Would he have been more open? Maybe more intimate? Because that's clearly his overall vibe. He'd definitely be very forward and making moves here n there if there was no back story to cover up for the hesitation. Would he still be this respectful? Or maybe.. a little.. naughty? I think at his core, he's a very gentle and calm person and will always be, but if he'd never subjected her to what he has and if she was "normal", he'd definitely be more touchy and open with his affection, assuming she'd be open to that!! Since he also is very respectful, he'll only joke around with someone if he's 100% certain they'll not draw any sort of unwanted conclusion from his words. Like the joke he pulled when she asked to sleep with him after the date, he knows SHE (now) knows how much he likes it when she sleeps in his bed with him AND that he definitely does NOT consider a woman a slut for sleeping with someone on the first date. So while i wouldn't call his humor "dark" in any way, he's just very... insistent no one (especially her) is uncomfortable by his words or actions. But yes, he, himself is rather confident, and if he hesitates or restricts something, it's definitely more likely he hesitates for someone else's sake rather than him being scared of rejection or smth. But he's still very aware of what women go through with men in general so he's definitely extra respectful toward them so that they never feel uncomfortable around him!
