly, the soft smile he has on his lips making your heart skip a beat as he looks at you with half-lidded eyes.Â
Thereâs a certainty behind them that you canât exactly pinpoint, but it made your whole body feel warm and fuzzy inside and you honest to god never wanted to forget the feeling. Joel is the only man whoâs made you feel things youâve never felt. Heâs the only man whoâs ever kept you on your toes yet has this overwhelming sense of comfort to him that just makes you want to give it all to him.Â
And by the way he was looking back at you, youâd bet his thoughts are similar to yours.Â
âYou two are so in love it makes me sick.â Andrew sidles up beside you, nudging you in your ribs.Â
Your eyes go wide and you look at your brother in panic, pleading him to shut the fuck up before you kill him with your bare hands.Â
âFuck off, Andy.â You roll your eyes, trying to play it cool. You didnât deny the painfully obvious fact, though. You didnât want to deny it.Â
Was it fast? Yes. But you couldnât help how you felt. You were tired of running from something that was great for you. You were tired of running from solidity and peace and patience and love, all of which Joel gave you without having to say a single word.Â
And then you realizedâJoel never denied it either. He didnât deny it when your brotherâs loud mouth said that sacred word. He didnât deny it when you looked at him again, that familiar look in his eyes returning as he just smiled at you, seemingly content in every possible way.Â
Before you could say anything, Cole comes up to you while waving a crisp twenty dollar bill in your face.Â
âBetcha one Jackson that you canât ride that bull over there and stay on for more than a minute.â Heâs got a mischievous glint in his eyes, and youâd take any opportunity to prove your brother wrong.Â
âOh, I will. After this song though,â You grin at Joel as Boot Scootinâ Boogie plays over the speakers. âCâmon cowboy, I wanna show off my new moves.âÂ
Joel easily obliges as he takes you deeper onto the dance floor. Youâre slotted in a mix of a sweaty and drunken crowd, too far gone to care if theyâre too off-beat or embarrassing themselves.Â
You follow Joelâs lead and you two easily end up in sync with one another, like itâs the most natural thing in the world. Somewhere between the spin in the chorus and the two-step move heâd taught you, you catch your family members staring at the two of you. Your mom whispers something to your sister, and you hope to god she didnât change her opinion of him or something after seeing you two dancing like this.Â
Emily knows you better than the back of her fucking hand, though, and she instantly reassures you with a smile and thumbs up before panic settles into your bones.Â
Although it seems everyone in your immediate family approves of Joel, it would devastate you if they changed their minds about him for whatever reason. He wasnât your ex. They at least knew that much. As much as you loved them, they were overbearing sometimes when it came to protecting you after whatâd happened with Christian. You didnât need that to drive a wedge between you and Joel, no matter how much of a forewarning you give him.Â
The song ends and reality trickles back around you, as Joel spins you into him, giving you a chaste kiss. Your eyes flutter open after you pull away in the slightest, and there it is â that look â unwavering, and clear as day in his eyes.Â
âGo show âem how you ride it.â He remarks, shooting you a wink. Your face heats at his obvious innuendo, and he canât help the sly smirk that grows on his lips.Â
Without another word, he releases you from his grasp and urges you toward your brother, still waving the twenty in his hand around like a flag.Â
You roll your eyes at him and climb up onto the mechanical bull, the DJ timing you into when the machine will start to move.Â
It was slow at first, and you easily found a rhythm to keep steady on its back. It started to jerk around and spin faster, and your thighs burned as you clenched onto the sides for dear life. You wanted to give a little show though, so you placed your hands behind your back and looked up at your brother with a wicked grin.Â
His face deflated as he knew heâd been beaten. Your eyes flicker to Joel and you want to laugh at his expressionâit seemed to be a cross between lust, admiration and astonishment.Â
Oh, cowboy. You have no idea what youâre in for.Â
The DJ announces your victory and the patrons of the bar cheer you on as you hop off of the bull. You walk up to Cole and snatch the twenty bucks from his hand before leaning into Joel, pressing a kiss to his cheek.Â
âWanna go back to the hotel room? Iâm beat.â You ask Joel, and he nods. You say goodnight to your family and other members of the wedding party before you both head back in a comfortable silence.Â
Exhaustion settles in your bones as you fall into step side-by-side, and Joel pulls you into him as you walk into the lobby of the hotel. You make your way onto the elevators and Joel presses the button of your floor, looking at you with a softness in his eyes as he settles his hand on your shoulder.Â
âThank you again for doing this whole wedding fiasco with me.â You say, voice full of exhaustion. He shoots you a soft smile and pulls you in, wrapping his arms around you securely. You mirror his actions as you look at him, an adoring gaze sparkling in his eyes. He leans in and kisses your forehead, giving your body a small squeeze.Â
âOf course, darlinâ.âÂ
You went to bed that night with Joelâs arm wrapped around you and a mind of racing thoughts, all consumed by that feeling againâthe terrifying, wonderful feeling that kept playing in your mind as if it was the most obvious conclusion youâve ever come to.Â
-
The next morning was a blur. You got up early, trying not to disturb Joel because he looked so peaceful in his sleep. It was chaos amongst the bridal party with everyone getting ready and your sister revealing her final look to the girls. Tears sprang in your eyes as you saw her with the biggest smile on her face, unwavering as she twirled around in her dress that fit like a glove.Â
âEmi, you look so beautiful. Josh is going to lose it when he sees you.â You say, sniffling as she gives you a tight hug.Â
âI love you sis. Thank you for being a part of my big day.â She says, rubbing your back before pulling apart from you. You grin at her and blow her a kiss, turning when you feel your mom slightly nudge you.Â
âSpeaking of losing it, Joelâs gonna be head over heels seeing you in this dress,â Your mom says, âWonder what heâll be like when itâs your guysâ wedding and he sees you in a bridal gown.â
âMom,â You stop her, but you canât help the way your heart stutters at the thought of marriage with him. âPlease donât.â
Way too fucking soon. Right?
Your mom throws her hands up in defense, giving you a knowing look.Â
âThat man is in love with you, baby. He looks at you like youâre the sun, moon and stars.âÂ
That feeling tugged at you once again. You began to internally panic, but luckily the bridal party got called to an area in the hotel to take pictures. You needed a distraction, because knowing you and your mind, youâd unintentionally start self-sabotaging your relationship with Joel.Â
Fuck, your ex really did a number on you.Â
The day seemed to run by in a blur. Watching your sister say âI doâ to the love of her life made you glance over at Joel in the crowd, and to your surprise, his focus was already on you.Â
There was this undeniably soft look in his eyes that said a million words without him having to utter a single one. He winks at you with a small smile and you mirror his grin, heading back down the aisle after Emily and Josh made their way down.Â
A few hours later it was well into the reception, and Joel offered you his hand so you could slow dance with each other.Â
âYou know this thing drives me crazy, right?â You say, tapping the brim of his Stetson. He looked at you with a smirk, raising his eyebrows.Â
âReally? Couldnât tell.â Sarcasm dripped from his voice and you rolled your eyes as you huffed a laugh. He was wearing an emerald green button down with black slacks and black shoes, and his black cowboy hat tied the whole look together. Heâd been getting stares all night by various family members and friends from both sides of the parties.Â
You thought jealousy wouldâve brewed its way into you, sinking her claws into your fleshâbut it was the complete opposite. Pride blooms in your chest as you slow dance with this handsome manâyour handsome man.Â
âYou look absolutely breathtakinâ tonight though, baby.â Joel whispers in your ear as you lean your head on his shoulder, taking in his addicting scent.Â
You smile against him and bring your arm up over his other shoulder, gently wrapping your fingers around the base of his neck. Your index finger twirls the curls peeking out of the bottom of his hat absentmindedly, swaying with him with total ease.Â
âI can say the same for you.â You murmur, and he squeezes your waist softly.Â
âYeah?âÂ
You lift your head off of his shoulder to meet his gaze, light and playful. A glint of mischief flashes in his eyes and you bite your lip in anticipation, the bubbling arousal having never left you since the previous night.Â
You nod, hesitating for a second to find the right words. You knew you wanted to take the next step with him and finally go all the way without being interrupted. That is, if heâd have you.Â
âIâd love to show you.â You whisper as the song ends. An upbeat tune plays immediately after, everyone crowding on the dance floor. It was the perfect time to make an escape.Â
He links his fingers with yours, leaning forward to kiss you. You canât help but smile as his lips press to yours, and you canât help yourselfâyou take the hat off of his head mid-kiss, plopping it onto yours. He separates himself from you with a soft smile and a daring glint in his gaze.Â
He tsked at you teasingly, adjusting the hat to sit straight onto your head.Â
âWhat was that about the âCowboy Hat Ruleâ again?â You feign innocence, and he canât help but laugh at your antics, ultimately deciding to play along.Â
âHow âbout I show you rather than tell you?â He says, and thatâs all you need to gently tug him away from the crowd and toward the lobby. You make your way to the elevators, nerves buzzing through your veins at the prospect of whatâs to happen.Â
After what feels like forever, the elevator doors finally open and you both step inside. The doors close after Joel hits the seventh floor button, and the tension radiating off of both of you in such a confined space was nearly unbearable.Â
Joel takes his hat off of your head and gently pushes you against the elevator wall, crowding you with his broad body. Your heart is beating a million miles a minute as you stare at him, gaze never wavering.Â
You open your mouth to say something, but Joel crashes his lips to yours in fervor. You moan into the kiss as you tangle your hands through his curls, tugging on the base of them.Â
His free hand finds your hip and squeezes, rutting his hips into yours. You can feel his bulge through his slacks, and you canât help but whimper into the intense kiss as one hand travels down his back.Â
Before you can touch him any further, the elevator dings and he separates from you, locking eyes with an elderly couple.Â
The woman has a knowing smile on her face and sighs, âOh, to be young and in love.â Joel takes your hand and leads you out of the elevator and to your shared room, fumbling with the key. It almost calms you in a way to know you arenât the only one filled with nerves, anxious about finally being able to have this time to yourselves.Â
Joel tossed the keycard onto the side table when he finally got it open, putting his hand on your lower back to guide you into the room. The soft glow of the lamp illuminates his handsome features as he stares at you admirably, tossing his Stetson onto a chair next to the bed without looking.Â
Joel steps closer to you, grabbing your hips gently before leaving a trail of kisses from your forehead, nose, cheek, and finally, your lips. The kiss was softer this timeâfull of emotion, saying a thousand words with one simple gesture.Â
His hands skate up your back and to the zipper of your dress, parting his lips from yours as he looks into your eyes.Â
âCan I?â His voice is soft but hopeful, and you instantly nod. He drags the zipper down your back with ease, slowly removing the straps from your shoulders. The dress pools to your feet below you, and youâre left in a lacy nude and black bra with black panties. Joelâs eyes rake over your body hungrily, hands twitching at his sides.Â
âYouâre so beautiful, baby.âÂ
You canât help but feel shy for a second, but Joel wasnât having any of that. He grips your chin between his thumb and forefinger, kissing your lips a few times before he nods his head to the bed.Â
âOn the bed, baby. Spread your legs for me.â His deep, commanding tone sent a shiver down your spine. You didnât know what to expect, but it definitely wasnât this.Â
You do as youâre told, settling your head onto the plush pillows as you let your legs fall open. Joel moves to untuck his green shirt. He unbuttons the shirt slowly, never breaking eye contact with you. You bite your lip teasingly as you watch him undress, and his thick, tan torso comes into sight.Â
âFuck, youâre so sexy, you know that?â You say, but it nearly sounds like a whine. Joel flashes you a smirk before climbing onto the bed, slotting himself between your legs. Your arms grip his shoulders before grabbing the green material, sliding it off of his arms completely before tossing it onto the floor for him. You kiss his shoulder and neck, hands moving up to tangle themselves in his curls once again.Â
He ruts his hips into you, and the pressure of his bulge catches perfectly onto your aching clit. You moan his name softly, moving one hand down to gently palm him through his slacks. Â
âCanât believe we finally get to do this without any interruptions.â Joel chuckles, moving down to kiss your neck.Â
âLetâs not hold our breaths.â You say teasingly, fingers moving to unbutton and unzip his slacks. He allows it, not stopping you from eagerly undressing the rest of him.Â
He separates himself from you, sliding the slacks down his legs before moving down the bed, kissing your body as he goes. His tongue traces lines down your thighs, dangerously close to your aching core, before he kisses your skin. He continues the assault of kisses until his mouth is hovering over the only thing that separates your most intimate part from him and his line of sight. He kisses the lace fabric once, then pokes his tongue out to drag the strong muscle from your entrance to your clit.Â
You canât hold back your moans anymore. You need him so bad.Â
Your body was nearly shaking from the buzz of anticipation coursing through your veins, aching to have his hands and mouth all over you.Â
He finally hooks his fingers into the side of your panties, tapping your hips twice to silently instruct you to lift them. You comply once more, and Joel drags the lace material down your legs.Â
He comes back up to you, kissing your lips once before settling his face between your legs again.Â
You feel so exposed and almost embarrassed, but the carnal need for this man outweighs the shyness a thousand times over.Â
âSo perfect, baby. So goddamn perfect. âN all mine.â He says, looking up at you before separating your glistening folds with his middle and forefinger. You gasp and whine his name as he just stares at you, mesmerized by the way you squirm under his touch.Â
You try to beg and plead him to do anything, but the words wonât come out.Â
He seems to have decided heâs teased you enough, because the next thing you know, his tongue licks a long stripe up from your entrance, through your folds, and up to your clit. Your moans only spur him on as he solely focuses on you, eating your pussy like a starved man.Â
Nobody has ever turned you on the way Joel Miller has, and you cannot for the life of you believe this man is yours. Heâs yours, and heâs here, very present and very meticulous when it comes to pleasing you with that beautiful mouth of his.Â
Joel moves his tongue down and prods into your entrance, fucking you with the muscle. Your back arches off of the mattress and he has to use both of his hands to hold your hips down, locking his fingers down into your flesh.Â
âFuck, Joelââ You squeak out as his tongue moves up to your clit, circling it a few times before sucking it into his mouth gently. The pressure is just right, and your brain is getting fuzzyâyou knew you werenât going to last much longer.Â
Joel takes one of his hands away from your stomach before separating his mouth from you, coating his digits in your slick. He sends a wicked smirk your way before going down again, and this time, his middle and ring finger enter you.Â
It stings so good, mainly because you havenât had this in a long time. He pumps his fingers in and out of you at an expert pace, curling them up to hit that sweet spongy spot.Â
You immediately crumble. Your hips are writhing wildly beneath his half-soaked face as you cry out his name over and over again. Youâre gushing all over his fingers, desperately gripping onto the soft comforter beneath you as you ride out your intense orgasm.Â
âAtta girl,â Joel breathes, mesmerized by the way you clench around nothing after he removes his fingers from you. âTaste so fuckinâ good, darlinâ.âÂ
He moves up to kiss you, and you can immediately taste your slick arousal on his lips and tongue. You hum into the kiss as you palm him through his boxers, tugging on the band as you separate from him. He knocks his forehead against yours gently before sliding the material down his legs, now completely bare for you.Â
His hand moves to the clasp of your bra and unhooks it easily, breasts spilling out as he tosses the material on the floor with the rest of the clothes.Â
He looks down at you with a soft smile, and you canât help but mirror his actions. Itâs pure bliss and you selfishly never want this to end. His hand travels down your body and in between your legs, swirling the tip of his middle finger through your arousal. You gasp at the featherlight touch, clenching around nothing as he never breaks eye contact with you.Â
You decide to return the favor, licking your hand before skimming your fingers over his torso before looking down to see them slide through the dark hairs that appear below his navel. You take in the sight of his cock; itâs girthy and the perfect length. You just know itâll feel divine. You thumb the pre-come leaking from his tip, popping your finger into your mouth.Â
You moan at the slightly salty taste, moving your hand back down to finally grip him with care. He feels heavy in your palm, warm and pulsating and fucking desperate for you to start rythmically moving your hand. You twist your wrist and start to pump him, and a guttural groan rumbles from the confines of his chest.Â
âFuck, babyâyeah, just like that. So good.â He groans softly, brows furrowing as he leans down to kiss you.Â
And you spend the next few minutes like thatâmaking out with Joel while he teases your swollen clit, fingers briefly delving into your entrance before moving back out, and your hand slowly twisting up and down his silky flesh.Â
Something about this was so sweet to you, albeit the act being promiscuous. You were taking your time with each other, savoring every moment you have now. God knows when youâll be able to do this in peace again once you get back to Austin.Â
Joelâs body tenses for a second before he pushes your hand away, chuckling in defeat.Â
âDonât wanna come yet, sweetheart.â
You nod in understanding and he slips his fingers away from your dripping heat, bringing them up to your mouth. You eagerly suck on his fingers, staring up at him in a way to say I want you. Iâm ready to have youâif youâll have me.Â
Joel climbs on top of you once more, kissing your forehead. He nudges his nose against yours before looking at you again.Â
âWait, I didnât bring any protection.â His shoulders deflate at the realization, and you canât help but softly laugh.Â
âI have an IUD, Joel. Only if youâre comfortable with going through with this, Iâm right there with you.â You reassure him.Â
He looks concerned for a second, hesitating as if his mind is running a million miles a minute.Â
âYou sure about this, baby?â He asks, cupping your cheek in his hand before kissing your nose. You nod with no hesitation.Â
âAbsolutely sure, Joel. Iâm yours.â You whisper, and he canât help the grin that spreads across his face before he leans down to kiss you. He swipes the head of his cock through your folds, stopping at your entrance.Â
He separates his lips from yours once more, âTell me to stop if itâs too much, okay?â He says, and you nod. He hums in content, pushing himself into you slowly.Â
You gasp at the stinging feeling, fingertips digging into the back of his shoulders.Â
âThere you go baby, that's it. Doinâ so well, pretty girl.â He praises, kissing your lips repeatedly as he reaches the hilt.Â
The feeling is cosmic. The stretch is absolutely delicious. You whisper his name to him, threading your fingers through his hair once more in desperation as your meek voice finally found its way aloud.Â
âMove, Joel. Please.âÂ
And he does. He starts off slow, rocking his hips into yours. The slide of his velvety length in and out of you is otherworldly.Â
Your eyes rolled to the back of your head as he held onto the back of your neck, picking up his pace. He leans down to capture one of your breasts in his mouth, swirling his tongue expertly around your pert nipple as he continues rocking his hips into yours.Â
Your moans are increasingly louder, not exactly giving a fuck who can hear you anymore. Your mind was solely consumed about the man ravishing your body in such a way that had you seeing stars.Â
The weight of his body on yours, his soft groans, the heavy feeling of his cock, his scent, his curlsâeverything about him was all-consuming, and you loved it.Â
âSo pretty, baby. Feel so fuckinâ good. All mine.â Joel babbles, dropping his forehead onto your shoulder. You try to grind your hips in sync with his expert thrusts, creating an almost unbearably pleasurable friction.Â
Your hands fly to his back and you scratch down his skin, head flying back onto the pillows as you arch your back into him.Â
âJoel, fuck, Iâm so close.â You cry, eyes squeezing shut as the familiar flame burns bright within your core.Â
âMe too, baby, fuckâwhereâwhere do you want me?â He asks, chest heaving as his thrusts become impossibly faster.Â
âIn me, Joel. Please.â Your plea is breathy and desperate, and you feel yourself teetering over the edge, devastating euphoria ripping through your body as your cunt convulses around his cock.Â
You bury your face into his shoulder, crying out his name.Â
âFuck, sweet girl, IââÂ
His spend is warm as he comes, buried in you as he groans your name breathlessly. He slumps down onto you, wrapping his arm around your waist as he rolls over on his side, taking you with him. He slips out of you slowly and you both groan at the loss of contact.Â
You nuzzle into him as he kisses your forehead repeatedly, running his hand up and down your spine as you both come down from the high.Â
âFuck, that wasââ You pause, and Joel chuckles.Â
âYeah, it really was.â He agrees, tipping your jaw up so he can kiss you chastely.Â
Your eyes were heavy now, tracing his hairline down to his jaw and to his lips. He kisses your fingers as exhaustion consumes you both. He throws the comforter over your bodies and he gives you one last kiss.Â
âGoodnight, sweet girl,â And if you werenât in such a comatose-like state, you wouldâve heard him softly whisper the words âI love you.âÂ
And if you wouldâve heard those words, you wouldâve said them right back. It mightâve scared the hell out of you, but you could no longer deny the factâ
You were, in fact, in love with Joel Miller, too.Â

âwe got it wrong, and you said you had enough, but what about these feelings Iâve got?â
song rec: I couldnât be more in love by the 1975
warnings: joel miller au, firefighter!joel, reader feels anxious for a bit, feelings, fluff, the miller brothers line dancing (that deserves its own warning bc whew... anyway), the cowboy hat rule!!!, slight smut (joel and reader get touchy and rub up on each other, making out, fingering), no use of y/n.
word count: 5.6k
synopsis: joel invites you over for a barbecue, and you end up unexpectedly meeting sarah while also rekindling with someone from your past. it isnât until you talk about joel aloud to someone who isnât your sister that you realize how deeply you feel for him.
a/n: thank u to @endlessthxxghts for letting me brainstorm about this chapter, and giving me the cowboy hat rule idea... ;)
You were nervous.Â
Nervous as hell.Â
The slightly anxious part of you wanted so desperately to back out of todayâs plans, but you promised Joel youâd be at his place.Â
He was throwing a barbecue at his house and had invited you, and originally, Sarah wasnât supposed to be there. Her friend got sick, so she ended up staying home.Â
You hadnât known Joel for more than a month at this point, and the prospect of meeting his daughter and being introduced as the âwoman heâs been dating but not quite his girlfriendâ terrified you.Â
The last thing you wanted was for Sarah to dislike you, because you couldnât bear the thought of the one person in Joelâs life whoâs opinion mattered most to him not being very fond of you.Â
Joel said sheâd been okay with him dating and only wanted to see him happy, but wasnât it too soon? The last thing you wanted was to wedge yourself between the father-daughter duo.Â
Then again, your feelings for Joel had hit you full-force, and you were in it with himâfor him. Youâd cried to your sister over the phone about being scared of feeling things too fast, but she reassured you: if you know, you know.Â
Nobody has ever made you feel the way Joel makes you feel. Your thoughts mayâve been repetitive with what you felt, but thatâs how you knew you were so sure about him. He was a breath of fresh air in a place full of smoke (no pun intended).Â
You were just worried what Sarah would think. Some might think itâs ridiculous to let a fourteen-year-oldâs opinion matter so much in this circumstance, but that girl was Joelâs whole world. Her opinion of you mattered and could quite literally make or break your relationship with Joel.Â
Youâd be devastated if it didnât work out.Â
You nervously tapped on the steering wheel as you stopped at the last stop sign before turning onto Joelâs street.Â
The quaint neighborhood just outside of the city was chalk-full of cookie cutter homes, looking like it belonged in a friendly neighborhood magazine.Â
Several cars were parked in front of his house, but heâd texted you to park in his driveway beside his truck. It was sweet that he saved that spot for you. Another truck was parked in the driveway as well, and you assumed by default that it was Tommyâs.Â
You grabbed the tray of cookies out of the passenger seat after youâd gotten out and smoothed your sundress to straighten it out. Joel said everyone at the firehouse loved your cookies, especially him and Tommy, so you made them as a surprise to bring for a dessert option today.Â
Nerves coursed through your veins as you made your way up the front steps of his porch, ringing the doorbell. The chime went off in the house with a muffled âIâll get it!â coming from the other side of the door.Â
A few seconds later, the door opened and you were met with a smiling Tommy.Â
âHey there sweetheart, câmon in.â He stepped aside and you thanked him as you entered the house. It was your first time over, so you took a second to take in your surroundings.Â
Many family photos clung neatly to the walls, the leather couches in the living room adorned with quilted blankets, an array of DVDâs scattered around the entertainment center, a well-worn but gorgeous coffee table that sat atop the huge area rug, and the mantle above the fireplace full of trinkets from past trips and a few of Sarahâs soccer trophies.Â
You smiled as you took in the scene before you, really admiring how cozy the home looked. It looked lived in and well loved, and it was all very much Joel. Simple, yet homey and functional.Â
âOoh, are those the same cookies you made for us back at the firehouse?â Tommy motions to the tray in your hand, bringing you back to present time.Â
âThey are. Thought Iâd surprise you and Joel with these again.â You laugh as Tommyâs eyes light up, leading you to the kitchen.Â
âDonât blame me if these are all gone by the end of the night. You should give your recipe to Sarah. She loves to bake.â He groans as he takes a cookie from the tray, biting into it.Â
You have to stifle a laugh at his genuine reaction. You knew your cookies were decent, but not as good as the Miller brothers made them out to be.Â
âSpeaking of, whereâs your counterpart?â You teasingly ask, too shy to go into the backyard and introduce yourself to the array of people chatting and having a good time.Â
You didnât do too well in new settings, so it would take you a little while to warm up.Â
âAh, heâs cookinâ on the grill.â Tommy jerks his head toward the sliding glass door that leads out the backyard, and you follow in his footsteps as you walk up to the main man of the gathering.Â
âOh Jooooeeellll,â Tommy calls out with you in tow, âFound your girlfriend for ya.â He teases, and your heart skips a beat at that. Youâre just dating the man. It wasnât anything official yet, and somehow it just seemed so fitting.Â
Joel didnât correct Tommy either, which you took note of as his gaze averted to yours. A smile immediately spread onto his lips and he pulled you into a hug, kissing your forehead. You took a second to study the contrast of his tan skin against the white linen shirt he was wearing with the first few buttons undone, and the Raybans that sat comfortably on his face. You held in a groan, because fuck he looked so good, once again. Does this man ever look bad?Â
âHey baby.âÂ
Your face heats at the public display of affection, but it dawned on you that he was never trying to hide you or keep you a mystery like you were doing to him.Â
Well, your sister knew about him of course, but everyone else in your family didnât have the faintest idea. They were too overbearing sometimes, and you wanted to be official with Joel before you even said a word to anyone about him.Â
âHi handsome. I brought some cookies but left them inside. Thought I could surprise you again with them.â You grin at him, and he smiles as he pulls you into his side.Â
âIâm gonna let you two lovebirds have a moment to yourselves. Gonna go find my lady and introduce you to her.â Tommy pretends to tip an invisible cowboy hat and sends a wink your way. You huff a laugh and shake your head at his wit.Â
âHe always that charismatic?â You question, and Joel laughs.Â
âItâs even worse when heâs drunk.â He rolls his eyes, and you bury your smile in his bicep. You wrap your arm around his back as you watch him work the grill, flipping hamburgers and chicken that are seasoned to perfection.Â
ââM glad you could make it today, darlinâ. Was startinâ to miss ya real bad. Those twenty four hour shifts kick my ass, I tell ya.â He sighs and gives your body a light, playful shake.Â
âOf course, Joel. I missed you too.â You gave his shoulder a kiss before Tommy called your name to avert your attention to him. Your eyes flit to the woman he has his arm wrapped around, and your eyes widen in shock.Â
âThis is my girlââ
âMaria?â You interrupt Tommy, and her smile spreads wide.Â
âOh my god! Hey you! How long has it been?â Sheâs laughing as you two embrace each other while the Miller brothers give each other a confused glance.Â
âFour years I think? How are you?â You grin, separating from her, holding onto her forearms.Â
âWow I canât believe itâs been that long. Iâm great! Just dealing with this guy over here,â She juts her chin over to Tommy, and his eyes flicker between you two.Â
âSooo you two know each other?â He asks, and you both laugh in unison.Â
âWe used to work together at the same company. Our cubicles were across from each other.â Maria explains, and you nod along.Â
âWell Iâll be damned. Small world!â Tommy grins, patting Joel on the back harshly. Joel glares at his brother and rolls his eyes, turning back to the grill to take the food off and place it into the foil pans next to him.Â
âDad, is the food done yet? You hear a voice call, and you stiffen up immediately. Maria notices your change in demeanor and gives your arm a squeeze of reassurance, which you exchange for a weak smile.Â
A curly-haired girl with bright green eyes comes into view. He turns to look at her and nods, motioning to the foil pans.Â
âLemme fix you up a plate. But first, I want you to meet someone.â He says, and he holds his hand out to you. Maria releases your arm so you can step forward and grab Joelâs hand, and Sarahâs bright green eyes meet your gaze.Â
âThis is the woman Iâve been datinâ. Darlinâ, this is my daughter Sarah.âÂ
You extend your hand to her with a sincere smile, hoping she didnât pick up on your nerves.Â
âAh, so youâre the woman my dad canât stop talking about!â She laughs, flashing you her gorgeous smile.Â
âOh really?â You quirk an eyebrow up and look at Joel, nudging him playfully.Â
He raises his hands in defense, âGuilty as charged.â You huff a laugh at Joel and shift your gaze back to Sarah.Â
âItâs nice to meet you. Iâve heard so much about you as well.âÂ
âDo you mind if I steal her for a second, dad?â Sarah asks, and you canât help but feel extremely anxious. You genuinely donât think a fourteen year old has ever made you so frazzled with nerves like this before.Â
You follow her to the lounge chairs by the pool, taking a seat across the one she sat in.Â
She slaps her thighs with her hands, a small smile evading her lips.Â
âSo,â She starts, seemingly collecting her thoughts. âThis isnât some âwhat are your intentions with my dadâ intervention, I promise. But, like, I really hope youâre serious about him.â She looks at you with apprehension in her eyes, and youâre a bit taken aback by her words.Â
You couldâve guessed this was coming. Judging from what Joel has told you about their relationship, it was only fitting that sheâd be so protective of him.
âIâve seen him get hurt before. Not just by what my mother did, but with other women, too. I honestly think youâre the first woman who didnât skip out on him after finding out he has a kid.âÂ
âThat would never make me run. Your bond with your father is something thatâs so strong, and I would never want to come between that. I can promise you that your dad has a better chance at breaking my heart than I do breaking his.âÂ
âHe wonât. Heâs a good man and he deserves someone kindhearted like you. I can tell you are. Iâm glad you two found each other. I havenât seen him this happy and relaxed in⊠a long time.â Sarah laughs, and you canât help but smile at her admission.
âI pinky promise Iâll treat him great. Heâs a real special guy, and I like him a lot.â You hold your pinky out to her, and with a beaming smile, she hooks her pinky with yours and gives it a little shake.Â
âI know. Itâs just nice to finally see him getting his feelings reciprocated back to him. Most women only romanticize the uniform he wears and not the person he actually is.âÂ
âWell, I gotta say, they all definitely missed out on an amazing man.â And part of you was thankful for that, which is something you didnât want to admit aloud.Â
Because if it werenât for those women in his past that didnât work out with him, you wouldâve never had a chance with him. You glance over at Joel, and he was chatting with some other guests. You couldnât help admire him and his calm, happy demeanor.Â
As if he senses you looking, he turns his head in your direction to meet your gaze and winks. You offer him a soft smile before turning back to Sarah.Â
âThey are, but something tells me youâre here to stay. Not saying that to like, I donât know, scare you off or anything, but you and him really do make a nice couple.âÂ
âActually,â You huff a laugh and glance over at him once more, âHe hasnât asked me to be official or anything yet. I am here for the long haul, though, and I want you to know that I respect you and your relationship with your dad. I wouldnât ever want to overstep any boundaries.âÂ
Sarah groans and huffs, rolling her eyes as she looks over at Joel. âThis man, I swear. Want me to yell at him for you?â The mischievous glint in her eye tells you she would actually do so.Â
You shake your head with a laugh, and she puts her hand on your shoulder as she leans forward.Â
âAlso, you donât need to worry about overstepping. Itâs⊠nice having someone else around. I appreciate you saying you respect our relationship, though. Dad was always apprehensive about bringing women over because my opinion means so much to him. Youâve got my approval in the bag, though.âÂ
âI appreciate that, Sarah. Iâm sorry if meeting me was too soon or awkward for you. I wasnât expecting to exchange pleasantries today.â She grins and waves her hand between your bodies at your words.Â
âNonsense. Iâve been pretty excited to meet you, seeing as you have my dad crushing like a teenage boy again. I just want him to be happy, and I know he is with you.â She throws her arm over your shoulders, and you immediately reciprocate the hug.Â
Admitting to Sarah that you were in this for the long haul even shocked you. Itâs not that you didnât want to be, but your love life in the past hasnât exactly been to your liking. Joel is different, though, and seeing that he has people in his corner who love and care about him tells you that theyâd go to great lengths to protect him.Â
It was crystal clear that both of you wanted whatever was going on between you two. You were apprehensive to put your all into it.Â
Youâve been known to pull back when things got serious. It was a defense mechanism to protect your heart and peace.Â
You knew you were falling, but the million dollar question still remained: would Joel catch you?Â
You were pulled out of your thoughts when Sarah separated herself from you.Â
âI donât know about you, but Iâm starving.â She says, and she coaxes you to follow her back to the grill where Joel and Tommy stood.Â
âEverythinâ good?â Joel asks, slinging his arm around your shoulder. You nod and offer him a smile.Â
You were about to go after you plated your food, but Joel shook his head and gently pulled you back to him.Â
âUh uh, where you goinâ?â He has a goofy grin on his lips as he pulls you in, giving you a kiss. You canât help but laugh against his lips and gently push him away.Â
âThereâs people here, Joel!â You playfully tsk, and he squints his eyes.Â
âWhat, I canât kiss my girl?âÂ
My girl. The phrase made butterflies swirl in your stomach and heat to rise to your face.Â
âNever said that, but technically, Iâm not your girl yet.â You quirk an eyebrow at him.Â
Tommy laughs and nudges Joel, âDamn brother, you havenât asked her to be official yet? Hellâs wrong with ya? Hop to it!âÂ
âComing from someone who didnât settle down until like a year ago. Shut up you little shit.â Joel huffs, crossing his arms over his chest.Â
âWas watinâ for the right one! Then this beauty changed my life in the best way possible and put me in my place,â Tommy pulls Maria into his side, kissing her cheek. She rolls her eyes and nudges him playfully, walking back into the house before Tommy points at you. ââN this missy right here is gonna do the exact same for ya. Donât be âfraid to put him in his place, sweetheart, he needs it.â Tommy howls with laughter as Joel glares at him.
âSo fuckinâ dramatic.â Joel mumbles under his breath.
âSo what, you donât want me to put you in your place?â Youâre enjoying seeing him squirm a little as your hand traces circles over the white linen that clings to his back.Â
âNah, it ainât that. You can put me in my place anytime, baby.â He winks, and you immediately pick up on the innuendo behind his voice.Â
âYouâre fighting with fire, Mr. Miller.â You murmur to him, and his hand moves down to your ass to give it a subtle, playful squeeze.Â
ââS my job, baby.âÂ
âDonât think this is one you can put out.â You wink at him before walking away to join Maria in the house.
âOkay, you have to tell me everything,â Maria situates herself on the couch with a glass of wine. You sit down next to her and tuck your legs under yourself, smoothing your dress out before leaning your head on your fist. âHow in the world did you and Joel become a thing? What happened to that one guy that you used to tell me about?âÂ
You laugh at her enthusiasm toward your love life, inhaling a deep breath before diving into the story about your shitty ex and all the stupid trust issues he gave you. He really did a number on you, which is why you were so content with being single and thriving. You told Maria that you kept your guard up to protect yourself and your heart, because the last thing you wanted was to give your all to someone once again, only to be burned. Maria put her hand on your knee as a reassuring smile spread across her lips.Â
âHoney, I can promise you that that man standing out there has it bad for you. Doesnât matter how long youâve been seeing each other. I can see it in the way he looks at you,â Your gaze trails out to the backyard as Joel sips on a beer, talking with Tommy and a few others who you presume are the neighbors before Mariaâs voice pulls your attention back to her, âJoel is a good man, and despite the way you both have been hurt in the past, you still both found each other and gave this,â She waves her hands to gesture between you and him, âA chance. Lord knows that man could use a good woman like you in his life.âÂ
You felt the sting behind your eyes immediately. Mariaâs words were nothing short of assuring, and she smiles as you wipe your tears with a small laugh.Â
âBaby, just because you finally got the flame on your candle to burn bright again, doesnât mean heâs going to dim yours. His is finally strong on its own, too. I know that youâre so independent and youâve been used to it for some time now, but let his flame make yours even stronger. You can be stronger together.âÂ
And you knew she was right. The clarity blindsided you, but you got your answer: Joel would one hundred percent, undoubtedly catch you.Â
-
A few hours later, the sun had started to set and the neighbors went back to their respective homes, leaving you, Maria, Tommy, Joel and Sarah left. You and Maria insisted you help clean up even though Joel and Tommy both told you it wasnât necessary. You both waved them off and got everything put away and washed in less than an hour.Â
Maria refilled her glass of wine as you poured yourself one and both went to settle back onto the couch, Joel and Tommy in tow. Sarah came running down the stairs and up to Joel, a pleading look strewn across her features.Â
âKelly invited me over to a night swim and slumber party. Can I go? Please?â She had a hopeful look as she clasped her hands together to shake them, silently begging Joel to say yes.Â
âI thought she was sick?â He asked, running his hands over the stubble on his chin.Â
âNo dad, Sasha is the one thatâs sick.âÂ
You tried to stifle a laugh at her âduhâ tone, so you just bit your lip and stared at him. He sighed and looked at you, his demeanor changing in the slightest.Â
âSure, but please check in with me every few hours or so. Do I need to drop you off?â He asks, resting his beer bottle on his thigh.Â
âThank you!â She throws her arms around him, and he grunts as he returns the hug. âNo, Kellyâs mom offered to pick me up. She can drop me back off tomorrow, too.â She says, and before Joel can get another word in, she rushes back upstairs.Â
Joel sighs as he leans back into the couch, pinching the bridge of his nose.Â
âTeenagers.â He grumbles, taking a swig of his beer. You pat his thigh and lean into him, giving him a smile.Â
âWell now that itâs just goinâ to be adults, why donât we get the real party started,â Tommy wiggles his brows, and all three of you look at him in confusion. ââS a joke, people. Sheesh. How âbout some music, though.â He connects his phone to the speaker sitting on one of the shelves, playing a mix of late 90âs and country music.Â
Joel finds himself leaning into you as one of his hands slips below the hem of your dress, drawing circles into the skin of your thigh. His touch sends a shiver down your spine and he looks at you with a quirked brow, clearly pleased with your reaction to his touch.Â
You got turned on so easily now. It wasnât fair. Just one look alone from the older Miller brother could have your panties around your ankles in milliseconds, and you truly werenât above begging him to touch you.Â
The smug smirk on his face told you he knew it, too, but you both agreed to take things slow. You couldnât even remember why you agreed to such a thing, because the tension between you two had been through the roof since your date at the fair. You truly didnât know how much self restraint you had.Â
Mariaâs laugh had ripped through your thoughts, earning your undivided attention.Â
âNo way. I donât believe you.â She says, laughing at Tommy.Â
ââS true! Joel and I are a couple âa Austinâs finest line dancers.â Tommy shrugs, looking over at Joel.Â
âThose days are long over, brother.â Joel groans, leaning his head back onto the couch.Â
âBullshit. Betcha still know how to dance to Brooks & Dunn.âÂ
âEven if I didââ
âCâmon cowboy, show us what you got.â You tease, and Joel shakes his head.Â
âMm mm. Wonât do it unless you ladies do it with us.â He negotiates, and your eyes flit to Maria who smiles upside down and shrugs her shoulders.
âWouldnât hurt to learn.â She says, and you nod in agreement.Â
âItâs settled then.â Tommy slaps his thighs, standing up and offering his hand to Maria. Tommy tosses Joel his Stetson off of the coat rack which Joel catches with ease, putting it onto his head as he grins at you, offering his hand to help you stand up.Â
âHey dad! Kellyâs mom is hereâ oh god, are you and Uncle Tommy line dancing again?â She groans, and Joel holds his hands up in defense.Â
âUncle Tommy coaxed me into it and these lovely ladies here wanna learn. Not my fault.âÂ
Sarah rolls her eyes and looks between you and Maria. âGood luck with these two knuckleheads. It was nice to meet you!â She says as she heads for the door.Â
âYou too!â You call back.Â
âText me when you get there, please.â Joel calls out to her, and she says âkay!â before the front door shuts behind her. Tommy plays the familiar tune of Boot Scootinâ Boogie, and Joel stands next to him before they start to dance in sync. They both hold on to the front of the waistbands of their pants where their belts would presumably be as their footwork syncs up perfectly.Â
You and Maria watch in awe as they move together effortlessly, mentally noting the moves theyâre repeating. Maria nudges you and you look at her with a shit-eating grin on your face.Â
âGirl, are you seeing this? Got damn near ten degrees hotter in here just watching my man dance.âÂ
âTell me about it. If Joel and I werenât taking it slow, Iâd probably jump his bones right now.âÂ
âMore power to you. I couldnât do that even if I tried my damndest.âÂ
âTrust me, itâs hard. Especially when he looks like⊠that.â You stare at Joel as he lets the familiar movements flow through his bones, dancing on beat to the upbeat song. He looks at you and shoots you a wink, making you bite your lip to hide your smile.Â
âCâmon ladies.â Tommy waves you both over, and you both join in with them. It takes a couple of tries to sync up with Joel, but youâre eventually moving with him. He takes your hand and spins you, pulling you into him as he presses you flush against his chest.Â
You smirk at him and pluck his Stetson off of his head, putting it onto yours. Joel moves his hand to the small of your back, causing you to practically grind into him while you dance. You bite your lip and bat your lashes as you can feel the tension in Joelâs body that desperately needs relief. He shakes his head with a chuckle, leaning in as his lips brush your ear.Â
âEver heard of the cowboy hat rule, baby?â His voice is raspy and low. He noses at your jawline before leaving a kiss below your ear, pulling his face back into your view.Â
You shake your head no, and as the song ends, he gives Tommy a look before intertwining your hand with his to lead you upstairs.Â
âJoelââ You start, but as soon as you step into his bedroom, he closes the door and locks it. He cages you in between both of his strong arms, hands resting on either side of your head as he pops his knee out. Itâs dangerously close to your aching cunt, and if you moved forward just a bit, you could easily grind yourself onto him.Â
The thought was tempting but your mind went blank, the close proximity between you both making your head spin.Â
âThe cowboy hat rule,â He starts, leaning down to kiss your neck, âIs when a lady takes a manâs cowboy hat off of his head nâ puts it on herself. Means that the lady wants to be with the man and essentially wants to do more with him.âÂ
âM-more?â Your breath catches in your throat as his hot tongue glides over the warmth of your neck. Youâre beginning to pant harder, hands twitching at your sides, aching to touch him.Â
âMhm.â He slots his thigh between your legs, and you canât help the soft moan that bubbles in your throat at the delicious friction.Â
âHad a whole romantic thing planned in my head on how to ask you to be my girl, but fuck baby, I canât wait no more. I know it ainât been long, but I really want you to be mine. âN I sure would love to be your man.âÂ
Your brain starts to function a little better, so you bring your hands up to cup his face. You canât help the grin that spreads on your lips, Joel mirroring you.Â
âDonât need fancy. Just need you, baby. Iâd love to be yours, Joel.âÂ
And he steals a searing kiss from you, arms wrapping around you as he moves you both backwards toward his bed. He takes his hat off of your head before setting it on his dresser, sitting down on his bed as you follow suit and straddle him. His hands hold onto your thighs, teasing you as they move underneath the hemline of your dress.Â
His lips separate from yours and he buries his face into your neck, kissing and licking your soft flesh as he grabs a handful of your ass. You canât help but grind yourself into him like last time, the carnal desire for him shredding through you as your self-restraint dwindles down to nearly nothing.Â
âI-I know we said slow, but baby, can I touch you?â He asks, and you fervently nod your head. Your thoughts were so jumbled that you couldnât be bothered to form a coherent response. Your senses were all-consumed by this man under youâyour boyfriend. You smile at the thought before your jaw goes slack when his hand moves your underwear to the side, fingers sliding through your slick folds.Â
You bite your lip to stifle the whine that shoots through your chest, heart leaping into your throat. You knew it wouldnât take much for you to come undone if Joel kept teasing you the way he did.Â
âShit, baby, youâre so fuckinâ wet. This all for me, pretty girl?â He asks, his Southern drawl as thick as honey, darkened eyes meeting yours.Â
âYes.â You cry, rutting your hips against his fingers.
âCan I?â He asks, prodding the tip of his fingers at your entrance. You nod once again, gripping onto his shoulders as you begin to leave kisses across his neck and collarbone. He slides a finger down to the knuckle in you effortlessly, and you canât help but nip at his neck as the sensation courses through your body.Â
His one finger alone could reach places yours never could, and it made you dizzy. He slipped another finger into you, the stretch stinging in the slightest as you rocked onto his hand.Â
âSo fuckinâ tight, baby. There you go.â Joel guides you as he begins to move his own fingers, curling them in your warmth. He was hitting that spot that you could barely ever reach, making your eyes roll to the back of your skull as your head fell back, panting his name repeatedly as you felt the coil already tightening in your core.Â
âSo fuckinâ pretty, hm? My girl is so gorgeous like this, gettinâ herself off on my fingers. Look like a fuckinâ angel, darlinâ. Such a good girl.â Joel praises you, and your head snaps up as your eyes meet his. He has a devilish smirk on his lips as you thread your fingers through his curls, smashing your lips to his. He groans into the kiss and picks up the pace of his fingers, your arousal now dripping down to his wrist. He felt your pussy clench around his digits, and he was coaxing you to come undone.Â
âThatâs it baby. Can feel ya, I know you wanna cum. Give it tâme.â He says, and he swallows your moans in a kiss as the band snaps in your core, body convulsing as you ride out your orgasm.Â
Youâre breathless as you slump against him, kissing his neck repeatedly as you try and catch your breath.Â
He slowly slides his fingers out of you and you moan at the loss of fullness, gaze meeting his once again. He slips his fingers coated in your arousal into his mouth, eyes fluttering shut as he tastes you. He leans in to kiss you, and you can easily taste yourself on his tongue.Â
âSo fuckinâ sweet. Can I taste all of ya?â He asks, and you donât even think twice before you nod. He flips you around onto the bed, kneeling onto the floor as he hooks both of his fingers into the waistband of your panties. Youâre about to lift your hips so he can slide them off of you when a sharp knock on his door sounds.Â
He groans and sits on his haunches, forehead falling onto your thigh. You giggle and sit up, running your hands through his curls.Â
âWhat, Tommy?â Joel calls out, and Tommy laughs on the other side of the door.Â
âJusâ lettinâ ya know Maria ân I are gonna stay in the guest bedroom. The hell are you doinâ in there?âÂ
Joel gets up with a grunt and stalks toward his bedroom door, unlocking it before swinging it open.
âNone of your goddamn business. Thatâs what.â Joel rolls his eyes, and Tommy raises his hands in defense.Â
âShit, my bad!â He looks past Joel and winks at you, and your face heats up immediately.Â
âYou have five seconds to get out of my face before I beat your ass. Fuckinâ cockblock.â Joel grumbles, glaring at his brother.Â
âFair. Carry on. Wrap it before you tap it!â He turns on his heel and trudges down the stairs, and Joel turns back around to look at you, face beet red.Â
âIgnore him.â He sighs, pinching the bridge of his nose.Â
âNoted,â You pat the spot next to you and he rejoins you on the bed. âNow where were we?â
