I can’t find my style for the life of me, how do people just know how to dress? 😭
Veiled
I believe this is my most successful acrylic painting of my recent series. Inspired by dark fantasy painters I managed to get just the right horror film lighting, and a decent collaboration of my materials, even if the patterned paper I added to the veil and robe with image transfer caused a lot of trouble. I started by using foam rollers for a few light, splotchy layers of green, blue, and yellow across the image, washed some blues into the figures and continued to paint by adding local colours first, then shading largely with slightly tinted blacks. Midway through I used some washes again to unify the blue-red-green gradient that had emerged. After the initial layers I largely painted around the metal leaf bits of the background; the foreground ones were added from a vial that I collect excess leaf in, pressed into the size with a silicone tool. I am happy I managed to keep some of the coloured pencil lines on the face that I deliberately overdid. When I was finally unsure about whether or not i should drag the background yellow streaks into the figure I overlaid a sheet of plastic foil to try first. Makeshift digital layer! I might not have been courageous enough otherwise (painting on paper doesn't allow for just wiping something off I don't like). "Veiled", acrylic and metal leaf on Bristol carton, A4.

“Window Breeze” A monumental piece for me. So a bit of a short story ahead. I am going through my past artwork as I prepare for some exhibitions and the possible loss of my Tumblr drawing diary. www.Sir-Render.tumblr.com. This is where my adventure all started and I met some wonderful creatives that had a great impact on me over the past 5 years. This piece is of a wonderful lady I know as Miss ESD (electricsexdoll.tumblr.com). Her kindness and willingness to let me practice my reintroduction into drawing fostered what became a definitive signature style for me. I will never forget that, or the emotion behind this piece. I knew I had found my strength, confidence, and “this is it” factor. It was quite illuminating and an adrenaline rush for sure. @electricsexdoll . #illumination #sirrender #sirrenderart #electricsexdoll #fineartfigure #artisticnude #findyourstyle #figuredrawing #artist #artheals (at Mountain View, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1wnyi6BhSz/?igshid=hfkpyg5m348o
Never compare yourself to other artists. You are talented and have your own unique style. Keep drawing, keep painting, keep making awesome stuff. Learn from the masters but in the end, YOU DO YOU! . . . . #ltmquoutes #quotes #quote #artists #art #youregoodenough #inspiration #nope #neverquit #unique #patience #rawtalent #findyourself #gif #giftquotes #gifart #findyourstyle #youdoyou https://www.instagram.com/p/B1H2jyzlMEC/?igshid=1ketlrl26w4fz
Is it bad to have been promoting different portfolios to ADs over time? What I show on my website always changes significantly between promos. I don't think it's a clear, linear, "This artist is becoming better" progression either. I feel like i'm sort of rotating between 3 or 4 styles that just haven't really gelled yet. But in the process may be torpedo-ing my image.
Art Directors are like very forgiving elephants: We remember, but we also don’t hold it against you. I hire a lot of artists that I’ve seen develop over a few years. I don’t hold their past against them…but I also can’t hire then until I see that their portfolio is a solid body of consistent work. It’s like a pro sports team having minor league teams to farm talent.
As for linear progression…usually it only looks linear in hindsight. Right now you’re just in the messy developmental stage. Trying a bunch of stuff on before you start to synthesize it into one looks. Have you read the blog post on how to figure out your style? it might help…
