California, No. 4. Know what I like about all this vinyl nonsense? Listening so deliberately with no skipping starts putting songs I’ve heard so much I don’t hear them anymore back into their original contexts and refreshing them. Example: I’ve heard Fire and Rain too often and have learned to screen out the sadness and ignore that growling cello or bass or whatever it is, which only barely obeys the song chord changes. It’s really effective and ominous like a musical version of Churchill’s Black Dog of Depression, and lyrically elemental stuff like rain fire sunshine moonlight highways frost etc runs through the whole set. Note: hi, Russ Kunkel!
