Rose chafers on meadowsweet - friendly little giants.
(Cetonia aurata, imago, on Filipendula ulmaria)
Note - Protaetia cuprea ssp. metallica is also relatively common in the north west palaeartic and i can't remember checking the difference. The lack of white knees, and lack of dent at the top part of the wing cases surrounding the scutellum, and that C. aurata is probably the more common species around here has me settled on this ID but who knows ! I might be wrong.

Filipendula rubra / Queen of the Prairie at the Sarah P. Duke Gardens at Duke University in Durham, NC
Plant of the Day
Monday 17 July 2023
In the wonderful walled garden of Kierfiold House, Orkney, a clump of Filipendula camtschatica (giant meadowsweet) that has been a long term occupant of the border was starting to flower. This leafy perennial meadowsweet has stout stems up to 2m tall and thrives in a moist soil in sun or part shade.
