Vergil and Dante jerked as something pulsed through them. Dante spun around, heart pounding so hard it felt like it was trying to crack his ribs. Quintennus’s head was… stuck. Stuck like an overripe fruit thrown against a wall. But it wasn’t stuck against the building. It almost was. Almost, but not… quite. Kind of like how that building was… not… quite...

“V-Verg?” he stammered. Beating his wings suddenly felt like a chore, like the air had turned to soup, all the aches and pains he’d momentarily forgotten coming back to bite. “I can’t… I can’t f-f-feel that-that sp-spot.”

The dark gray skin that made up Vergil’s face in his Triggered form had turned several shades lighter. He didn’t reply, just twitched a nod. His hand on the Yamato was shaking, the katana’s song sounding shrill as he drew her. With a jerk, he made a horizontal slash, the blue-tinted arc of distortion that was his and the Yamato’s power surging forward like a wave. The wave struck the building which rippled, like Yamato’s strike had been a pebble dropped into a pond, then stilled again.

“That’s… That’s re-really bad,” Dante whispered. What an understatement, but… what else was he supposed to say? There was nothing else, no curse or expletive strong enough to explain how screwed they were. The Yamato broke spells. It was one of the first things Vergil had told him, bragging about the power, how strong and unusual it was. They’d used it to destroy all the untethered portals and summoning circles that had been used to bring the demon army here, and again to break the shield hiding their aerial forces. It had never failed… until now. ...

Dante summoned the Rebellion to his hand and drew on the strength in the sword. The Rebellion didn’t disrupt and dispel magic, but it could deflect and even absorb it. Every time he tanked an attack, a little bit of that attack’s power was fed into his sword, kind of like Royal Guard, except the stored energy was used to bolster him instead of to attack. Reaching out, he grabbed Vergil’s hand (a difficult feat with both their wings in motion), and fed that saved-up strength to Vergil instead. “Try again.”

Again, Vergil just nodded and took in a deep breath, then slashed. This time, the wave was brighter, harder, sharper, and it sliced into whatever spell concealed the truth.
