Today is the last episode of Deep In and it was a roller-coaster of emotions just like the rest of the series.
Last week, Zhang Zhun discovered pictures of himself in Zhen Xin's phone and realized that was he thought was a wet dream, truly happened. He feels betrayed by this and doesn't trust Zhen Xin anymore, which is why he rejected his proposal. Zhen Xin doesn't understand his reaction because they are now together. He refuses to admit that it could be considered wrong. The two of them ends up breaking up and the ring that was supposed to represent their forever is now the symbol of their break up.
While the actors' romantic life is over, this is another story for the characters they are playing in the movie. Gao Zhun and Fang Chi are back together and living together. Fang Chi admits to Gao Zhun's (ex?) wife that he can't be with her because he loves man. He realized that love is more than the performative romantic acts of love, but that it is something more important than that. He found it with Gao Zhun. After he left, Gao Zhun's (ex?) wife calls to warn him and the latter reveals that he is the man Fang Chi loves. After all these hardships, both are finally able to be together on their own accord. They got their own happy ending, which is the end of their story.
Back to Zhang Zhun after the filming of the movie ended, he still can't forget about everything that happened between him and Zhen Xin. He re-living every memories they had, from the moment they met, to the moment they ended up together. Those memories are a reminder of what he lost and he misses him so much. The promo of the movie still requires him to do a few things, but he never met Zhen Xin again. The whole sequence, you can hear Gao Zhun's favorite song, a song about a lost love that you can't forget, highlighting the melancholia Zhang Zhun is feeling, going to all those places filled with memories of his love.
In parallel with have Zhen Xin's manager meeting with Zhang Zhun's grandma and they talk about what it means to accept that love is so diverse and sometimes you just need to feel accepted by those you love the most. Perhaps, Zhang Zhun only needed someone to tell him that they approve of him being in love with a man, being in love with Zhen Xin. Since the beginning of his relationship with Zhen Xin, no one has told Zhang Zhun that they approve of his love. The filming crew wanted no issues around the movie, the managers tried to make them stop, the fans were not supportive of their artists being gay and friends or family were expecting things from them. I think when Zhang Zhun knew his grandmother approved, it probably gave him more courage. The courage of pursuing again this love that he misses. Zhen Xin was still waiting for him and the two of them, also, finally got their happy ending.
Just to make the whole embedded narrative even more important, the second post-credit scene shows that it's in fact Zhen Xin and Zhang Zhun that are the real characters of the story. They were the characters of the book the real Fang Chi and Gao Zhun were reading. They were symbolic and psychological significant for them.
In the end of the series there was a message from the director or the writer that says "May you all always retain the courage to pursue what you love. We can live any kind of life we want. Be bold in becoming, pursuing and loving" which, in my opinion, is the message of this whole series. It was a very interesting series that made a certain "mise an abyme" that was making me care about two couples, who had parallels between them. This is not something I've seen a lot in a BL series and I think the director and the actors did a great job.
