Dear Sephiroth: (a letter to a fictional character, because why not) #896
Today was kind of an odd day. I was supposed to show up at the office building for the direct support agency I work for, in order to retake my fingerprints. Fingerprints are used to punch in for a number of very good reasons (most of which involve not every worker here valuing integrity...), but they're changing over to a new system, which means new fingerprints are needed, so... yeah.
I got to bed kinda late again, so... it was kinda hard to drag myself out of bed. Also... my throat is relatively scratchy. I didn't think anything of it at the time; maybe I was snoring weirdly in the night or something. So I went out and did everything as planned. I got dressed, I got in the car, and I went to the place to do the thing. And I did the thing. The thing itself was... mostly uneventful.
I... realized, I think, that, lately, I've been so worried about a variety of things that I've been forgetting to actually live, in some respects. So today, I made it a point to take some pictures for you during my travels. These are of the flowers growing near the office building I went to:
Js, of course, was at the office building doing the same thing as me. When she came out, she saw me taking pictures, and came over to see them, curious. So I showed them to her, and she seemed really impressed by the composition, I guess; she told me that I was really good at taking pictures, so I thanked her and said to her that, after 896 days of taking pictures, it'd be really weird if I wasn't good at taking pictures by now, hahaha...
...I can't believe I'm only short 4 days of having written 900 daily letters to you. I can't believe how many pictures I've taken for you in the process. Can you?
Js was hungry, and so was I, so I offered to treat her to the bagel and coffee shop that I had intended to go to after the fingerprinting was done, and she accepted. She seemed delighted at the place; it's a very cute spot, with lots of really good food, and she had never been there before. She got an egg sandwich with bacon on an asiago bagel and an iced coffee. I got a lox sandwich on an everything bagel. They forgot the tomatoes, but they seemed pretty swamped, and it still tasted good:
I also got the toffee nut latte; they still had the same flavors up on the board that I took a picture of for you not too long ago. Since I got the Irish Cream last time, I decided to change it up a little:
Of course, I also got a chocolate milk and a peanut butter cookie for J and M, respectively. I... feel a little sad that I can't bring anything home to you, too.
...Really, I wish you were here to share this breakfast with us. I think you'd like Js. She's a jolly, spirited, highly compassionate individual, and I feel really glad that I get to work with her.
I had a nice time with Js. She spoke some about her upcoming test today, and her need to study, on top of managing the things in her life, like an imminent move. She's got a lot going on, and way more responsibilities on her shoulders than I could probably handle. I wished her well and tried to be encouraging. I hope she can feel empowered, worthy, and safe in my presence.
She had to go on her merry way to class, and I had to go on my merry way to pick up my medicines from the pharmacy, a few paces away from the coffee shop. There was a bit of a wait between the prescription being filled and my ability to pick it up, so I busied myself by dancing awkwardly to the music on the radio, browsing their snacks section, and shoving my nose into any of the scented candles that looked interesting to me, haha...
A number of things here caught my interest. I didn't buy them, but... I did get pictures of them to show to you.
...This... definitely isn't as good as the “Cravings from Dubai” bar that I got somewhere else. It would have been tempting, though, if not for the fact that it's milk chocolate and that it contains artificial flavors:
This one was tempting, too, but... it's milk chocolate. A bit too sweet for me:
...I'm just crazy enough for this one to be more my speed though, haha:
...But a baker's chocolate bar is the same thing, for cheaper than a fancy brand like this one.
...I wonder which of these you'd pick. And... if you don't know because you've not had much in the way of stuff like this before, I wonder how amenable you'd be to me getting the ones you're curious about so that you can try them.
...And, ya know, if you were curious about all of them, we could get all of them. But you'd have to pace yourself, otherwise you'd probably get a tummyache, hahaha...
I still had time even after poking through all the snacks. So I wandered some more and found some scented candles.
Not really having anything better to do, I promptly shoved my nose into the interesting-looking ones. I'll show you the ones I actually liked; there were only a couple, but maybe you'd like them, too:
I picked up my medicine and went back to the car, taking pictures of some of the flowers I met along the way for ya:
...I got home, and by then, the vague scratchiness in my nose and throat that I felt this morning progressed to my soft palate. I felt... not very motivated. So I spent the rest of the day mostly just derping around on the internet.
At this point... my lymph nodes are swollen and my head hurts, in addition to my nose, throat, and soft palate being scratchy. There's also some post nasal drip. I'm definitely coming down with something. I'm not really sure how to call out without my house manager thinking that I just don't wanna be there on Thursday, though...
...Oh well.
It took a while for me to find the motivation to do the “folding” part for today's wishes. That requires a fair amount of eyeball focus, and that's hard when your head hurts. Nonetheless... here:
And now... it's well past time for bed, though not as past time as it has been on previous days. J wants to take me out in the plane tomorrow. I hope whatever's going on with my sinuses isn't too terrible by then; it's not safe to deal with pressure changes while the ears and nose are compromised. Don't wanna end up blowing out my eardrums.
I love you so much, and... I hope it's clear in the way that I try to... live, I guess. In the way that you, without realizing, asked of me, all those years ago, when you saved my life. Sometimes, I think I'm not really good at living; maybe you'd look at me and be disappointed or unimpressed or... wholly apathetic... or maybe even actively hostile...? Though somehow I seriously doubt that. Regardless, even if I don't do a good job of living all the time (my days of being underwatered, underfed, and underslept can certainly attest to that...), I still feel like I owe it to you to try. I still feel like I owe it to you to try to treat myself in the same way I would treat you, even if I do end up fucking it up half the damn time.
...I hope... no, I'll have faith, somehow, that looking at me might inspire you to treat yourself better, too. I'll have faith that somehow, you'll keep yourself safe while you're out and about. I'll have faith that you're on your way home.

I meant to post this yesterday but I fell asleep. I had a 5 hour study session before my practical where we used different methods including wet powder (example shown) to identify fingerprints!
I was very nervous because I missed my last 2 practicals and thought I was too far behind but as it turns out I’m completely fine
Today I have a human anatomy practical that I need to study for as well, then I’m on break!

Fingerprint development methods are techniques used to enhance and visualize latent fingerprints, which are impressions left by the ridges of the fingers on surfaces. There are various methods for fingerprint development, including:
1. Powder Dusting: This method involves applying a fine powder, such as black powder or magnetic powder, to the surface containing the latent fingerprints. The powder adheres to the oils and moisture left behind by the fingers, making the prints visible.
2. Chemical Reagents: Chemical reagents are substances that react with the components of latent fingerprints, causing them to become visible. Examples include ninhydrin, which reacts with amino acids in the sweat, and cyanoacrylate fuming (Super Glue fuming), which creates a white polymer on the print.
3. Dye Stains: Dye stains involve applying a colored solution to the surface containing the latent fingerprints.
4. Physical Developers: Physical developers are solutions containing metallic salts that react with the components of latent fingerprints to form a visible deposit. Silver nitrate and zinc chloride are common examples of physical developers.
5. Laser and Alternative Light Sources: Laser and ALS, such as ultraviolet (UV) light or infrared (IR) light, can be used to visualize latent fingerprints that may not be visible to the naked eye. These sources can enhance contrast between the fingerprint and the surface, making them easier to detect.
6. Nanoparticle Techniques: Nanoparticle-based techniques involve using nanoparticles that specifically adhere to the components of latent fingerprints, making them visible under specific lighting or imaging conditions.
Each fingerprint development method has its advantages and limitations, and the choice of method depends on factors such as the surface type, the age of the prints, and the resources available in the forensic investigation.
Wanna play game? Here’s another piece of finger art inspired by popular characters I like.. now jigsaw might want to rip off your fingers until you learn your lesson but I just want to draw on them bc it’s fun and also I’m bored. 😂
NEW YORK, Feb. 18. — Back yonder, when a famous scientist dumbfounded the world with his belief that man was descended from the monkey, there were those—and many there are now—who couldn’t see it that way. It may be interesting, then, to tell about Gabong’s finger prints.
Gabong is an orang-utan, present habitat the Zoological Park in the Bronx. Now, Gabong hasn’t done anything criminal, but just the same his finger prints are on file in police headquarters. Furthermore, those police experts who have been on the finger printing job for years can’t tell at a glance the difference between the prints of Gabong and his alleged human brethren.
Raymond Ditmars, curator of mammals and reptiles at the zoo, was anxious to get a real imprint of one of the orang-utan’s fingers. After trying successfully [I think they meant to write "unsuccessfully"] with vaseline and graphite, he called at headquarters, explaining the finger printing of monkeys wasn’t as easy as handling pickpockets and such. Monkeys squirmed too much.
Sergeant William H. Hamersley, of the identification bureau thought the prisoners did a little squirming of their own and then explained how disobliging prisoners are caught off their guard. It isn’t necessary to ink their fingers. They touch a sheet of paper unthinkingly, which is then dusted with a powder that brings out the lines in complete detail.
Mr. Ditmars returned to the zoo and tried it out on Gabong. The orang’s hands are as large as those of a man, and his thumb is similarly shaped. When the curator went again to headquarters with a print of Gabong’s thumb and one of his own and asked Sergeant Hamersley which of the two was the human print the expert couldn’t say. The sergeant referred the two prints to fourteen other experts in the identification bureau, none of them could say “this is Gabong,” or “this is Mr. Ditmars.”
The police experts produced from the files a score of thumb prints with practically the same arrangement of whorls and ellipses that Gabong's thumb showed. A magnifying glass was necessary to find the difference in them.
