Mulder says yes when asked if he's the husband in order to stay with scully....go
Together with this prompt: Scully wakes up in Empedocles to see Mulder laying his head on her bed holding her hand. She asks how he managed to get in her room. He replies, âWell we might be married now.â Set in "Empedocles", obviously.

Everything Will Be Just Fine
âWho are you? The husband?â Mulder makes his decision in a split second, looking at the ER nurse, seeing Scully being wheeled away from him. Out of the corner of his eye, he sees Agent Doggett rush toward them. What is that guy even doing here? It doesnât matter. What matters is Scully and that one question. Who is he, really?
âYes,â he says, hoping she wonât have time to check Scullyâs paperwork. âIâm her husband. Iâm the- the-â How easy it is to lie about being married to Scully, and how difficult it is to spell out the true words. Who he is. To her, to the child sheâs carrying. Who might be in danger.
Itâs enough; the nurse pushes him through the double doors and into a whole new world before Doggett can speak to him.
Mulderâs only job in the ER is to hold Scullyâs hand while they work on her. He picks up a few things here and there, not understanding much. Scully is the medical doctor, and sheâs just lying there, with her eyes closed.
âYouâre going to be okay,â Mulder mumbles, half to himself.
âYouâre here,â she says weakly, trying to turn her head to look at him, but then another nurse steps in between them, making him let go of her hand.
âSir, you better wait over there.â She points to the corner. âWe need to make sure your wife and baby are okay.â
With one last look at Scully, whoâs anxiously staring at the monitor, Mulder does what heâs told. He stuffs his hands into his coat pockets, feeling useless. He watches the doctors take care of Scully, talking to her. He sees her nod. Was that a smile on her face? He wants to know whatâs going on, too. Later, heâll ask her and sheâll explain it to him. Once they know the baby is fine.
The baby.
Heâs seen it before. There were several sonograms pinned to Scullyâs fridge. He observed every single one of them. Then, one night, he found one in his own bedroom. He stared at it for a long while, his finger tracing the tiny shadows again and again until tears fell from his eyes.
But today is the first time heâs really seeing it. Over there on the monitor is the baby â their baby â and its heart is beating. One beat after another, never stopping. Their baby is tough. Mulder finds himself drawn to it, wanting closer. Needing to make sure this is real.
âYour baby is okay, Mr. Scully,â a nurse says and he needs a moment to understand that sheâs talking to him. Mr. Scully â thatâs him. Heâll change his name, be anyone, if he gets to be here.
âMy- my wife?â The word should feel wrong from his lips, but it doesnât. Not even a little bit. It comes easily to him, like the most normal thing in the world.
âWeâll put her up in a room now. Everything is going to be okay,â the nurse says with a smile, and Mulder is so overwhelmed with relief that he almost hugs her.
*
He doesnât know what they gave Scully to sleep, but it must have been the good drugs. What is it about them and hospitals? Theyâve spent half a lifetime between bad cafeteria coffee and uncomfortable hospital chairs. His heart hasnât quite caught up yet.
Theyâre going to be fine.
The doctor confirmed it again when Mulder walked into Scullyâs room, now set up more comfortably. She was fast asleep, her head rolled to the side, just the way sheâs been sleeping lately. The sight of her filled him with love. Lately, sheâs falling asleep everywhere, her head falling against his shoulder more often than heâs used to. He wants to get used to it. Mulder wants to hold her hand through all of it, the good and the bad.
Thatâs why heâs still here, hours later. Scully hasnât woken up once. Skinner has called him a few times and heâs told him in no uncertain terms that he wonât go anywhere until Scully wakes up. Exhausted himself, he rests his head on her bed, right next to her arm. Just for a moment. He closes his eyes, and listens to her even breathing. Itâs always been his favorite lullaby.
âMulder? Is that you?â Fingers run gently but uncoordinated through his hair.
âHm? Scully? Hey, youâre awake.â He lifts his head to look into her droopy face. Heâs never been more in love with her. âHow are you feeling? Do you remember anything?â
âA little bit⌠the baby,â she says, putting a hand on her stomach.
âThe baby is fine,â Mulder assures her, putting his own hand next to hers. âThe doctor said you had a partial abruption. Youâll know better what that means.â
She nods and says, âI do. I guess theyâll monitor me for a while but weâll be⌠weâll be fine.â She poses it as a statement, but he sees the question in her eyes, the hint of uncertainty. He takes her hand into his, entwines their fingers, and kisses her knuckles.
âYouâre going to be just fine. The both of you. Trust me, I pestered every nurse and doctor.â They smile at each other.
âDo I want to know how you convinced them to let you stay with me?â
âWell,â he says, clearing his throat. âWe might be married now.â
âWhat?â Scully asks, smiling in disbelief. How he missed that smile. He doesnât want to spend another moment without seeing it.
âItâs family only,â he explains. âThe nurse asked if I was the husband and I-â
âYou said yes.â
âI did. Youâre not mad, are you?â
âIâm too tired and too drugged to be mad. But no, Mulder, of course, Iâm not mad. Iâm happy youâre here.â She squeezes his hand. From the looks of it, he wonât have much time with her before she falls back asleep. Any questions he might have wanted to ask will have to wait. There will be a right time for all of it.
âI saw our baby,â he says, awe-struck. âI saw its heartbeat.â
âHmm,â Scully hums sleepily, her eyes closing, but her lips are curled upwards in a soft smile. âMaybe,â she trails off, her voice slow. He watches her, blinking slowly, fully prepared to not hear the end of her sentence. Then she surprises him, his Scully. âMaybe you can come to my next appointment. Husband or not,â she says without opening her eyes.
âIâd love that.â
âBut first,â she says with a sigh. âFirst I want to have a pizza.â
He laughs, his eyes filling with tears. His Scully. Their baby. Theyâll all be just fine.

Fictober 2022Â â Day 8: Mulder and William have a day-out ; tagging @today-in-fic @xffictober2022 ; also on AO3
--
âYou sure you guys will be alright?â Scully asked for probably the third time already.
âYes, Scully, weâll be fine.â Mulder reassured her. âRight, buddy?â he asked turning to their four-year-old who was already bouncing off the walls with energy.
âYeth, Daddy!â William exclaimed. He was all smiles and excitement that Scully couldnât help but chuckle.
âAlright, but you have to promise Mommy that youâll be good for Daddy.â Scully said, getting down to Williamâs level.
William nodded his head eagerly before saying, âI pwomise, Mommy.â He had a serious look on his face that Mulder would swear made him look so much alike Scully.
âOkay, well, you guys have fun, alright?â she said. âBut not too much fun.â She added, looking up to Mulder who just winked back.
âGive Mommy a big hug, buddy.â Mulder instructed William.
William softly lunged himself into Scullyâs arms and she engulfed him with a hug and tons of kisses that made him giggle loudly. It was one of the sounds that made Scullyâs heart soar with so much love.
âI love you, both.â She said, pressing a kiss on Williamâs cheek before standing up and kissing Mulder on the lips.
âAnd we love you too.â Mulder told her, pressing another kiss on her lips.
Scully walked them to the car, made sure they all had their stuff packed â food, first aid kit, bicycles â yes, bicycles. They were going to a trail that Mulder reassured her was safe for the both of them. She trusts him so much that she doesnât seem to worry.
She watched her boys drive away, waving back at William who was waving to her from his booster seat and blowing her kisses. When they were out of sight, she went back inside and wondered what to do having the whole house to herself for the next couple of hours.

CHARACTERS BELONG TO PIXELBERRY STUDIOS
It was the perfect Halloween day. The sun was shining brightly in a clear blue sky, and the air was crisp, though not yet cold. There may have been more leaves on the Boston streets than on its trees, but those that remained scattered on branches helped paint a beautiful fall scene. Â
Casey stepped outside and paused on their townhomeâs top step. Tossing her head back and shutting her eyes, she took a deep breath until the cool autumn air filled her lungs. A genuine, joyful smile spread on her lips as memories of Halloweens from her younger days flooded her mind. The memories were precious, but the future was even more dear. A new mother herself, she was about to create new ones with her own baby girl, and she couldn't have asked for a more perfect day to start.Â
She sat on the steps, smoothing her royal blue dress and placing the large bowl of candy on top of her lap. It wasn't her first choice of costume. But not having a family costume on their first Halloween as a family was not an option. Tobias had been calling Samantha pumpkin practically since conception, so her costume was a given, but her parentâs choice was not so simple.
"I got it!" He ran into the kitchen exuberantly. "Peanuts! Charlie Brown. Lucy. DONE! Sammy is the Great Pumpkin. It's perfect!"
"Sammy is a generic pumpkin, honey, not the Great Pumpkin. Besides, Lucy was so⌠mean in that show. Do you think I'm mean?"
"WellâŚâ he smirked, âyou do have your days."  He pulled away before she smacked his shoulder. He then wrapped his arms around her waist and lavished her neck with ticklish kisses. The rest of the night was spent doing things they had to be careful about if they didn't want Sammy's sibling on the way.
Casey never came up with a better idea, and thatâs how she ended up sitting here in her blue dress and Mary Janes, eagerly awaiting her husband and daughterâs arrival.
Tobias was simply bubbling over, more animated than the character he was supposed to be. Decked out in his bright yellow shirt with a black zig-zag and matching shorts, he beamed from ear to ear as he spoke jibberish to the bouncing baby pumpkin on his hip. Casey's heart filled with joy watching them, but she couldn't help but chuckle.
"What?" he queried, quickly turning back to Sammy with a sing-song voice. "What? What's Mommy laughing at Sammy? Do you think she's laughing at you or me?"
"Oh, you," she assured. "A thousand times you!"
"Gee, thanks, babe!â
"It's not bad. I'm just thinking it wasn't too long ago that you were this playboy doctor. Mr. Non-Commitment and never settling down,â she joked. âHalloween activities were probably far more naughty than nice then⌠but now look at you. You're a natural. It's like you were born for this life."
"Well, maybe that's because I was," he said, sitting next to her and meeting her lips with a warm, tender kiss. "I just needed to find the one who could make it feel like a gift instead of a prison. I knew it was you the moment you came along and, well⌠when deciding between my old life and you, it was a no-brainer. I chose you."
"Awww," she giggled, snuggling close to his side. "That is so sweet. I'd say you were trying to butter me up for those naughty favors later⌠but then again, you know I'm a sure thing."
"Casey!" He exclaimed with feigned anger. "In front of the baby?"
"She doesn't understand us yet," she winked as her husband shook his head in bemusement.
"And this is just one reason I love you. But while Sammy may not understand yet," he pointed a few doors away, "those kids will. Now let's behave, baby girl; it's time to hand out some candy!"
Within minutes their steps were overtaken by neighborhood children. Sammy clung to her Daddyâs t-shirt, thoroughly unimpressed with the strange children, but her parents were another story. Tobias & Casey excitedly greeted each child, inquiring about their costumes as they dropped candy into their sacks. Witches, ghosts, a princess, a baseball player or two, the Carricks made a fuss over each and every one.Â
The day was winding down when a little girl showed up with her mother.
âTrick or treat,â she said with a soft voice.Â
Casey beamed as Tobias informed her that he knew she was Caseyâs favorite costume of the day. Blue scrubs, a white lab coat, and a stethoscope on her neck.Â
"Oh my goodness!" Casey squealed. "Youâre a doctor! Do you want to be a doctor when you grow up?â
The girl's dark curls bounced around her face as she nodded. Shyness getting the better of her, she moved against her motherâs leg.
âThatâs all she talks about,â her mom grinned. âI used to think it was a passing phase, but now Iâm starting to think I should save up for med school!â
âThatâs not the worst idea,â Casey smiled, squatting down to talk to the child at her level. âHey, you know Iâm a doctor, and my husband here is a doctor, too. I think you will make a wonderful doctor one day.âÂ
Pleased with the little girl's bright smile, Casey turned to Tobias. âHon, give her a little extra candy. She deserves it for all that studying she will need to do.â
âYou got it! But if you want, Iâll run inside and get my stationery. We can drop a letter of recommendation in there.â
âOh, we may take you up on that in another fourteen years!â Her mom laughed.
Tobias looked at the little girl. âI went to Hopkins, the best med school in the country. They love when they get letters from people who went there. Iâve got your back.â
Casey turned to him, unamused. âThe best! You were ranked fourth last year!â
âStill better than Perelman's sixth,â he winked.
Casey turned around and placed the candy in the childâs bag. âSweetheart, when you are a doctor, you might want to think twice before marrying another doctor.â
âHEY!â Tobias yelled, sending little Sammy into a litany of babbling. âSee, our daughter isnât happy with that statement either!â Â
Standing up with a chuckle, Casey wished the little girl and her mom well before reclaiming her place at her husbandâs side. She took Samantha in her arms and snuggled her close. A warmth he never thought heâd experience filled Tobiasâs chest as he wrapped them both in his arms. They sat in silence and let the moment linger, each sharing the same thought. This was pretty much perfection.
âI was only joking,â Casey finally spoke. âMarrying my doctor was probably the best thing I ever did.â
âProbably!â He sneered. âI know marrying you was the best thing I ever did, and if I forget, I always have my mother to remind me. But you go ahead and think about it.â
Casey silenced him with another tender kiss while Samantha began falling asleep in her arms.Â
âWe should get her inside. I donât think weâll be getting more trick-or-treaters today.â
âYeah,â he agreed, âand Sammy is tuckered out. Besides, I want to pull those med school rankings up to prove you wrong.â
âAre you kidding me?â Casey laughed.
âSecond in my class!â He said, picking the empty candy bowl up from the steps. âFrom the best med school in America. Where were you, dear? Sixth? Seventh?â
âFIFTH! And you know it! Thatâs from an Ivy League med school. Is Hopkins an Ivy?â she placed her pointer on her chin in mock confusion. âHmm. No, itâs not.â
âIvy Schmivy!â He said, opening the door, âdid I tell you I was the most published student in Hopkins history?â
âOnly seven dozen times⌠by our second date. But, Tobias?â
âYes? Samantha is going to be out for the count any minute now. Is this really how you want to spend the first alone time weâve had all day?â
âHeh,â he snickered. âScrew Hopkins. It was overrated. Now, the important questions. Do you have that other little Halloween costume we picked out?â
âYes,â she smirked. âOperative word being little.â
âThatâs the one! Why donât you go put that on, and weâll see what I turn into at midnight?â
âSweetheart,â Casey teased. âSamantha can hear youâŚ.â
âItâs OK. She doesnât understand us yet.â
âWhat are we going to do when she does?â Â
âGot me,â he shrugged. âBut my Mom already has a trust fund set up specifically for therapy bills. She said with us as parents, Sammyâs bound to need it.â
âNo arguments here,â she laughed.
âGoodâŚâ he winked, ânow go get changed. Iâll put Sammy to bed, then weâre about to have an extra Happy Halloween!â
(Okay I'm telling myself I'm going to get caught up today. Wish me luck, and I wish you happiness despite the angst you're about to read.)
Standing in front of him is what someone might think was a monument of obsidian, a shard of the earth itself towering above the small half-elf. Heâs in black as well, but his colour seems barely grey in comparison to the being of void in front of him. Vax stares up the steep angle, his hair rippling in the faint breeze as he greets the Raven Queen, her porcelain mask empty as she looks back down at him.Â
âYes, Champion?â
That voice- familiar to Vax now- echoes in his mind, hardly a whisper and yet seeming as though it ought to shake the very earth around him. He takes a deep breath, gathering courage, then speaks.
âI had a question. I stand as your champion, and you have told me that I may stay until we defeat Vecna. I simply wondered if there was a way âany wayâ that I could extend that time? To spend but a few more years with these people.â
Though the expression of the face doesnât change, Vax can sense a shift in her emotion as she shrinks down a fraction to speak more easily with him. Though she still stands metres above him, her form becomes less of a terrifying monument and instead seems, if she could ever be described as such, almost approachable.Â
âFate-Touched. You know that you have been chosen.â
âI know, I simply-â, and he pauses, looking back at the party and at you, wrapped warmly in your blankets and sleeping comfortably next to Vex. He turns back towards the Matron, then continues. âI simply wondered if there might not be a way to get just a little more time with Vex and- with those I love.â Though he catches himself before he says your name, he and the goddess standing in front of him both know to whom he refers.Â
âThere may be one wayââ
Before she can even finish, Vax sucks in a breath and takes a step forward, but she holds out a hand to stall him.Â
â--but I do not think it will be to your liking, Champion. The only way to escape your promise is to trade fates- to trade places with one who already shares your heart.â
It takes a moment, but a flash of panic flickers across his face as he understands, then takes a step back to return to his original stance. His face falls, his eyes staring at the ground unseeing.Â
âNo. Anything but that. I canât lose my sister or my love, and I couldnât subject them to this fate. This was my own choice, and thus my own consequences.â
âI thought as much. I am sorry, Vaxâildan, that the terms are so unbending.âÂ
He nods slowly, finally looking back up at her.Â
âThank you for coming to speak with me, my Lady. I will likely see you soon.â
âBe safe, Champion. The worlds rest on your- and your friendsâ- shoulders.â
With this, she once again grows, immense and terrifying, until it seems as though she blocks out the sky, then fades into the stars themselves.Â
Vax watches as she departs, then turns back towards the camp. Slowly walking back to where you all rest, he sits for a moment before waking Percy for his watch and laying down next to you, his warm arm resting on your side. As you unconsciously lean onto him, a single tear falls for an instant before he roughly brushes it away and closes his eyes.Â

Trust No One.
You don't realise you're in shock until you get home. Adrenaline leaving your body, you are left shaking- body cold, skin clammy. You become aware of blood on your clothes and on your hands. Mulder's blood. Deep Throat's blood. The sudden urge to rip them from your body overcomes you, the urge to burn them, to never see them again.
A hand touches your shoulder and you flinch, jumping backwards, hand at your hip, fingers wrapping around your gun ready to pull. You see the man's face, so clear in the streetlight, clear enough to identify. It was no mistake, he looked directly at you. The thought terrifies you.
It is Mulder's hand that touches your shoulder. Mulder- bloodied and beaten, eyes so puffy they will barely stay open. He holds you to steady himself.
"Mulder, you're hurt," you say. In the choas you only just realise how bad he looks.
"I'm fine, you..." His eyes scan over you, checking you for injuries of your own. Somehow you're fine. Somehow you got out unsceathed while your partner got battered and a man died. Why did they spare you?
You think of conspiracies. Of covert operations. Little notes and long reports. Spying. Two men in an office, the task of debunking. And finally, that man's face, driving past you, clear in the streetlight, clear enough to identify. Did they think you were on their side?
"I'm okay," you answer. "I'm not hurt." Because of course you're not. You're one of them.
"You need to sit down."
Mulder nods and you guide him to your kitchen table, placing him down in your chair. You busy yourself tending to Mulder, cleaning his wounds and patching him up. You don't talk while it all happens, instead you think. Think about the implications of seeing that man's face. You think of Mulder, so trusting. Trust no one rings in your ears- Deep Throat's final words. But you trust Mulder. You trusted Deep Throat despite your previous reservations. You trusted the government and you were wrong to. But more importantly, they trust you; to carry out their mission, be their double agent. But they hurt Mulder, they killed Deep Throat, injustice in your eyes and that's why you joined the FBI, right, to fight injustice.
You finish with Mulder, who is half falling asleep in the chair. What does he make of all this? He's probably angry- or will be. And what will he make of you? He never trusted you, knew instantly what your purpose was, thought you were spying when all you wanted to do was solve but now you know it's bigger than that, bigger what your wants and needs in life. For whatever reason you're entangled in this, whatever this is, now.
You help Mulder onto the couch, grab and blanket and pillow. His eyes close, breath evening out almost instantly. You sit on the floor beside him, watching over him, keeping a vigil until you're sure he's asleep.
As you strip the bloodied clothes from your body you decide you won't their be little pawn anymore, you'll be a catalyst, hopping from side to side whenever you see fit. You'll learn all their secrets, report to Mulder. You'll protect him too, keep him on track, on the right side of the law. That way they can't hurt him, he can't blow himself up.

They meet in the girlsâ bathroom on the first day of eleventh grade.
Itâs lunch, which she would ordinarily spend with Lane, at the table they claimed in the cafeteria way back at the beginning of freshman year, but Laneâs not back from Korea yet, not for another few days, and Rory doesnât know how to navigate Stars Hollow High on her own. Thatâs the point of having a best friend, isnât it, so that thereâs always someone by your side in the trenches of high school? Isnât that why sheâd decided not to go to any of those fancy private schools she had looked at with Lorelai last year? So she wouldnât have to leave Lane behind? And now look at her, the lonely nerd spending lunch in an empty girlsâ bathroom on the first day of school.
